OT: Kdenlive

El siguiente hilo NO quiere convertirse en flame.
El siguiente hilo NO pretende convertirse en guerra santa.
El siguiente hilo tiene por objeto volverme/nos más eficiente un tipo de tarea.

Por motivos que no vienen al caso, tuve que usar por primera vez en mi
vida un programa que arme una película desde un conjunto de videos y
fotografías (no se rían, tengo 46 años).
Así que puse manso a la obra, y me puse a aprender en tres días
Kdenlive (http://www.kdenlive.org/), dado que cuando pregunté cómo
hacerlo, el 99% de los humanos me contestó MovieMaker. Tres días era
el tiempo disponible para hacer el trabajito.
Les resumo; luego de tres días, y 9 versiones distintas de video,
terminé usando MovieMaker.
¿Por qué? La pésima resolución gráfica de Kdenlaive al momento de
redenderizar la película (lo hice en varios formatos), contra la
resolución estándar wmv de MovieMaker.
Además, que cada proceso de Kdenlive me llevaba una media de dos horas
de redenderización, en MovieMaker apenas entre 20 a 30 minutos (en la
misma máquina; tiene una partición para los juegos de mis hijas).

Acá va la pregunta: ¿Qué cuernos hice mal? ¿Existe algún otro programa
más eficiente o forma de usarlo para aumentar la resolución y en el
camino, aumentar la velocidad de redenderizado?

Estas preguntas van dirigidas a quienes hacen trabajos de edición de
video pesado, no a 15 o 20 fotos alguna vez. En un futuro cercano
voy a tener que hacer este trabajito varias veces más, y realmente,
me desespera tener que usar el s/o de las ventanas.

¿Qué hiciste mal? Nada... la multimedia en linux está a años luz de 
windows o macos, desgraciadamente. Para obtener resultados similares a 
los que obtienes con las herramientas de windows en un par de clicks, 
tienes que dedicar más tiempo (más de tres días, por supuesto) a conocer 
los programas que tienes disponibles y las opciones que permiten.

En cuanto al uso de los recursos, pues dependerá en gran medida del 
hardware que tengas y de los controladores que uses. Partiendo de que 
todos los drivers para los dispositivos están optimizados para windows, 
suerte tenemos en linux de que al menos funcionen, aunque sea lento o 
mal, así que no esperes que un programa de edición de vídeo sea capaz de 
sacar toda la potencia de tu hardware :-/

¿Se puede? Pues sí, afinando al máximo la configuración de los 
componentes del equipo y conociendo los programas. Pero desde luego no se 
hace en dos clicks.

Yo en su momento utilicé Kdenlive para realizar una película usando 
algunos videos y fotos. Tengo que admitir que Kdenlive se colgaba muy a 
menudo, estaba usando testing en Debian y era lógico, además el programa 
estaba bastante verde en su tiempo. Sin embargo el resultado para mi que 
soy un mero aficionado fue bastante aceptable y me dejó encantado que 
Kdenlive tuviera soporte para una infinidad de codecs tanto de videos de 
entrada como de salida. Creo que hoy el proyecto está mucho más maduro, 
pero desde luego no creo que sea tan fácil como MovieMaker. Sin embargo 
hay varias alternativas de edición que puedes probar si Kdenlive no te 
convence:


Openshot
Cinelerra
Jahshaka
Open Movie Editor
Avidemux
Kino

Bueno, la lista es un poco larga, de la cual me parece que el que más 
resultados profesionales permite es Cinelerra pero también parece estar 
más orientado para el uso profesional. Esperemos que la situación de la 
edición del video en Linux mejore con el tiempo.

Puedo asegurarte que el proyecto está maduro, y en cuanto a facilidad
de uso, me pareció más intuitivo y fácil Kdenlive que MovieMaker,
además que el primero tiene un montón de herramientas más que
facilitan el trabajo. Por ejemplo, los efectos de audio y video son
infinitamente superiores, más el hecho de poder sumar pistas a
discreción, sin estar atado a una pista de video y una de audio como
en MovieMaker.
La vista previa fue mucho más espectacular en Kedenlive.
Lo único malo fue el resultado final, el video que produjo fue
decididamente malo, muy pixelizado, amén de la increíble cantidad de
tiempo que consumió para una calidad de MPEG-2.
De hecho, lo terminé descartando cuando decidí subir la calidad, para
ver si se perdía el pixelado, a HDV PAL 1080 50i 2 pass, y estimó 17
horas de trabajo.

Voy a intentar los otros programas que me aconsejan.

Exhange + zimbra

Actualmente tengo un red con varios Exchange pertenecientes a una
organización lo cual garantiza una replica de la GAL entre los Exchange.
Yo quisiera migrar esto a zimbra solo que tengo que hacerlo poco a poco,
para comenzar quisiera saber si es posible montar zimbra en un entorno
mixto es decir que los Exchange convivan junto con zimbra, para eso
tengo que garantizar que zimbra sea capas de ver la GAL de los Exchange
y que se repliquen entre si; como puedo lograr esto ¿???

¿Y que hardware tienes?

No todo es el software.

El mejor software de edición con una tarjeta gráfica o de audio pobre
o hardware muy básico no te va a dar resultador optimos o en un tiempo
razonable.

¿A qué formato, codec y tamaño renderizabas en kdenlive y MovieMaker?

Que tardara más kdenlive que MovieMaker, podría ser porque MovieMaker para el
formato
.wmv no renderiza todo el fichero, sino que solo renderiza las partes a las
que se ha aplicado un efecto (título, transición, etc).
Es una petición histórica de la comunidad de Cinelerra para el formato MPEG,
y
que aún no ha sido desarrollada (la última, pedida desde el año 2004-2005 +-):

Parece que kdenlive tampoco soporta hacer cortes en un video, sin renderizar
todo el fichero:

Es posible que necesites algún firmware para ese chipset, pero antes

alcanza con la primer línea, pero para que no queden dudas que se fue. Y

Total, con tener bien armado el /etc/network/interfaces funciona muy
bien. Y si necesitás algo mas amigable, te recomiendo wicd, que sirve
para todo lo que pretendía ser networkmanager

Intenté con avi, mpeg-2 y Xvid-4, con distintas resoluciones.

cambios. Si hace esto, debe reconocerce que es más eficiente que
Kdenlive.

Eso es así, te lo aseguro. Cualquier cambio, y considerando el tiempo

tampoco me acuerdo mucho. ¿fijate si podés encenderla a la tarjeta con
setserial? (man setserial, no me acuerdo como era).
Acordate que se cuenta desde 0, asi que com1 sería ttyS0, com2=ttyS1 y
así sucesivamente. 
Además está lo que te decían de los irq, si mal no recuerdo, no era
buena idea conectar algo en com1 y com3 ó com2 y com4 porque estaba este
conflicto

Más extremista: con aptitude o synaptic, eliminar y purgar cualquier
cosa que en su nombre tenga la frase network-manager. En testing hay
13 paquetes con este prefijo.

 Total, con tener bien armado el /etc/network/interfaces funciona muy
 bien. Y si necesitás algo mas amigable, te recomiendo wicd, que sirve
 para todo lo que pretendía ser networkmanager

Apoyo ambas sugerencias.

 el siguiente paso sería enviar un coche bomba al que lo escribió xD

Pero es muy raro tener que eliminar un paquete para evitar que se inicie. 
Me suena a bug. Imagina que quiero desactivar samba para que no arranque 
al inicio, ¿tengo que eliminar el paquete completo? Eso no tiene 
sentido :-/

Servidor Web por Consola

Buenas tardes,

*Situación Actual:*

Tengo en este momento una PC (Pentium3 con 256MB y HD 40GB), en éste PC
tengo instalado Debian 5.04 sin entorno gráfico (pues se utilizará para
servidor web solamente), es decir, todo por consola... jejeje

También tengo otros dos PC (conectados en una LAN junto con el Debian), pero
son Windows... (así que no va al caso).


*Inconveniente:*
Cómo puedo montar o copiar mis archivos web (que tengo en una USB) al
servidor Debian a través de consola?... es decir, que sea de una manera mas
práctica y no a través del comando cp, algo asi como Norton Commander?
(espero que lo conozcan).

Nota: El problema no es montar la USB... es copiar archivos de manera
masiva.

Ya, en serio: ¿no habrá algún otro script de arranque que lo necesite y
se encargue de levantarlo?
Digo, porque por ejemplo, yo tengo el samba bajo demanda, solo lo
levanto cuando voy a usarlo, pero el runlevel 0* nunca lo toqué,
entonces a veces al apagar me aparecen mensajes raros de que samba no se
está ejecutando, pero aparecen al desactivar la red

*yo configuré el encendido y apagado de servicios cambiando el nombre a
lo que figura en /etc/rc?.d (s para encender, k para apagar y el número
indica el orden)

Nunca me ha funcionado bien, tampoco en openSUSE, y siempre lo he tenido 
desactivado pero no desinstalado porque nunca está de más tener una 
segunda alternativa a mano.

Pues no sé, el único registro que tengo es que al actualizar el paquete 
de network manager volvió a activarse el script (hasta ese momento no 
había tenido ningún problema).

Bueno, yo lo hice según indica el manual, con update-rc.d network-
manager remove. Lo que no dice el manual es qué sucede cuando se 
actualiza el paquete. Yo doy por hecho que debe respetar la configuración 
del usuario y si el script estaba desactivado, mantenerlo como está, por 
eso os lo preguntaba, vosotros tenéis más experiencia en este tema.

Si no es normal que lo haya activado, abro un informe de fallo y punto. 
Si es normal, tendré que buscar otro sistema para evitar que se inicie 
sin llegar a desinstalarlo.

 No uso wifi.

Ya, pero es que sé que algunos programitas del GNOME lo buscan y 
tampoco me parece mal tenerlo como método alternativo por si falla el

Eso es así, te lo aseguro. Cualquier cambio, y considerando el tiempo
que insume, Kdenlive redenderizaría todo de nuevo.



Prueba con OpenShot a ver qué resultados te da.
Si te sirvió MovieMaker, Openshot te servirá sobradamente.
Ahora bien, si el proceso de render se te antoja muy pesado, prueba a 
hacer lo que te dije arriba: primero usar un códec sin compresión como 
DV (vídeo) y WAV/PCM (audio). En openshot puede indicarle que use DV en 
las opciones avanzadas de exportación.


Y una vez termines, coges el DV final y lo pasas por ffmpeg para darle 
una salida acorde con el formato final.

Mandar un email LARGO

Buenas, tengo un problema con el pc nuevo bajo Linux y estoy recopilando
toda la informacion que creo relevante, asi como lo que he intentado para
resolverlo. Como veo que esta saliendome un archivo de texto bastante largo
queria saber si hay algun metodo recomendado para cosas asi.

Copiás el texto del email en un documento de texto plano y después lo 
comprimís en un tar.gz o zip y lo enviás como adjunto.
Otra opción es que el texto lo tengas en un sitio web y que sólo envíes 
a tus corresponsales el link en el cuerpo del correo.

  Revisa los logs a ver que puede estar pasando. Quizas deteniendo el
  mysql a
  mano (/etc/init.d/mysql stop) y luego eliminando el paquete logres
  desinstalarlo.

Administrar LDAP de Zimbra

bueno el msx88 es algo como loq ue sugieres, lo que me hace falta saber
porque me menciona que me falta algo y me parece que se loe stoy
poniendo que es el terminar END, pero como soy nuevo en eso pues me

 de redenderización, en MovieMaker apenas entre 20 a 30 minutos (en la
 misma máquina; tiene una partición para los juegos de mis hijas).

 Acá va la pregunta: ¿Qué cuernos hice mal? ¿Existe algún otro programa
 más eficiente o forma de usarlo para aumentar la resolución y en el
 camino, aumentar la velocidad de redenderizado?

 Estas preguntas van dirigidas a quienes hacen trabajos de edición de
 video pesado, no a 15 o 20 fotos alguna vez. En un futuro cercano
 voy a tener que hacer este trabajito varias veces más, y realmente,
 me desespera tener que usar el s/o de las ventanas.

Yo estoy en una situacion similar y opuesta; despues de leer mucho que
en linux el video esta en panales, decidi procesar cientos de videos
.flv en un Windows (el trabajo es para quien usa esa maquina y son
importantes); y mi sorpresa fue que aun usando software comprado para
ese ordenador, no pude hacerlo, se atoraban.

Decidi probar con mi ordenador Debian y con Open Movie Editor y
Openshot (probe todos los disponibles en Debian Squeeze), uni los
archivos de 14 minutos cada uno y con ffmpeg hice el resto. Resultado,
me fue mas facil, en terminos de gui, con Debian y no perdi archivos;
dado que por error de cansancio y dedo, borre todos los archivos en
windows y renuncie. OJO: el hardware es importante, como dice Felix.

Conteúdo em flash vira arquivos no /tmp, voce apenas renomeia-os para
.flv e poderá ver offline quando quiser.
Outros tipos de conteúdo, talvez só usando addons no firefox.

Amigos,

preciso atualizar o dovecot 1.1.0 no debian lenny, porém, no repositório
esta é a ultima versão liberada. Preciso pelo menos da 1.1.1 para que um
software rode. Alguem pode me auxiliar? Até hoje tudo que precisei encontrei
nos repositórios, então, nem sei com atualizar um pacote q não tem no
repositório... preciso remover o atual e instalar o novo? ou atualiza
sozinho? nem sei mesmo... alguém me auxilia por favor?

configuração debian squezze, no intel 943/940GML, de dois monitores

tenho enfrentado uma dificuldade no squeeze para configurar um segundo
monitor na instalação que fiz no meu notebook.

o 2º monitor é um samsung 943 bwx, que tem a opção de posição vertical.

O que tenho tentado fazer é ao utilizar o 2º monitor na horizontal
mesmo utilizá-lo  monitor principal, para que o painel com o menu e os
programas abertos fique no segundo monitor.

um segundo problema que notei é que ao configurar os dois monitores o
do notebook fica mais escuro, como se não estivesse ligado na bateria.

Because if my reading of the diff is correct (and was not trimmed of 
other relevant differences) the two sources.list files are identical ;)

Is there a way to empty the cache of known packages, to reload it from
the repositories?  Like, if I renamed /var/lib/dpkg/available.  Is
that safe?

I had similar problems when I used something like Totem or vlc. After
that no other multimedia program would produce sound. Unfortunately I
cannot remember the url but I have read something about pulseaudio that
claims a sound device or service for itself and that killing that
process would restore the sound.

Maybe you can check which device is involved by running your multimedia
program from the commandline, check the messages, identify the device
and find out which process(es) can be involved by using 'sudo lsof
devicename'.

[SOLVED] Re: aptitude not upgrading linux-image-2.6...

 I have an installation in which the linux-image-2.6.26-2-xen-amd64
 package is stuck in aptitude at 2.6.26-25lenny1.  There's a
 -26lenny1 security release that my other installations are seeing.
 apt-get {update,upgrade} doesn't change anything.

The apt cache is on an NFS mount.  I moved the files on the NFS server
earlier, using mv this /there/, across mountpoints on the server
filesystem, which updated all the mtimes.  Apparently apt uses mtime
to check if /var/lib/apt/lists/* files are up-to-date.  The security
Packages is dated 2010-12-01 on the repository.

rm /var/lib/apt/lists/security.debian.org_*_main_*_Packages plus
apt-get update fixes it.

Yes, I'm afraid you'll have to learn how it works. I do this every few
years. Sound in Linux is capricious.

Try the volume control first, probably in alsamixer if you don't have
a GUI. Sometimes that gets reset to zero on one or more channels. Run
speaker-test for some sample sound if you don't have an mp3 easily to
hand.

Most of the trouble I have is because my machines have more than one
sound card, and every year or so an update causes the
detection process to switch the numbering. That's the next thing to
look at if you have a separate or USB sound card *and* motherboard
sound.

Assuming you're using alsa, look at /proc/asound/cards to confirm your
sound card(s) is present (look into detection and driver modules if it
isn't), then try /etc/asound.conf, which may contain a pointer to
another file. The actual asound.conf file will contain a list of
defaults, make sure the card and device numbers are set to the one you
expect. Change it here if it's showing the wrong number.

Beyond that I can't help, as I don't use sound professionally and I
don't get trouble often enough to be familiar with the whole system. I
do have memories of long Google searches to track down details of
arcane asound.conf tweaks, mostly guesses from people who knew no more
than I did. But that was some years ago, and it's probably different
now.

First, this mailing list does not require you to sign in order to read

 Yes, when I did an upgrade via update manager I always got the request  
 for my admin password. It was this 'keyring unlock' popup that through  
 me. When I went system-admin-update manager
 from the toolbar I got the request for password as I normally did. Like  
 I said, update icon that shows up in the toolbar after the system checks  
 for update had that new popup which I never saw before.
 I've done the upgrade so now to see what the next upgrade brings with  
 respect to the 'keyring unlock' popup.

Maybe it was a hiccup. GNOME keyring should unlock when the system starts 
and then just asks for user's password when using NM connections or 
accessing to network shares, but I've never seen it to ask for root's 
password in update manager :-?

Yep, I would also wait and see for the next update available.

with the punchcards ...

Checkinstall problem with conflicting file

The conflicting file was installed with checkinstall also.
Checkinstall should add vc-dwim's info/dir to that one, right?

It can be run in debug mode, but should be done manually, not when the 
service is daemonized (or so says /etc/defaults/saslauthd file).

@Ted: I would also try by playing with/increasing the number of threads 
that can be spawned by the service. By default is set to 5, but if it's 
a busy e-mail server, this number can be easily reached :-?

I recently hit the same problem, but assumed it was just my system 
playing up.


Using a USB floppy drive, I created a FAT floppy from an image file,
but when I wanted to change some files on it, it wouldn't mount.

Copying the floppy to a file using dd, then mounting with loop option 
worked.


There were no read or write errors during any of these processes (except 
on one bad floppy I tried).


I found the same problem with an ext2 formatted floppy. mount -v -t ext2 
/dev/sdb /media/floppy returns success, but nothing is mounted.


I just tried partitioning the floppy with cfdisk, then creating an ext2 
filesystem on /dev/sdb1. This mounted without a problem.


I suspect this is a bug.

mac keyboard on pc

The machines which I use are PC-clones, with various motherboards.  I
use the Dvorak classic keymap on whatever keyboard is handy.  I
touch-type, so the QWERTY labeling of the keys is not an issue.

A few years ago, I went shopping for a better keyboard (one with with
high-quality key switches), and purchased a thin USB Macintosh
keyboard (the board is so thin that a wrist pad is not required).  

The Mac keyboard worked properly under Sarge or Etch (whatever I was
running at the time) when specified as a PS/2 keyboard.  But upon
upgrade to Lenny, I discovered that most of the function keys were not
responsive.

I did not have time to search for the problem, so I reverted to
Logitech USB keyboards, which work without difficulty under Lenny.  

Is this problem a bug in xkb?  Or has it become necessary to specify a
macintosh keyboard during installation?

As a secondary issue, has anyone found a method (other than epoxy)
for permanently disabling the NUM LOCK key?

The HTML code is a mailto:; link, so your default e-mail client should be
launched as soon as you click on there. Maybe your e-mail cient is not
being associated with the mailto:; handler? :-?

Okay, I told you as an alternative. In fact, is the most used method in
mailing lists when someone missed a message (or a whole thread) and wants
to fecth it again to have it archived locally or just to reply to that
message. Many mailing list software (like Majordomo, et al) allow that
option.

So, I just do not know how I can do this - using my email client.

This is the To field.

This sets the In-Reply-To: header field, used in mailing lists for a
correct reference of the cited/thread message. It is hidden.

- Subject=Re:%20Re:%20seeking%20mbox%20of%20debian-user%20from%207-10-2010%

And this sets the Subject: field.

One avoids fighting with this by fetching/requesting the exact message you
want to reply to the mailing list server. By doing it the hard way you have
to completely construct the e-mail message :-)

Anyway, this method lacks the most important thing, which is whole cited text
in the message body, which you have to copy/paste in the new generated message
with a proper quoting. Not very convenient, IMO.

If the reply is still relevant for the subject, it should not matter.
 
 3.  Does it really matter?

Time is relative. Now converts into one year very soon.

In a mailing list that has an archive search facility, having posts which 
provides additional -or complete- information about a problem can help 
future users looking on how to solve the same kind of trouble.

Great.  What a wondeful tool to rebuild a pdf file the way you want.  All I had
to do was: `apt-get install pdfjam' (pdflatex is already installed on my
system); then I got what I wanted with:

 $ pdfnup --nup 2x1 --paper a4paper --noautoscale true --delta 1cm 0cm 
--pages 13-20 --outfile output.pdf ~/input.pdf

The option `--noautoscale' set to the value `true' avoided the reduction, which
is what I wanted.

But now, suppose instead that, for another job, I wish to scale it at my
pleasure: is it not possible?

gnome darkllook theme: missing icon on upperleft

USB soundbar as default audio device

I am trying to set up a USB sound bar on someone else's laptop running
ubuntu 10.10 with a gnome desktop.

Since it did not work out of the box, I thought I'd first enhance my
non-existent skills in this area by first practicising on my machine
with debian ‘lenny’ and no DE environment. 

I discovered rather quickly that what goes on behind the scenes is that
said sound bar is (emulates?) an additional sound card.

As a result, I have to direct each program that produces some form or
other of sound output to use the second audio device rather than the
default builtin sound card.

I am able to get ‘mplayer’ to do this but I have no idea how I could
convince the flash plugin behind my web browser to do this, for
instance.

Is there any way I can make the sound bar the system's default and be
done with it?

While testing, I tried redirection when launching programs from the bash
prompt -- i.e. adding ‘/dev/dsp  /dev/dsp1’ -- with unsatisfactory
results: below par sound quality, loud cracks, the speakers go silent
for brief periods of time, etc.

I do not have access to the other laptop right now, but I would assume
gnome has some sort of GUI that lets you specify your default device
‘system-wide’?

Another thing I noticed is that the volume button on the sound bar does
not work: I have to start alsamixer to control the volume, which is not
optimal. 

Does this mean that I am using a default generic audio USB driver for
this device and that I should look for something a bit more specific
that might support additional hardware features?

While I am at it I thought I might as well learn how these things work
and stop guessing :-)

Is there a reliable up-to-date document that you would recommend
reading?

Can't find latex

Hi,

I have just installed my Linux: debian-504-i386-netinst.iso.

Well it took some time but it was a smooth installation. I accepted the
proposed workstation and base-installation configuration for the
software setup.

No comes the problem. TexLive is installed. But it does not contain LaTeX! I
searched in the KPackage software manager for latex but could only find
some additional packages like latex-cjk-korean.

How do I get LaTeX? Tex-Live should have latex included!

ls -f /usr/bin/*tex* shows 35 files, but not latex.

Latex is in texlive-latex-base. Is that installed?

usb sound devices _are_ additional sound cards (actually anything with a
supported soundchip in linux would be a card)

you can read ALSA docs - they are weired but very good. I usually do few
steps to setup a card. You have two options - to setup system wide or user
specific

dsp is OSS (not ALSA) and it works only with additional modules (loaded and
configured)

check if there is pulse audio installed and running - this might be what you
are looking for (there is something pactrl or alike or gui for this - I'm
not using it but it's the future, so possibly you can use it)

thanks, but it would help though to mention what kind of chip your usb card
has (or vendor + model)

I usually setup my notebook following way

*) Add the user to the audio(+video) group

*) create a file /etc/modprobe.d/sound  with following

   ## ALSA portion
   alias char-major-116 snd
   alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
   alias snd-card-1 snd-usb-audio
   
   ## module options should go here
   #options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=dell-m6,ref,auto
   #options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=ref enable_msi=1
   options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=ref
   #options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=hp-dv5 enable_msi=1 position_fix=1

This way I have always the built in card configured as 0 which means first
and the usb as second

I used to do that by putting a file 'sound' into /etc/modprobe.d like this:

alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
options snd-via82xx index=0
alias snd-card-1 snd_pcsp
options snd_pcsp index=1
alias snd-card-2 snd_ca0106
options snd_ca0106 index=2

the default sound is index=0

I was looking for errors in the maillog file, but there are actually errors
in
the authentication log:  auth.log

The first error is:

Dec  4 17:32:04 myhostname saslauthd[32590]: PAM unable to
dlopen(/lib/security/pam_unix.so): /lib/security/pam_unix.so: cannot open
shared object file: Too many open files

I have a feeling this is a symptom, not the cause of the problem.  SMTP with
sasl
points to pam.  The config at pam.d/smtp doesn't even list pam_unix ,
but the same error is showing for multiple pam modules.
