If you have two monitors hooked up to a sigle nVidia card then I think
there's a possibility to use an nVidia-specific solution instead of
Xinerama (it's called TwinView I think). Maybe you have more luck
combining that with compiz...

I have 2 video cards.

* geforce 4400 pci
* GeForce 6200 LE pci express

Thanks :)

Compiz is working or AIGLX? I saw that AIGLX was working for you. Just
thought that there was something else in X that may be the problem.

This Wiki/Howto.

Sorry I couldn't help more.

No need, since it works, as I tried, and apparently failed, to tell
above :-)

Where did you get the Beryl packages from?

I start compiz with "compiz --fast-filter --replace"

Just noticed this. I don't know if will help.

I did that, but the new Nvidia drivers broke xinerama
(I use a dual head setup). It just would not start.

So i decided disable compiz for the moment, and use xinerama.
(With the drivers in sid).

Yep. I just finished installing nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel-source
from experimental. I wasn't even aware of an experimental repository
until now. :/

Anyway, it works for Compiz and Beryl for me. I don't know what may be
causing your problem. If you like, I can send you my xorg.conf.

I do know that when I got AIGLX working, before I set up Compiz, X was
noticeably faster starting up and faster in general.

I'm not sure of the nvidia driver version in experimental. If it's
8776 then it will not work.

Ah, you mean that _checking_ if the driver is in Debian (experimental)
doesn't actually install it? Damn, I thought it did... ;-)

Thanks for pointing it out to me!

Now I'm off to implement that package manager that does what I want
rather than what I tell it too...

Download the driver from nvidia and install it.
You will have to remove the nvidia-glx package or you will end up
having to reinstall the driver after every reboot.

Sid + nVidia + Compiz == no good?

2007-01-25 Thread Magnus Therning
I've been trying to get Compiz to run on my Debian Sid system. This is
the setup:

 % lspci|grep idia
 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44A [GeForce 6200]
(rev a1)
 % dpkg -l compiz\*
 Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
 | Status=Not/Installed/Config-files/Unpacked/Failed-config/Half-installed
 |/ Err?=(none)/Hold/Reinst-required/X=both-problems (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
 ||/ Name   VersionDescription
 +++-==-==-
 ii compiz 0.2.2-1OpenGL window and compositing manager
 ii compiz-core0.2.2-1OpenGL window and compositing manager
 ii compiz-gnome 0.2.2-1OpenGL window and compositing manager - GNOM
 ii compiz-gtk 0.2.2-1OpenGL window and compositing manager - Gtk
 ii compiz-plugins 0.2.2-1OpenGL window and compositing manager - plug

I've followed the instructions at [1] to configure Xorg with AIGLX and
it seems it's working:

 % grep -i aiglx /var/log/Xorg.0.log
 (**) Option "AIGLX" "true"

When I run

 % compiz --replace

from the command line metacity's decorations disappear but nothing comes
in their place and the windows are left without frames/title bars. The
mouse pointer is still functional, but when moving it into the terminal
where I started compiz it disappears. None of the windows are
responsive to the mouse. When switching to the console and back my X
screen is all black, though the mouse pointer is still visible.

Any pointers to what the problem might be and how to solve it would be
very appreciated.

/M
