It seems to be an error of the whole X system, which cannot start because
it fails to initilize mouse and keyboard modules.

I'm not sure how to bypass this, maybe you are hitting a sort of bug
here :-?

Consider trying out the nvidia-glx driver. Install it using
module-assistant:

update-pciids
apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-source
m-a prepare
m-a clean nvidia
m-a a-i nvidia
apt-get install nvidia-glx
depmod -a
modprobe nvidia

This is only necessary if you start to use nvidia for the first time:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

(I don't know if all these steps will be necessary for you, the
update-pciids step in particular may be redundant, but it doesn't hurt
anything. I took this from

http://www.xs4all.nl/~carlo17/howto/nvidia.html )

Let us know if it works. Or not.

On a newly installed amd64 Testing system, it was quite simple to get
scim working in KDE.

STEP 1:
I installed the following packages: scim, scim-tables,
scim-tables-additional (other tables may need to be intalled depending
on what layout one requires), followed by the corresponding ttf fonts.

If I started scim now (using "scim -d" command), I could get the gray
keyboard icon on the KDE panel but no choice of input by left clicking
on it.

STEP 2:
Next, based on
http://lorenzod8n.wordpress.com/2008/01/17/setting-up-scim-on-debian/, I
put these lines in my ~/.bashrc:
#for scim
export XMODIFIERS='@im=SCIM'
export GTK_IM_MODULE="scim"
export QT_IM_MODULE="scim"

Then I killed all the currently running scim process (list them by "ps
aux | grep scim" and kill them all).

Then I sourced the .bashrc file (to set the variables; you could also
just relogin) from a terminal and restarted scim (from the same
terminal) using:
$> scim -d

After a few seconds the gray keyboard icon appeared on my KDE panel and
I was able to get a list of input methods by left-clicking on it.

The surprising thing was that installing skim froze my logging in to
KDE. After entering my password on the log in screen, the desktop never
appeared, the login process appears to hang. I remove skim after that
and was able to log in to KDE in the normal manner.

In short, installing and running scim on Debian is just a matter
installed scim, the relevant tables, the relevant fonts, and setting the
three variables in ~/.bashrc and restarting scim in daemon mode.

Anything, and I repeat anything, is recoverable, even if you remove the
filesystem you can recover pieces of the file. You can remove remnants
of the file using over write methods but you need to make sure they
properly implement the algorithm and do your own research on the
algorithms to make sure they were designed or were updated for modern
hard drives. EXP: Gutmann method was designed for older HD's and will
not work on newer HD's most of the time (depending on who implements
it). Now, removing remnants of the file doesn't make it unrecoverable
(in all circumstances), you might be able to still do a very low level
recovery, something they would generally reserve for say, a RICO
investigation, terrorists an those sorts. The only way to stop any and
all data leaks, recoveries or anything of the sort is to either Degauss,
Destroy or use Encryption on the drive from the get go and to be honest,
the only proper implementation of drive encryption (beyond the actual
encryption) would be RedHat (and this is only because they offer the
ability to span encryption across multiple drives and recommend it) and
no drive encryption (beyond truecrypt) offers deniability. Something
I've brought up on both Debian and Ubuntu and even to Redhat. As a
matter of fact, Ubuntu developers fought with me over the idea telling
me that only criminals could possibly want plausible deniability, but
Ubuntu is rather closed minded most of the time when it comes to this
sort of thing.

I used a script like this (I just rewrote it from the top of my head, so
this one is untested):

EXT="mp4"
DEST="/home/michael/music"

for F in *.${EXT}; do
N=${F/$EXT/wav}
mplayer -vc dummy -vo null -ao pcm -aofile "${DEST}/${N}" "$F"
normalize "${DEST}/${N}"
lame --verbose -q 2 --abr 192 "${DEST}/${N}" "${DEST}/${F/$EXT/mp3}"
done

The catch with this over-engineered and occasionally inefficient script was
that I would use it for both random audio formats and video files to extract
the audio track (think presentation-to-podcast-like conversion).

I am skeptical whether there is any good reason for tools like wipe2fs,
zerofree and friends (if there are any...), when a dd && sync && rm have the

My older video camera has a "digital" output, which accepts a firewire
jack. If you don't have this, then the next best thing is to use the
composite output that you mentioned. For that you'll need some kind of
capture device. Off the top of my head, I'd recommend a Hauppauge
PVR-150. It's an older capture card, 720x480 max, and you can probably
get them cheap on ebay or elsewhere. That card is supported in Debian
Lenny. It captures and encodes the video in MPEG-2 format.

If the filesystem is NTFS, then it's rather trivial to recover
overwritten data, due to the journal. While you're probably safe in
assuming that the next user won't bother doing anything like that, the
only way to truly, and securely remove the previous data, is to wipe out
the filesystem too, which means taking out the OS.

Yeah, since my last report of Ekiga working, there has been no problems.
It appears to be stable and had survived reboots and changing of audio
devices gracefully.

So it appears that it was just a question of something having gone wrong
during my testing with USB headset, and the primary cause appears to be
the wrong settings of my clock. Since I fixed the system clock, there
have been no problems in audio at all (no clicks in the speakers, no
errors from pulseaudio in syslog, Ekiga working).

At present if my board's audio is being used by another application
(playing a video, e.g.), Ekiga cannot use it and displays the warning.
But Ekiga works if it uses a different device, so while playing a video
on my system (system's audio being used), Ekiga works properly with my
USB headset. I think this "problem" will be solved if Ekiga is made to
use pulseaudio ... still looking into this.

It would probably help if you said what the actual model is. Mine is a

Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 and 9.10.

My first approach to hardware issues is generally to find an operating

recent Ubuntu Live or Knoppix is usually worth a try. There has been a
lot of recent work in the 3G modem area now that they are fairly affordable.

I did get this model working on a previous OS, either sid or an earlier
Ubuntu, I'm not sure which, but before usb_modeswitch was easily
available. I found it along with a lot of useful 3G modem information on

I've got the same issue. I was thinking of this, but I've never tried
it:

deb http://my.proxy/ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ lenny main

and get rid of your 02proxy file.

I think this might use the first deb line (which points to your proxy),
and fall back to the 2nd deb line if the first is unavailable. Or maybe
some pinning needs to happen. Anyway, it's an idea I've been thinking
of testing out.

Anyway, there's a package called pulseaudio-esound-compat that you might
want to install. It allows an with no native pulseaudio support to

help needed in installing 3G+ usb modem

2010-07-15 Thread Bernard

Hi to Everyone,

I have already tried a lot of things to get this to work on my laptop
running Ubuntu 8.04. I also carried tests on my desktop on Debian Lenny,
with no results in either system.

Some people got very similar models of 3G key to work on Ubuntu. They
have recommended that I carry a few tests, but none gave satisfactory
results, and they don't know what more to advise. I thought that, maybe
someone here would have a better experience.

Whenever I plug that modem in a usb slot, it first acts as if it was a
mass storage device. Nothing wrong with this, have I been told : the
data space contains programs for MSWIN install. The device must
therefore be switched so as to be reckognized as a modem, which may be
done using various means. You need "usb-modeswitch" and "comgt"
packages. None of them were on my system, nor were they available in the
'Hardy' repositories, so I went fetching them as .deb packages meant for
a more recent distro. They seemed to have installed flawlessly. However,
I can't get any result.

At first, I don't know how to launch usb_modeswitch. It may be that it
is supposed to work automatically. In any case, my usbmodem does not
switch from storage to modem. The man page is really poor, as it does
not explain what you must exactly write in your statement :

SYNOPSIS
   usb-modeswitch [-hvpVPmMrdHn] [-c filename]

with no mention of what target you must write after this.

sudo usb_modeswitch

Error : could not find file /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf

I wrote one with two lines from an example taken from another version of
usb_modeswitch, which version I could not install (this is a tarball
which compiles here with errors). Then

sudo usb_modeswitch -c /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf

No default vendor/product ID given. Aborting

Nowhere was it written that you had to specify a default vendor/product.
I tried a few things as vendor/product, including what you find in the
usb_modeswitch-data files for your modem, that is 19d2:2000 then
0x19d2/0x2000 and various other names... to no avail.

I tried :

sudo comgt -d /dev/ttyUSB0

comgt 20:44:46 -> -- Error Report --
comgt 20:44:46 -> Error @6 line 1, Can't control /dev/ttyUSB0, please
try again

I can try any time I want, same result. It more often happens that,
instead of the above message, I only get : "Can' open /dev/ttyUSB0. I
also get this if I test USB1, USB2...

I have also tried the 'vodaphone' package which failed too.

My USB modem is a ZTE (Huwei abcd).

lsusb says :

   Bus 007 Device 007: ID 19d2:2000

dmesg says :

usb 7-2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
usb 7-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
scsi12 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
   usb-storage: device found at 7
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning

(but if I wait, nothing changes)

That usb modem DOES WORK under MSWIN (I tried it)

I have got another one, of the same vendor, but from another mobile
provider. For this other one, I still don't have the SIM card, still I
tried it to see what would happen ; I even tried it with the alien SIM
card in it. It does not work either, even though both models are known
to work under Linux, as reported by several people on various lists.
This one gives very similar messages with dmesg, same reply with comgt
-d /dev/ttyUSB0, and lsusb says : ID 12d1:1446 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd.

Thanks in advance for your comments

Looks like it's missing a "not", but that document is obsolete anyway.

Have a look at /etc/network/interfaces and 'man interfaces'.

I'm not exactly sure you understand the meaning of 'closed' in the
context of firewalls, but you might want to have a look at some firewall

You could also try recovering files with some common tools (PhotoRec

What recommendations would you have for an app to convert *.mp4 to

Thanks for any suggestions.

Just wanted to report how it is going with my machine with these steps
as well. I gave the above two commands and rebooted. BIOS clock showed
UTC. Booting into Windows 7 (which is set to take BIOS time as UTC time
by the registry change I mentioned in an earlier post) and in Fedora 7
shows the right time. Rebooted, confirm BIOS was still on UTC and logged
in to Debian. The time was still correctly displayed as EDT.
$ grep -i utc /etc/default/rcS
UTC=yes
~/tmp$ date
Thu Jul 15 14:40:18 EDT 2010
~/tmp$ date --utc
Thu Jul 15 18:40:22 UTC 2010

So, er, I am still not sure how to understand this:

install your system to use local time, just change the variable to yes

Re: Getting my init-script to run at the correct time

2010-07-15 Thread Arthur Machlas
Forgot to include this info:
Squeeze is parallel by default as well now. I know this because I'm
running it. :) It also has insserv installed by default, which handles
the ordering of scripts, so manually changing the number will work for
a short time, if at all, and be overwritten by any updates to insserv,
or basically anytime insserv is called, for example when insalled or
removing scripts from /etc/init.d

To get it to run at the correct time you need to include some lsb
headers in the inti script, then create a new level in insserv.conf.

And there is a typo in my original post, insserv.con should be conf.

This makes sense to me. As you said dd'ing the partition will blank
everything including Windows. Alternatively, if you know of a directory you
want everything inside shredded with zeros, you can use:

# find -type f -execdir shred -vfzu -n 0 '{}' \;
# rm -rf *

I am looking at its man page, which starts with

"sfill is designed to delete data which lies on available
diskspace on mediums in a secure manner which can not be recovered by
thiefs, law enforcement or other threats. The wipe algorythm is based
on the paper "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State
Memory" presented at the 6th Usenix Security Symposium by Peter Gutmann,
one of the leading civilian cryptographers."

Talk about overkill!

Sfill has some options which will make it easier and faster (by not
doing it in the most robust and time expensive fashion) to delete/free
disk space. I just have to verify how it work and I don't inadvertently
delete files which I am not supposed to.

Thanks.

Yes, but that would wipe out everything, the OS as well.

I was looking for just making the already deleted files unrecoverable by
a casual user. In other words, since a deleted file frees the space on
disk, by filling up the disk with all zeros and then deleting that zeros
file would be overwriting the earlier deleted files with zero. Am I
correct in this?

I suggest dd'ing /dev/zero over the raw disk partition instead. That
will zero out every single block of the file system. You can probably
just do

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/scd bs=1M

or some moral equivalent.

GRUB is complicated by definition. I mean, being a bootloader plenty of
options, is not easy to understand how to deal with it. I'm using GRUB
legacy for more that 6 years and still have to recheck the manual now and
then when something goes wrong in order to refresh my brain :-)

> Why don't you tell me what those things are , enquiring minds want to
> know ?!

I only know the inners of the GRUB legacy. On those days, one had only to
care about:

- GRUB installation location (MBR / first boot sector of a partition)
- /boot/grub/device.map file (for a correct mapping devices between BIOS
and GRUB)
- /boot/grub/menu.lst (GRUB menu file for booting different OSs)
- Check that GRUB installation files ("stage1" and "stage2) were not
damaged/corrupted somehow
- /etc/grub.conf (global configuration file)

(location of these files can vary depending on the linux distribution in
use)

And that was all.

Now, with GRUB2, some things remain the same, but some don't. For
example, IIRC, GRUB2 nomenclature for devices now starts counting by "1"
and not by "0", so the second partition of the first device is now
designated as (hd1,2) and not (hd0,1).

Greetings,

simple way to securely destroy deleted files in a file system

2010-07-15 Thread H.S.

I have a couple of hard disks in a computer which is to be recycled. I
want the windows OS in it to remain functional, but I want to be sure
that I have deleted all my personal files securely (never used the OS
that much anyway and there is hardly any important info in its registry
or browser). There are a number of documents that were deleted in
Windows the usual way (Shift+del) and I just want to make them
unrecoverable.

Its first and second partitions (sdc1 and sdc2) are vfat. I was thinking
of mounting these on /mnt/scd1 (and scd2) and then doing:
# dd if=/dev/zero > /mnt/sdc1/zeros.bin; rm -f /mnt/sdc1/zeros.bin

and the same for scd2. The idea is fill the partition with new data thus
overwriting any deleted files' data that is lying around. Would that be
adequate? The objective is just to prevent a casual recovery, reading
and copying of the data by a future user, so I don't need multiple
over-writes.

Adobe reader update

2010-07-15 Thread Frank
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I have Adobe reader 9.3.3 (the latest) installed on my Squeeze system,
but every day aptitude update/full-upgrade insists 9.3.1 is installed
and wants to remove it. Aptitude is trying to upgrade/update
acroread-debian-files.

This is what happens

 aptitude full-upgrade
The following packages will be upgraded:
  acroread-debian-files{b}
1 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not
upgraded. Need to get 18.4kB of archives. After unpacking 36.9kB will
be freed. The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  acroread-debian-files: Depends: acroread (>= 9.3.3) but 9.3.1-0.0
is installed. The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

 Remove the following packages:
1) acroread
2) acroread-data
3) acroread-debian-files
4) acroread-dictionary-en
5) acroread-escript
6) acroread-l10n-en
7) mozilla-acroread

Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] n
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

Keep the following packages at their current version:
1) acroread-debian-files [0.2.5 (now)]

I have removed and reinstalled Adobe reader several times
but it never changes

I am also wondering where the reader should be installed to
work properly in a Debian system. Right now it's in /opt.

Any suggestions? - I didn't find any similar problems in the Adobe
site knowledge base or forums.

Yes, I do (the exact name is "GTK Styles and Fonts" on my system; I
assume that is what you mean). I select the "Use another style" option
in the "GTK Styles" panel and choose "Clearlooks" from the drop-down

A rescue disk sounds useful :-) Is it better to have supergrubdisk or

Naturally the first thing you should suspect is flash.

The other thing that _might_ help, is to run strace on iceweasel and
see if that reveals why it's hanging.

pam_ssh for regular users only

Hello List,

I installed with success pam_ssh on my Squeeze box.
Nevertheless, I do not like the idea that an ssh-agent is launched when
the super user log in: is there a simple way to allow pam_ssh to launch
ssh-agent only for regular users (and disable it for the root).

Thanks in advance,

First, you can stop using nmap to do what you can do with

netstat -A inet -a

There is, after all, no need to port scan your own computer when you
can just ask it what it is doing. The ports might only be open for a
moment, but nmap has no special ability to catch such things.

Second, named is doubtless opening ports here and there to send out
and get replies to recursive queries. You could, of course, stop
having DNS service if this bothers you, though I wouldn't recommend
it. Other apps on your machine may also be opening UDP ports here and
there -- just lsof repeatedly to catch them.

setting XKBLAYOUT to gb in squeeze ?

2010-07-15 Thread Mathieu Malaterre
Hi there,

I am wondering if anyone has been able to setup XKBLAYOUT properly
on debian/squeeze. I am reading

http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/InputHotplugGuide

  It says:

$ grep -C 3 -i xkb /etc/default/console-setup
-> return nothing on my computer.

Reading the file it seems I actually need to change
/etc/default/keyboard instead, so I did:

$ grep -C 3 -i xkb /etc/default/keyboard
# /etc/init.d/hal restart

# The following variables describe your keyboard and can have the same
# values as the XkbModel, XkbLayout, XkbVariant and XkbOptions options
# in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="gb"
XKBVARIANT=""
XKBOPTIONS="terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"

# If you don't want to use the XKB layout on the console, you can
# specify an alternative keymap. Make sure it will be accessible
# before /usr is mounted.
# KMAP=/etc/console-setup/defkeymap.kmap.gz

As specified, I did rerun the hal deamon:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/hal restart
Restarting Hardware abstraction layer: hald.

$ lshal | grep xkb
-> return nothing

If I look at the log file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I can see something weird:

...
(II) XINPUT: Adding extended input device "Dell Dell USB Keyboard"
(type: KEYBOARD)
(**) Option "xkb_rules" "evdev"
(**) Option "xkb_model" "pc104"
(**) Option "xkb_layout" "us"
...

I also tried :

  dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

and I explicitely specify dell USB keyboard, it then picks up that my
keyboard is 'gb' style and not 'us', but the change has no effect even
after a gdm restart.

Any advice ?

Thanks,

I haven't used wicd for a while, but I recall that it writes its own

There are several sample configuration files in the

I have read the man page. I apparently need a valid wpa_supplicant.conf file.
The only one
I can find (/etc/dbus-1/system.d/wpa...) doesn't seem to be valid. I get lots
of errors
about that file when I supply the -D -i and -c parameters.

Thanks,

Paul

"wpa_supplicant" can be run directly. IIRC, "-dd" modifier switched into
debug mode. "man wpa_supplicant" for additional/detailed info on how to
get this done.

That is an important setting to check. Reviwer your "/etc/dbus-1/system.d/
wpa_supplicant.conf" or whatever the config file is. AP and
wpa_supplicant settings must match.

It might be better to put away wicd for a moment and invoke
wpa_supplicant directly with the -d switch. You may have to set the
ssid first with iwconfig(8).

wicd calls wpa_supplicant with wext. I don't see a preferences setting to
change
to cause more debugging.

I just tried as many variations as I could without success. I'm not 100% sure
I am always matching the router settings with the laptop wicd settings.

Thanks for the suggestions - since things work "the old fashioned way" with
/etc/network/interfaces, I presume the driver is good - I'll probably leave
Networkmanager uninstalled, uninstall wicd and use "the old fashioned way" for
Both wired and wireless connections

Oh dear!!

Setting my granddaughter's laptop to talk to her school's wireless network was
a nightmare, and I never did find out why. It connected to other wireless
routers without a problem. I tried 3 - or was it 4? - different distros, I
tried 3 different wireless cards, I asked for help from someone more
knowledgable and experienced than I, I tore my hair out. Eventually, with
Open Suse 11.00, I was getting some sort of response, but still not an actual
connection. In the end, the one person in the school IT department who knew
anything about Linux took the almost-connecting Open Suse install off to the
school IT lab, and came back with it working, having worked thro' several
wireless cards that they had lying around, and found one that worked, which
they donated to her. He may also have done some tweaking,

My laptop with Lenny and that same card does not connect at her school - but
connects without hesitation anywhere else.

I believe the American expression is "go figure!". You have my sympathy, but
I am for now out of ideas.

I assume that you have checked the driver?

Lisi

Try starting "wp_supplicant" in debug mode to make the log more verbose
about that error. It seems failing at some point of the authentication.

Also, try to lower the security a bit by choosing WPA-PSK (TKIP) or WPA2-
PSK (AES+TKIP) instead just AES. Stronger encryption requires better
coberture so devices can "dialogue" smoothly.

When trying WICD did you:

1. Uninstall Network Mangler

2. Comment out the wireless entries in /etc/network/interfaces

3. Reboot

4. Run WICD

If you have not (and you need to have done all of them), I should try it now.

It is possible to stop and restart the network without rebooting, but I feel
that this way makes sure that everyting has to restart. Others MMV.

GRUB menu lines can be syntactically right but it can also fail and don't
boot.

Things than can prevent your system from booting are (but not limited
to): having a wrong root defined or pointing to a wrong/nonexistent
device.

There are still some things one have to manually check to assure a
correct booting but if the system fails to boot you can run GRUB
interactively. Also, as last resort, having a CD with SuperGrubDisk is a
must.
