Re: xman

1996-10-01 Thread Susan G. Kleinmann
Hi Kenneth --

You asked:
> How could that be if xman dose not exist in debian ??

It couldn't be. If you execute

zgrep xman Contents.gz | grep bin

you'd see that xman is part of the xcontrib package. The Contents.gz files
are in the top of unstable, stable, non-free, and contrib.

But it really is true that tkman is a _lot_ more useful. For one thing,
tkman offers a search capability; xman offers only scrolling and visual
grep.

Good luck,
Susan Kleinmann

sanyo cdrom (crd-256P)

A new debian installer has asked me to inquire whether anyone has experience
with the subject cdrom unit - his installation won't recognize it. At this

- what debian version is being used
But in the meantime I thought I'd see if this cdrom unit was familiar to

Looks very similar to one of the problems I had. The CDROM driver is a
module, which was not being installed because "install" failed to run
"depmod -a". Do "depmod -a", and reboot.

"insmod driver" is pretty useless advice, isn't it? "insmod" is the
command to insert a module. They are trying to say "insmod ",
where stands for the module containing the driver for your
CDROM drive.

NFS user/group aliasing

1996-10-01 Thread Gordon Russell
Does anyone have a NFS filesystem for linux which allows the system
manager to specify an alias file, such that UIDs and GIDs are converted
from the NFS server numbering scheme to one provided by the client?

I import NFS mounts from my local server, but they use GID numbers which
conflict with those found in the standard debian /etc/groups file. I would
rather not change the groups file in debian to match solaris... (ok, so I am
a solaris hater).

I am sure my problem is not uncommon, so before I consider reinventing
the wheel I thought I would check to see if anyone has solved this
already. I expect ugidd is the normal way to do this, but I would not be
able to get my NFS server system manager to run this daemon (security you know).

I half thought I could hack up the standard NFS client in the kernel to allow
an alias file for GID conversions to be specified during the mount command,
but this probably would not be a particularly clean solution.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I take it that you've tried to "insmod iso9660" and then try to mount the

Linux SMP

1996-10-01 Thread Ricardo Kleemann
Hi guys...

I'm wondering if attempting to use Linux-SMP is any good. Afterall, for
real efficiency, don't the programs/daemons/utilities have to be designed
in such a way that they'll make use of SMP capabilities?

For example, if I have sendmail, pop3d, httpd daemons running, on a dual
processor system with SMP kernel, as compared to a single-processor
system, would I gain much advantage?

Let's say, for example, a dual-133 and a single-PPro200. My feeling is
that for raw speed and efficiency, the PPro200 would easily win out...

Now, due to the fact that most ISP usage is dependent on bandwidth
limitations (meaning that a lot of the time the raw processor power won't
do much good) what is your opinion on choosing a more effective system?
Between say dual-133 or single-Pro200?

I definitely feel that on "internal" processing, like compiling, using
msql, etc, the Pro200 would by far be the better choice.

Ricardo

scd0 not recog. as block dev. (what is "insmod driver")

1996-10-01 Thread Toshinao Ishii
Dear Debian users,

I am installing Debian 1.1.4. (So I am new to Debian.)
I have a problem. Mouting cdrom (/dev/scd0) fails in `dselect`.

In the reboot message after installation of BASE system, system
says

...
ncr53c8xx : at PCI bus 0, device 12, function 0
...
scsi0 : ncr53c8xx (rel 1.12a)
scsi : 1 host.
  Vendor QUANTUM Model :TRB850S
  Type: ...
Detected scsi disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
  Vendor TOSHIBA Model:
  Type: CD-ROM ...
scsi : detected 1 SCSI disk total.
...

It looks scsi driver is running without problem. Root partition in
SCSI disk is mounted and accessible without problem. However, if I
try to mount the cdrom

# mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/scd0 as a block device
  (maybe `insmod driver`?)
#

The kernel is the one in buzz-updates/disk-i386/special-kernels and called
"boot1440_2.0.5-1.bin" Is this kernel not suitable ? What is this insmod
driver ? Please help me to mount SCSI CDROM.

Thanks in advance.

A simple on/off is inadequate. I put a prototype I wrote recently

AFAIK ircII is looking for /usr/lib/irc/ircII.servers" if there is no

It's kept in linux/.config . I believe that make config actually
looks at your current kernel to figure out a default if you don't already
have a .config.. I say this because every time I compile a fresh kernel
it already has 'Y' on the correct network card. Also, you should be able
just modify the line or two in that file to turn on ip aliasing, given a
working kernel source (ie. one that finds your network card.)

Just my $.02

Suddenly: "Can't locate module net-pf-4" revisited.

1996-10-01 Thread Alan Eugene Davis

This is an update to my earlier post.
When I tried to install a newer version of the modules packages,
from modules_2.0.0-11.deb, I was asked whether I wanted to
install the package maintainer's version of the file
/etc/conf.modules, I checked it out. There is a line in these files
about net-pf-4. I therefore installed the package maintainer's new
configuration file. But the message persists.

I will try again after rebooting (obviously).

1996-10-01 Thread Susan G. Kleinmann
Hi --

You said:
>make-kpkg -r kernel-image-2.0.21-Custom.1.i386.deb kernel_image

The -r flag takes the revision number as an argument, not the entire
package name.  Try
 make-kpkg -r Custom.1
or
 make-kpkg -r Custom-1 if the '.' is causing problems.

BTW, make-kpkg expects that it will be invoked from a clean top level
source directory. So if you've previously compiled in /usr/src/linux,
then (I think) you need to execute
 make-kpkg clean
before proceeding.

Good luck,

In spite of not knowing anything about the bad links problem, I'll try answer.

It seems to me as if the symbolic links points a little wrong.
Do "ls -l /cdrom/buzz-updates/binary-i386/*/sudo*" and see if you get any
output. Suppose you see
"/cdrom/buzz-updates/binary-i386/admin/sudo_1.4.4-2.deb", then do
"ln -sf /cdrom/buzz-updates/binary-i386/admin/sudo_1.4.4-2.deb \
/tmp/Debian-1.1.6/stable/binary-i386/admin/sudo_1.4.4-2.deb" and then
"rm /tmp/Debian-1.1.6/stable/binary-i386/admin/sudo_1.4.4-2.deb".

Repeat for the second symbolic link.

A file called '.config' is generated at the top of your kernel source
tree, which contains a list of all the selected compilation options from
make config, make xconfig or make menuconfig, in the form

   IP_ALIASING=yes
   BLAH_BLAH=module
   FOOBARWIZ=no

This file will still be there after you've compiled the kernel, so all
you need to do is copy it to a safe location and drop it back in when
you want to generate the same kernel.

make-kpkg kernel_image fails

1996-10-01 Thread schulte
Hello,

I tried to compile linux-2.0.21 (manually tar'ed to
/usr/src/kernel-source-2.0.21 with a symbolic link to /usr/src/linux).
So I invoked kernel-package-2.03 using the command

   make-kpkg -r kernel-image-2.0.21-Custom.1.i386.deb kernel_image

This broke, however, with the following messages:

  make[3]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.0.21/arch/i386/lib'
  make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.0.21'
  touch stamp-build
  make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.0.21'
  install -d -o root -g root -m 755 image-tmp/DEBIAN
  Error: Can't open display: -o
  make: *** [stamp-image] Error 1

This happened at the end of the compile. The kernel and the modules compiled
well, and I installed them the traditional way with no further problems.

I have to admit, that I configured a rather fat kernel with a lot of
modules. The same process (same linux-2.0.21, same Debian 1.1.8) for my old
office 386 DX33 (4 MB -- I use it just as a print server and as a "news
window" ;-) succeeded with no problems after 16 hours of compile time in a
"kernel-image-2.0.21-Custom.1.i386.deb", which installed fine with dpkg.
However, this was configured as a rather tiny kernel with only a few
modules.

Am I missing something? Or is there a bug with kernel-package-2.03?
As a Slackware "convertit", I am new to Debian (and like it ...), but I am
a rather experienced Linux user. Should I write a bug report?
I have no problems with this situation, since kernel 2.0.21 is up and
running now -- but not the standard Debian way. So any hint would be welcome.

Cheers KWS

Suddenly: "Can't locate module net-pf-4"

1996-10-01 Thread Alan Eugene Davis

This message has suddenly begun to appear whenever I run ifconfig.
This was never noticed before, but apparently this has been logged
into the daemon.log for awhile.

Oct 1 17:15:55 modprobe: Can't locate module net-pf-4

I haven't a clue as to what net-pf-4 is, or why ifconfig suddenly has
developed a need for it, or suddenly gotten verbose about it.
I have been installing and uninstalling some mail software, and
perhaps some net software, but I cannot get a fix on this.

Does this mean something to anyone?
A clue for the clueless?

Then Joey Hess replied:
>Sorry, I can't help you with your problem, but this does raise a question
>in my mind: what exactly is the benefit of using the kernel-package vs.
>rolling your own kernel?

The following might be useful input for both questions:

make-kpkg provides a kernel-image package that can be managed and manipulated
like other Debian packages. The accessibility of all the files involved
in upgrading a kernel to the Debian tools is an advantage, especially if
one is trying out many kernel configurations and/or versions.

Once I run
  make-kpkg kernel_image
it is very easy to make a new copy of the Debian boot disk, using the
boot-floppies package:
  cd /usr/src/bootfloppies-1.1.1
  ./bootdisk.sh kernel-image-2.0.whatever.deb /dev/fd0 1440

This makes a handy emergency boot disk (even though its initial primary
design was for installation.) One can't use the boot floppies script
without the kernel-image .deb file.

HTH,
Susan Kleinmann

SMP and /dev/cua_ and nfs module

1996-10-01 Thread Dr. Michael Grimm
Hi,

yesterday I joined the SMP-community running 2.0.21 on a TYAN Tomcat II
(yes, the working cache modules installed!) with two 133MHz Pentiums,
some SCSI devices, and no network, yet.

My Linux distribution is the lastest Debian 1.1.9.

After compiling 2.0.21 I booted the new kernel with the following results:
- Both CPUs were installed correctly
- The kernel booted as usual (SCSI detection, ...)
- BUT then I got a complete HANG after the message:
  "Configuring serial ports ..."
(This is the moment where all the /dev/cua.'s are setup. Without SMP
there are no problems at all.)

Therefore I removed the corresponding 0setserial script from /etc/rc.boot
(?, sorry, I'm not sure if this is the correct directory name ?). Then
I rebooted and everything worked fine. SMP is up and running smoothly!

Questions: - Is this a known conflict between SMP and 0setserial ?
   - What do I need this script for ?

2nd problem:
- compiling SMP _and_ nfs as a module leads to :
"*** Unresolved symbols in module /lib/modules/2.0.21/fs/nfs.o"
(Without SMP are all symbols resolved.)

Question: - Is this a known behaviour ?

Thanks in advance,
Michael

P.S. To the SMP cracks: 2.0.14 and 0setserial yielded a hang, as well ...
SMP profiling set _and_ unset, as well ...
SMP kernel with modules _and_ without, as well ...

You can use latex2rtf (std. debian package) conversion program, and

My scripts that made the archives then were lost in a disk crash; I've
recently recreated them, and the FTP archive (/debian/debian-lists)
are up to date.

As for the webserver, it has very recently moved to a new machine. Right
now, there is no /FTP/, no list archives etc. We're working on them.

Hopefully, sometime in the not too distant future, www.debian.org will
function properly (or even improved).

Whoops... the announcement was written when ftp.i-connect.net was more
up to date then ftp.debian.org. I've fixed the links in the master copy
which is mirrored to www.debian.org.

Getting config from kernel

1996-10-01 Thread Joe Emenaker

Okay, I sent this to the list once already, but I'm not sure it got
through.

I'm trying to get IP aliasing going on my brand spankin' new Debian 1.1
box. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to have been compiled in, nor
could I find a module for it in /lib/modules/current/ipv4.

I tried getting the linux-source package and doing "make modules", but,
when I tried to "insmod ip_alias.o", it told me that my 2.06 modules
don't match my linux 2.0.6 (even though I'm using the 2.0 version of
the modules package, which was supposed to fix that bug).

So, I've resigned myself to recompiling the kernel. However, I'm worried
that, during the Q&A of "make config", I'll accidentally say "no" to
a driver that I need. For example, with my network card, I'm not exactly
sure which driver is driving it, but I know that the card is working
with the stock 2.0.6 kernel that came with debian. Since I'm doing this
over the net, and since I'd like to avoid having to pay a visit to the
physical machine if at all possible, I'd like to make sure that all my
necessary drivers are compiled in.

The way I'd really like to do this is to be able to somehow extract or
ftp a copy of the config file used to make the stock debian kernel. Then,
I'd know that I was starting from something that I *know* works, and I
could then make incremental changes to that.

So, a few questions:

1 - Any ideas on how to get ip_alias.o to load?

2 - Where is the information generated by "make config" kept? For example,
suppose I forgot to compile in *one* crucial driver, and I don't want
to go through the grueling Q&A that "make config" puts me through.
Where can I make that one-line change and then go on to "make depend",
etc.?

3 - Is there any way I can extract or obtain a copy of what config was
used to generate the 2.0.6 kernel that I'm using?

- Joe

smail keeps reporting errors that connection to the BIND server has

Debian was configured for smail with no DNS

Please can someone give me some advice, no matter what I try it just

Sorry Gerry, I was misleading you. I just checked my config and
CONFIG_IP_FORWARDING is enabled.

In another mail:

># Forward packets from ds3-net, masquerading as deselby.xs4all.nl.

>ipfwadm -F -p deny

I can see how this will masquerade/forward all messages coming in on
network 192.168.1, going to any IP address via 192.168.1.1 (i.e. the
server). Before I set this up on a running network I would like to be able
to test IP masquerading/forwarding on the server in isolation first.

As far as I can see diald should set up a static SLIP interface with a
given IP address and, upon demand, dial out to an ISP, connect using PPP
and generate a PPP interface, as follows

SLIP: interface IP: 192.168.2.1

PPP: interface IP: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the dynamic ISP assigned IP address. If I turn
reroute off in diald, some software must forward packets from the SLIP
interface (which receives the original request) to the PPP interface which
is connected to the real world. I was hoping to be able to use ipfw to do
this.

1) Watching the changes that occur even with reroute turned off both the
SLIP and PPP interfaces are modified when diald connects

2) In the following configuration:IP:

 --
 | server |
 | 192.168.1.1|
 ||
-- PPP|
 | ^ |
 | V | net: 192.168.1.0
 | SLIP <--> Ethernet ---
 --

should the ==192.168.1.1

3) Is there any way of testing forwarding/masquerading withount "going
live"?

Thanks already to Gerry and Giuseppe. Are there any more suggestions?

Questions on packages.(nis,shadow..)..only a couple ;)

1996-10-01 Thread Eloy F. Macha

Hello,

A couple questions on NIS and shadow passwd support... has anyone
succesfully compiled the yppasswdd w/ shadow support?? I got the
experimental shadow package (along with source..) and it works fine,
 like a charm...

On the yppasswdd man page, shadow support is mentioned, but the package
needs to be recompiled to support shadow... (why doesn't it have built in
support as packaged?? granted it is a feature, but other packages
wu-ftpd, xlockmore, etc, have built in support.. anyway)

so i go ahead and just recompile the yppasswdd program. When compiling the
update.c file, it complains that it cannot find any reference to spw_*
functions (* = lock,unlock,etc..). Anyhow, has anyone succesfully
recompiled yppasswdd to support shadow?? if so, any hints/suggestions
appreciated...

Another question... what is the 'standard' for this issue going to be?? In
other words, is shadow the Linux thing (or Debian, for that matter), or
are we looking to other alternatives??

 Thanks for your time guys,

Any way to extract current kernel config?

1996-10-01 Thread Joe Emenaker

I'm trying to get IP aliasing going on my brand-spankin' new Debian 1.1 box.
It doesn't appear to be compiled in, and I couldn't find it in
/lib/modules/current/ipv4.

So, my last recourse is to compile a new kernel. However, the thing I'm
afraid of is not compiling in some feature that is in the stock
debian 1.1 kernel. An example would be my network card. I'm not sure
what driver my network card is being driven by; I just know that it's
working right now, and I'd hate to accidentally not compile its driver
into the kernel (especially since I'm doing this all over the net, and,
if the networking stops working, I'll have to actually pay a visit to the
physical machine).

So, I have a few questions:

1 - To save me the trouble, does anyone have an ip_alias.o that works with
the 2.0.6 kernel? You can send it to me via MIME, if you please.

2 - When I run "make config" on the kernel source, where is that info
put? Say, for example, that I forgot to enable *one* driver that I
needed, and I didn't want to go back through that torturous Q&A of
"make config" again. Where's the file I can go to to change that
single "N" to a "Y" and run "make depend" again.

3 - Suppose I wanted to make my new kernel as identical to the stock one;
basically as a good place to start from while I turn on IP aliasing.
Is there a way to extract (or a place to get) the the config file that
was used to make the kernel I've got? Is there any chance that the
default settings for the debian kernel-source package are set to
the same settings as what generated the current kernel?

Thanks in advance.

- Joe

Uhm, yes, I guess you could also do the make modules as chroot, also.
