Setup of linux-wlan-ng

2004-03-21 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi,

I have an elitegroup A530+ with a builtin usb-wlan module running with
the newest linux-wlan-ng driver module prism2_usb.

I _can_ use wlan by configuring the card after bootup like this:

,
| modprobe prism2_usb prism2_doreset=1
|
| wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable
|
| wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_autojoin ssid= authtype=opensystem
|
| ifconfig wlan0
|
| route add default gw 192.168.0.1
`

I would like to set up wlan with the interfaces-file in
/etc/networking but... how?

There are some configuration files in /etc/wlan but I think that they
are not touched when I set up wlan.

I have "alias wlan0 prism2_usb" in /etc/modules.conf but when I modprobe
it I get this error:

insel:~# modprobe wlan0
FATAL: Module wlan0 not found.

Second question: How can I set up encryption?

I am running kernel 2.6.4 on sid.

TIA

booting problem with tpconfig after removing it

2004-01-24 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi,

I encountered a strange problem today. Suddenly my notebook stops
booting after starting klogd.

I am running 2.6.1 and unstable.

After booting into single user mode I tried to manually start
everything in rc2.d via /etc/init.d xyz start and discovered that
/etc/init.d/tpconfig hangs. In the shell I could kill it with Ctrl-C,
but during boot up there was no chance to kill it.

Maybe it is because the tpconfig package was removed. I don't know.

So if anybody encountered the same problem. Just remove the links from
/etc or purge the package.

ALi 5451 unter 2.6.1 und ALSA stumm

2004-01-12 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hallo,

lsmod
Module Size Used by
snd_ali545122660 0
snd_ac97_codec 54468 1 snd_ali5451
snd_pcm97892 1 snd_ali5451
snd_page_alloc 11812 1 snd_pcm
snd_timer 24484 1 snd_pcm

/etc/init.d/alsa restart
Storing ALSA mixer settings ... done.
Shutting down ALSA (version 0.9.7): done.
Starting ALSA (version 0.9.7): ali5451.
Restoring ALSA mixer settings ... done.

dpkg -l alsa* | grep ii
ii alsa-base 0.9.8-3ALSA sound driver common files
ii alsa-headers 0.9.8-3ALSA sound driver header files
ii alsa-utils 0.9.8-1Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
(utils)

dpkg -l liba* | grep Advanced
ii libasound1 0.5.10b-1
ii libasound2 0.9.8-2
ii libasound2-dev 0.9.8-2
ii libasound2-plu 0.9.8-2

linux-wlan-treiber

2004-01-09 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hallo,

http://www.fuw.edu.pl/~pliszka/hints/prism2.html

Vielen Dank!

Mh, my fetchmail hangs when I set this option:

preconnect '/usr/bin/mailfilter -M /home/juh/.mailfilterrc'

It uses 50% CPU for minutes. So I killed it after a while.

But it works if there are no messages to kill on the server.

This is on debian unstable

ACPI funktioniert erst beim Reboot

2003-03-07 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hallo,

ich habe ACPI in 2.4.20 aktiviert.

Folgende ACPI-Zeilen sind in meiner .config:

# CONFIG_HOTPLUG_PCI_ACPI is not set

CONFIG_PM=y
CONFIG_ACPI=y
# CONFIG_ACPI_DEBUG is not set
CONFIG_ACPI_BUSMGR=y
CONFIG_ACPI_SYS=y
CONFIG_ACPI_CPU=y
CONFIG_ACPI_BUTTON=y
CONFIG_ACPI_AC=y
CONFIG_ACPI_EC=y
CONFIG_ACPI_CMBATT=y
CONFIG_ACPI_THERMAL=y
# CONFIG_APM is not set

Nun passiert folgendes:

Linux-Notebooks?

Danke und Ciao!

I changed

Typing ä in pgaccess results in a small TM-Sign

But when I use psql

INSERT INTO mytable ("ä");

inserts the right umlaut. But in pgaccess it is displayed as "TM".

Mh, my upgrade was a nightmare. After using dselect, apt-get and dpkg
to excess I finally upgraded my old P100 Potato-Box. It is now running
with a new 2.2.20-kernel. I still have probs with network, which I

worked fine under XFree 3.3.6. Choosing the i128 driver I get this

I solved it this way. I moved libwraster.so.2 in /usr/local to
.libwraster.so.2 and reinstalled wmaker.

Now it is linked against /usr/lib/libwraster.so.2

Is this the normal debian-way? First linking against libs in
/usr/local/lib and if not found linking against /usr/lib ?

Can I force dpkg via apt-get to link against /usr/lib when I have some
libs in /usr/local/lib ?

Window Maker crashes on Woody

2002-01-17 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi,

I used wmaker for years. But I always tried out other
windowmanagers. So I apt-get this one and that one. While doing this
wmaker suddenly stopped working for a while, then worked again, now crashes
again. At the moment I am very happy with blackbox but I am curious
what could be the reason.

I am using a current woody and Window Maker crashes with this message in
.xsession-errors:

/usr/bin/WindowMaker: relocation error: /usr/bin/WindowMaker: undefined symbol:
RReleaseImage

I am starting X with startx and "exec wmaker" in .xsession

All the other windowmanagers (KDE, Gnome/sawfish, blackbox, ion,
ratpoison etc.) work fine.

Any hint?

"Keine Berechtigung" means AFAIK "No permission".

What is the appropiate force-command to remove the package.

It is not an issue of the new wmaker, but was there before. But when I

X with ssh cannot open display

2001-10-31 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi!

I fear this is a faq.

It is said that ssh tunnels the x-connection and that all you have to
do is:

To login with
% ssh -X -l username host
% password
and type
% xterm

Nothing about removing -nolisten tcp in xserverrc and so on.

But when I do it, I get the error

cannot open display

I have the default settings in the ssh-configs on woody.

I have a RIVA TNT2 Card.

So I'll use the old drivers again.

yesterday a new tetex-bin came up with a dist-upgrade following

problems to shutdown /w Kernel 2.4.3 and X 4.0.3

2001-06-02 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hello debians!

I have problems to shutdown.

Kernel 2.4.3 with apm
X 4.0.3
xdm

System runs woody

Yesterday after exiting wmaker I switched to console logged in as root
and said shutdown -h now

Three lines of shutdown messages appeared and then nothing more
happens. I had to switch it off. Naturally today the disks had to be
fsck'ed.

Is it possible that this problem is caused by X? A second problem is,
that I cannot switch back from console to X because X goes wild using
99% of my CPU in the background.

Using Unicode in emacs20

2001-05-03 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi,

I think I am going to solve a weird problem. I never managed to run
emacs20 with utf-8 encoded files. Now I know the reason. I am using
emacs20 and had the package user-de installed. This contains the file

/etc/emacs/site-start.d/50user-de.el

which contains the line

(standard-display-european t)

This variable is more or less obsolet, removes the mule-menu from
emacs20 and prevents emacs from showing unicode-fonts when using the
mule-package from Otfried Cheong http://www.cs.uu.nl/~otfried/Mule/
. Who wants to use unicode in emacs should comment out this variable
in his .emacs and in 50user-de.el

I wrote a bugreport about this.

Problems with CD-Burner after upgrading to Kernel 2.4.3

Hi,

I recently upgraded to kernel 2.4.3 with the packages of Adrian

Of course there is no disc inside.

I have an IDE-Burner with SCSI-emulation. The only problem I really
have with my burner is, that two of six burnings on CD-RW failed. But
that is maybe another question, because I had the same problem with
the old kernel.

So how can I get rid of the message?

This was exactly what disturbed me, when I configured DSL.

I did the following which seems not to be the debian way.

,[ /etc/init.d/network ]
| ifconfig eth0 up
`

I even run update-rc.d network default

,[ interfaces ]
| # /etc/network/interfaces -- configuration file for ifup(8), ifdown(8)
|
| # The loopback interface
| iface lo inet loopback
|

| # network 192.168.1.0
| # netmask 255.255.255.0
| # broadcast 192.168.1.255
`

So how can I configure DSL the debian way. I would like to use my
homenet _and_ DSL at the same time.

Shall I simply insert:

iface eth0 up

in interfaces?

Sorry for answering my own massage. But yesterday I managed to connect

I have this in /etc/ppp/ppp_on_boot

,[ ppp_on_boot ]
| ###!/bin/sh

| # soon as the system comes up, connecting to `provider'.
| #
| # If you also make this file executable, and replace the first line

| # The location of the ppp daemon itself (shouldn't need to be changed)
| PPPD=/usr/sbin/pppd

| # The default provider to connect to
| $PPPD call dsl-provider
|
| # Additional connections, which would just use settings from
| # /etc/ppp/options.
| #$PPPD ttyS0
| #$PPPD ttyS1
| #$PPPD ttyS2
| #$PPPD ttyS3
`

It hangs with this message:

Cannot determine ethernet address for proxy ARP
   local IP address 192.42.172.1
   remote IP address 10.112.112.112

The local IP comes from /etc/hosts. But the message is the same, when
I erase the entry in /etc/hosts.

When I start with

DSL with pppoe

2001-03-31 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi,

I want to use T-DSL with pppoe from stable.

I want to have the ability to change without much configuring from DSL
to ISDN and vice versa.

I set up pppoe as written in README.Debian. So I edited
/etc/ppp/peers/dsl-provider and all the other files.

When I do a ping always ippp starts a connection to my provider.

In /etc/ppp/ppp_on_boot I edited the default provider to
$PPPD call dsl-provider

But all this does not alter the behaviour of pppd.

Can anyone give me a hint, what to do?

Is there any HOWTO to set up pppoe in the right debian-way.

cd /usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.18pre21 # this is my kernel-source
make-kpkg clean
make-kpkg -revision=custom.1.14 kernel_image
make-kpkg -revision=custom.1.14 modules_image
dpkg -i kernel-image-2.2.18pre21_custom.1.14_i386.deb
dpkg -i lm-sensors-2.2.18pre21_2.4.4-1+custom.1.14_i386.deb
shutdown -r now

The modules are in /lib/modules/2.2.18pre21

NO device files in /dev

And I get the following errormessage.

debian:/usr/src/modules# modprobe i2c-piix4
/lib/modules/2.2.18pre21/misc/i2c-piix4.o: init_module: Das Gerät oder die
Ressource ist belegt
Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters

/lib/modules/2.2.18pre21/misc/i2c-piix4.o: insmod i2c-piix4 failed

The manuals of lm-sensors are not very good concerning the debian way
of compiling the modules via make-kpkg. I am very confused. I am
randomly searching the manuals, because I do not really know what to
look for. :-(

> or else have a kernel with recent i2c support (2.4.2 does)

Maybe. I am hesitating because you need some package out of
unstable/testing.

I ran sensors-detect. It loaded some modules, but there are no
additonal files in /proc and no apropriate device-files. It shows me a
line which already was in /etc/modutils/lm-sensors.

Mh, perhaps I should have looked closer into the manuals. It seems
that sensors 1.0 does not support my VIA-Chipset. Is there an other
version around?

Thanks anyway

There is a i2c-source in the lm-sensors-source package and many
i2c-modules were created.

Thanks for your message.

I did the following:

make-kpkg clean
make-kpkg -revision=custom.1.14 kernel_image
make-kpkg -revision=custom.1.14 modules_image

(make-kpkg complains about revision, I hit return.)

dpkg -i kernel-image-2.2.18pre21_custom.1.14_i386.deb
dpkg -i lm-sensors-2.2.18pre21_2.4.4-1+custom.1.14_i386.deb

While rebooting I got a message of an unresolved symbol while
modules-calculating. I believe it was gl518sm or gl520sm.

And this is the errormessage, when I want to load the module.

debian:/home/juh# modprobe i2c-piix4

/lib/modules/2.2.18pre21/misc/i2c-piix4.o: insmod i2c-piix4 failed

The first line means device busy I think.

There are no /dev/i2c files around. How can I create them. Is there a
skript?

lm-sensors with kernel-package

2001-03-27 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi!

I apt-got lm-sensors-source and lm-sensors.

The sources are in /usr/src/modules

My current kernel-source is /usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.18pre21

I do not want to patch my kernel but use it as a module. I've read
that I may want to use kernel-package to install the modules.

I altered the Makefile and set the right path to the kernel-source:
/usr/src/kernel-source-2.2.18pre21

Now what shall I do?
Simply type
make-kpkg -revision=X.X. modules_image
and then
dpkg -i ../modules.X.X.deb

I have built my kernel with make-kpkg, which is a wonderful tool, but
is this the right way to install lm-sensors? Do I have to compile a
new kernel first?

What are the required steps?

TIA!

I've done this:

apt-get install magicfilter

and then

magicfilterconfig

Answered the few questions and ... started to print.

No need of magic printtool, when you have a magic filter. ;-)

Backup solution for CD-RW

2001-03-22 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi!

People on this list wrote about backup-scripts for CD-RWs. I want to
setup such a solution for my 2-Box-Home-Network. Is there any
preconfigured debian-way to do this?

I had a look at some scripts on freahmeat such as

 bbackup-0.52
 burn_baby_burn-0.9.2
 cdar
 cdbackup
 cdbackup-0.5.2
 cddump-0.6
 cdrecord-scripts.tar.gz
 discbackup
 mkcdrec
 multiCD
 scdbackup-0.6

Are there any recommendations? According to the REAMEs nearly all
scripts do what I want, but all seems to need some adaptation. What
are your experiences?

I want to make daily backups of /home on a CD-RW. Today there are only
300 MB of Data, but perhaps some day it will be more than 650 MB, so
it would be nice to have either a compression-option or to have the
ability to make multivolume-cds.

Some month ago I wanted to set up kbackup, but I could not persuade it to
talk with my Zip-Drive.

Try "texconfig" as root and set the offset in the dvips section.

Re: No sound with CT5880 on board

2001-03-14 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hallo f1k!

I have a CT5880 on board and it definitely works with the es1371
driver. I first tried it with passive speakers where I could not hear
anything. So I tried alsa, but could not really understand the
documentation. So I tried it again with es1371 in a 2.2 kernel. And
with aktive speakers it works fine.

OT: Logitech cableless Wheelmouse distorts monitor

2001-03-14 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi!

I am using a cableless Logitech wheelmouse at /dev/psaux with the
imps/2 protocol. Sometimes the mice does not react, but this is
seldom, so generally it works fine.

But I discovered that in some applications, eg. mozilla, the cursor
(arrow) distorts some lines on the monitor when I move it
vertically. The distortion affects only the lines the mouse touches
while moving. And you must look closely to recognize it.

I am using Potato with the old Xfree 3.3.6.
The Card is a TNT2 Pro 128 AGP with 32 MB and TV out running at
1152x864 and 16bpp on a LG Flatron 17'' Monitor.

I fear it is not debian-related but all hints are appreciated.

Any problems with this hardware?

2001-03-01 Thread Jan Ulrich Hasecke
Hi!

It is time to buy a new computer. Will I face any problems with this
hardware?

Board: Socket A GIGABYTE 7ZX Via 133 ATX with Sound Blaster 128
   Sound on board

CPU: AMD K7 Thunderbird 900 MHz

RAM: SD-RAM 256 MB PC133

Video: Riva 128 TNT2 Pro AGP 32MB & TV out
   or
GeForce 2 MX AGP 32MB DDR Creative Labs

I will install Debian 2.2 or woody of course.

Any problems with this hardware?

Do I have to look for NVidia-Drivers on their homepage or will X run
out-of-the-potato-box?

The on-board-sound-chip is an original SoundBlaster. It can be
deaktivated.

Would you recommend to use X4.0.2 and the newest Kernel 2.4.2?

I've heard about those minimal requirements compiling Kernel 2.4.2.

TIA
