I have mentioned the lack of unetbootin success a few times on this mailing list before myself. The Debian installation manual, however, has worked 100% of the time for me, including with dvd .iso images (a fat16 boot partition on the usb stick containing the vmlinuz, etc. files, and then an ext3 partition for the dvd .iso image).
