Bug#184831: emacsbidi package

2003-08-12 Thread Janusz S. Bień

I am afraid I don't know Debian well enough to be able to help, so I
forward the letter to Debian Bug Tracking System (and Joshua M. Kwan
who sent already some comments to BTS) and debian-emacsen list.

Best regards

Janusz

  The best way to widen the users base is to include emacs-bidi in
  popular Linux distributions. Therefore I would like to draw your attention
  to
  the Debian package which I descovered just today.

  It is available at

  http://www.pipapo.org/www/www/Files/emacsbidi

 $ grep emacs /etc/apt/sources.list
 # bidi emacs
 deb http://www.pipapo.org/www/www/Files/emacsbidi ./

 I figured I am not an addicted emacs user, but being a debian user makes
 me the perfect test-subject for the package

  and can be installed in the standard way with apt-get,
  aptitude etc.

  Here is its description:

   Package: emacsbidi
   Version: 0.9-1
   Section: editors
   Priority: optional
   Architecture: i386
   Depends: libc6 (= 2.3.1-1), libjpeg62, libncurses5 (= 5.3.20021109-1),
  xlibs ( 4.1.0)
   Conflicts:
  emacs20,emacs20-dl,emacs21,emacsen-common,emacs21-common,emacs-intl-fonts
   Installed-Size: 79084
   Maintainer: Ayman Negm [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   Description: GNU Emacs with Arabic, Hebrew support
Emacs-bidi it support UTF-8 and bidi language like
Arabic, Persian and Hebrew. It's based on GNU Emacs21.
This is a development version and not the official release.
Please read http://www.m17n.org/emacs-bidi/index.html.

  I haven't tested it, because it is the *replacement* for the standard
  Gnu Emacs package. An obvious wishlist is to allow emacsbidi to
  coexist piecefully with other Emacsen, as it is the case with emacs 20
  and emacs 21.

 ~# apt-get install emacsbidi

   hyperlatex junior-programming junior-writing python-elisp x-symbol xemacs21
   xemacs21-bin xemacs21-gnome-nomule xemacs21-mule xemacs21-support
 The following NEW packages will be installed:
   emacsbidi

 Not just gnu emacs. xemacs as well. why???
 And why is this fonts package being removed?

 What the heck. I'll live without an emacs for a while...

 Installed...

 Oops... I can't figure out how to set up Hebrew font.
 Can't see any emacs-bidi-specific documentation in the package. E.g.:
 http://www.m17n.org/emacs-bidi/index.html as it is.

 Tried:

   emacsbidi -fn heb8x13

 And typed some Hebrew chars using the X winodws's Hebrew keyboard. No
 bidi rendering sighted.

 Using c-u c-\ for the input method: still no bidi rendering.

 A change of font:

  emacsbidi -fn '-misc-fixed-*-iso10646-1'

 And still no bidi for me.

 What am I missing?

 Do I really need special per-user settings? Can they be done
 system-wide? Are there any sane defaultsthat could be given by the
 package?

  Thanks to official ITP (Intend to Package,
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?archive=nobug=184831),
  there is a chance that emacsbidi will be included in the future
  official Debian distribution.

 Neverball is a colorful 3D arcade game in which you tilt the floor to roll the
 ball through the obstacle course before time runs out. It requires patience,
 concentration and a bit of luck.

  Please apply the enclosed patch before packaging - this closes a
 buffer overflow attack which is locally exploitable.

  (I'm not sure if you're planning on making the binary setgid games,
 if you are you should certainly apply this!)

Bug#154281: libdvdcss

2003-08-12 Thread Sam Hocevar
On Wed, Jul 30, 2003, Robert Millan wrote:

 Ok. What are the necessary steps to request that we hire a lawyer to
 resolve this? Can I do it on my own or is SPI the entity who should take
 action here?

   I don't know about those steps, but I have some additional information
about libdvdcss. As you know, it is already distributed worldwide by
many OS vendors (OpenBSD, FreeBSD, Gentoo, SourceMage). Only FreeBSD
seems to be distributing it in binary form. But the Lindows DVD player [1]
also came to my attention.

   This player is based on Xine (which is GPL). I first thought they
were using a closed-source access plugin to decrypt DVDs, but according
to non-official sources they are actually using libdvdcss and bought a
license for it from some DVD organization [2].

   I find this extremely interesting, because:

  1. It seems to legitimize the very _existence_ of libdvdcss. libdvdcss
 blatantly ignores the disc region, is shipped with 31 player keys
 (while commercial players only have their single private key), and
 can crack the DVD's title key if the usual way to retrieve it does
 not work. All this with the benediction of some DVD organization
 (which is probably the DVD CCA)!

  2. If Lindows are respecting the GPL, it means that libdvdcss is
 shipped with no additional restriction. Which means we just have
 to download libdvdcss from them, and re-distribute it. It's a
 magical world.

   Is anyone a LindowsOS Warehouse subscriber? I think it would be
interesting to know what license the DVD player is distributed under,
and the member's price is only $4.95. The normal price is $39.95 and
I definitely don't have that much money to spend.

It would be a good idea to check the return value of snprintf() too -
and be careful, doing things with snprintf()'s return value portably is
a pain - since otherwise you may produce wrong results instead of
overrunning a buffer and not notice.

I wish something like man-db's strappend() [1] were more widely used.
I've been fixing a lot of buffer overruns by moving to that (he says,
going off to try to stop the damn thing segfaulting).

[1] Append a varargs list of strings to its first argument, allocating
or reallocating memory as necessary. If the first argument is NULL,
concatenate all the strings given into newly allocated memory. The
above would look like this:

  char *dst;

  if ((dir = getenv(HOME)))
  {
  dst = strappend(NULL, dir, /, src, NULL);
  return 1;
  }

  if ((vol = getenv(HOMEDRIVE))  (dir = getenv(HOMEPATH)))
  {
  dst = strappend (NULL, vol, dir, \\, src, NULL);
  return 1;
  }

Bug#204658: ITP: develock -- additional font-lock keywords for the developers

It couldn't be adapted for Makefiles (I think on debian/rules)
or *sh scripts?

If it is not in the current version please consider that a pre-upload
wishlist bug which will mutate in a real one when the uploaded package
lacks that functionality :)

   With this library, programs can test the validity of German account
   numbers and bank codes (BLZ). ktoblzcheck implements the Bundesbank's

Given the nature of the library and the set of authors, I'd expect home
