No it is linux community doesn't support gif format because of it patent
for compression. But you can recompile GIMP with support for gif without
any problem.

GIF is a patented format.  It can be (and is) argued that supporting
it without paying patent license fees is illegal.  Therefore no
"free" (libre) software collection can support it. You can download a
GIF support module for GIMP at your own risk from nonfree (the last
time I looked, anyway, which was a fair time ago).
