So you had previously installed FreeCAD from a non-Debian source?
Remove it. If necessary go into /usr/local/lib and remove any libraries
the non-Debian FreeCAD package installed.

Leftover libraries in /usr/local can cause some *very* subtle problems.

Okay, I solved it. There have been some old leftovers in /usr/local. I
removed them and everything was working again.

Sorry for the noise.

True. So how did it get on your computer? Did you install the Debian
FreeCAD package, or did you install FreeCAD from elsewhere?

The Debian FreeCAD package works fine for me.

Not having been installed from a Debian package does not prevent it from
requiring root.

this library.

Perhaps an update mucked it up (or, if it was me, mucking around as

So this is the question really, what makes a normal user look for that

The funny thing is that this file isn't in any Debian package.

So, I don't know why can it run with root.

You should check this file's libhdf5_serial.so.100 permissions/group and
add your user to that group.
Hopefully that will fix it. Alternatively you can run with `sudo
freecad` but it s not ideal to run

programs as root.
