I use gmane. It's not just neat in concept; it works pretty well in
reality, too!

(I'd rather have a newsgroup than a mailing list so that I can
consciously *choose* which messages to save, rather than having to
decide to delete them. With a mailing list, I end up becoming a total
packrat and having to work way too hard to find the messages I really
need to see ... at which point I might as well search the archives,
anyway =P )

This isn't possible directly via news, because it's a one-way news
gateway. However, you can always read it via news and then follow-up by
email by sending a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You do not
have to be subscribed to post to this list.

On the other hand, you can also use Gmane (?) which is a service that
allows two-way access to a variety of open-source and technical related
mailing lists via NNTP. It's kind of neat in concept.

not correct. I'm posting this through a newsgroup, and at least during my
tests period, every post I had got to my mailing-list account. you just
have to find a server that allow posting. some ISP's (includeint mine)
allow posting but indeed only their news customers will see the post). I'm
using "sunsite.dk" but you have to subscribe to them, and then to another
list (I don't remember where, but send a test email and in the refusal mail
you'll get the link).

Really? I'm surprised, then, that my posts show up on the mailing list
archive ...

Nope. It's a one-way gateway. Posts via the newsgroup only show up
in the newsgroup, or so I've been told. The rest of us use the
mailling list (SMTP; aka email). (btw, subscription doesn't matter)

IIRC, you don't need to be subscribed to post to the list, so I don't
think your subscription has anything to do with it.

The list had some issues dealing with massive swen attacks, but it's
"much better now." I would try posting through the newsgroup again and
see if it works now.

I'm posting this from the newsgroup, and I've been using it for the last
several days.

Err ... just to confirm we're talking about the same thing, you mean
gmane, right?
