Make sure you're not using the "Search" button at the very top of the page; you need to use the one in the first paragraph of the body, where it says "Browse or SEARCH the Debian mailing lists".

I have not even seen such a search engine. In the meantime, though, you might try searching the archive of your choice page by page. In Netscape you can use , then , and in lynx you can use (the foreslash, for search), then enter keywords.
