PS: is recording quality of mic same as linein?

I would expect personal computer sound card line-in and microphone
inputs to use the same design analog-to-digital converter. So, the
sampling rates and bit depths should be the same.

But, microphone inputs are usually monaural. So, if you use a stereo
patch cable from your television to your computer, you will only hear
the left channel.

And, microphone inputs usually have more analog gain. So, you will need
to turn the television volume down and/or reduce the microphone gain in
your mixer application. Either can reduce the signal quality. Failure
to do so will result in clipping.

You will get the best recording if you connect the television line-out
to the computer line-in and match the signal levels.

Fail to boot in UEFI mode after a reinstall of grub-efi

Hi,

I have a Gigabyte MB with some years with an Intel processor capable of
64bits. If I install Windows or Debian from scratch I can boot in
UEFI mode. I can boot a USB pen with a Debian installer in UEFI mode.

If UEFI boot it gets broken for a reason, like replacing the boot
disk, I can not fix the UEFI boot. This time I have followed the
instructions in https://wiki.debian.org/GrubEFIReinstall without
avail.

I need to understand what is broken with my PC and possibly report the
relevant bugs or updating the Wiki page. I have bad experiences
updating BIOS, so I prefer not to do it.

This time I managed to boot the old installation by using a fresh

Hola, buen día.

Intenta con algo así:

find {path} -type d | while read p; do cd "$p"; mogrify -delete 1
-format jpg -- *.tif ; done

Y claro, puedes hacer

find fotos -type f -name '*.tif' -print0 | xargs -0 mogrify
-delete 1 -format jpg --

El print0 es para que los espacios en los nombres no genere problema

Uno de los dos te debe servir, espero

Technically, you can do that.

ssh-keygen generates ssh keys, not x.509 certificates ...

An x.509 cert contains an RSA key signed by a CA. openssl can do
the signing, at which point you've half-reimplemented easy-rsa.

-dsr-

Sure - but it just seems silly to use ssh-keygen, then openssl to
convert it to the right format when openssl (or the easy-rsa wrapper
thereto) can do all the work for you in one go.

Ok, then it would be better to use openssl instead of ssh-keygen?

I'm looking at putting OpenVPN on an established server, and wondering if it
is really nessesary to install easy-rsa when I already have established ways
of generating ssh keys.

easy-rsa is basically a series of scripts to get openssl to do
the right thing for you, consistently.

Do that.

Alternatively, look into installing wireguard from unstable. (It
won't drag in anything weird.) Wireguard matches your conception
of how a VPN should work -- and is currently being integrated
into the Linux kernel, because practically everybody likes it
better than OpenVPN, and most people prefer it to IPsec.

NNTP is not "archaic", which other way delivers the message to me?
All those web thingie options want to have the message somewhere and have me go

Let's rephrase, the system has /some/ network, but poor support
of the card, due to the older kernel perhaps. If you wish to
rule out poor kernel support, you can install a later one from
backports. Instructions are documented below to make use of
that distribution channel:

https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch02.en.html#_updates_and_backports

Surely commands like the following ones should install you a
recent kernel once you modified your /etc/apt/sources.list file
like on the document:

apt update
apt install -t stretch-backport linux-image-amd64 \
linux-headers-amd64

It may also come from missing firmware, like previously with the
installer, in which case you can also attempt an install of
/firmware-linux-nonfree/ from the same repository, and see if
the behavior is much better after a reboot (or use the
/firmware/ package matching your Ethernet card if you wish your
system to remain relatively frugal).

To convince yourself slowness comes from the network card, maybe
you should quantify transfer rates between your various boxes;
to ensure you don't have a bottleneck on the wireless section of
your network for instance. You can copy big files with sftp for
instance, see what are the different rates between the various
machines.

Cheers,

What, directly? Full-size passive speakers, or active ones with

How loud? Just as loud as when the PC is running with the mixers
turned up, turned down, muted? Or just loud enough to be a

You say "turn off" rather than "disconnect". Is that because the
speakers are being run from an amplifier that's independent of the
sound card?

That's what I'm imagining from the description, too. Sounds like all
power's off to the computer... so I'm imagining that...

The card doesn't need "power" to work? Apparently no. This is the
first time I've ever thought about that aspect. That's a constant
checkpoint for things like those CHEAP $5 external hard drive adapters
that have no enclosures, but it's never been a factor for
PCI'ish/plugs into the motherboard type hardware.

Is there some kind of direct wiring going on between the linein and
lineout points? Yeah, I know, never mind on that one. There has to be
something like that for it to work even when the power switch is on.
Something goes in and can only go back out if there is an unbroken
line of connectivity somehow within the product. :)

Those thoughts are coming from sitting here reading Long Wind's
description while knowing that my speakers power on and off separate
from the computer. Wish I had some way to (kicks 'n' giggles) test the
same to see if mine duplicates the result.

Afterthought: This is a stretch of the imagination, YES, but

Is there any way it could be seen as an exploitable vulnerability
where it's possible to interact within the computer even when it's
turned off completely?

Absolute worse, hopefully totally impossible scenario would be that
the boogeyman burglar busts into your office one night, plants some
bad mojo on that PCI card, you boot up your computer the next morning,
and off that bad mojo goes running throughout the rest of the internal
workings...

Yes, I do understand that the card would have to be capable of certain
[tasks]. If that card's not capable, maybe others are?

The easy-rsa is a set of scripts that makes generation of client

If it's not in some form of a recycle bin, I imagine "restore from

Sure - but it just seems silly to use ssh-keygen, then openssl to
convert it to the right format when openssl (or the easy-rsa wrapper
thereto) can do all the work for you in one go.

An x.509 cert contains an RSA key signed by a CA. openssl can do
the signing, at which point you've half-reimplemented easy-rsa.

Fully functional here. Context menu, mouse clicks etc, available on
desktop. Task manager, systray; all functioning normally.

I did an upgrade yesterday and noticed the panel containing my application
launchers, task manager and system tray is fully functional again. However, the
desktop is not. It will not act on mouse clicks at all. Still, it is workable
again (at least for me). I haven't noticed any other problems (apart from pan,
but I suspect that problem is not related and just coincidentally appeared at
the same time).

why do you think it is a software issue? After machine is switched off the
software is dead. Look at the description of the mainboard
