X Strike Force XFree86 SVN commit: rev 909 - branches/4.3.0/sid/debian

Log:
Make phony patch-audit target depend on a real one which creates a stamp
file -- prompted by extreme aggravation with GNU Make when dragging the
XFree86 build process through several targets by hand, and discussions with
Andrew Suffield, who understands Make better than I do.

Undocument phoniness of patch-audit target in changelog; "patch-audit" is
phony, but its $(STAMP_DIR) counterpart is not.

Mesa, as the Mesa environment variable MESA_NO_3DNOW works around it.

And it can be extracted using ...what? The last time I looked,
parse-edid did not support it and the VESA specs are available for $$$
only.

Hi,

Do other OpenGL programs (tuxracer, ...) work ?
What kind of video card do you use, and at which color depth ?

You appear to be overlooking some of the purpose of my patch. Consider
the phenomenon of a game with a manpage, which uses imake as its build
system.

Bug#227578: xbase-clients: xmodmap stopped working

2004-01-13 Thread Rainer Dorsch
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.1.0-16woody1
Severity: normal

Hello,

I am loading an xmodmap using

$ xmodmap .Xmodmap

and .Xmodmap looks like this

$ cat .Xmodmap
! The first four keysyms are reached as follows:
! 1. The decision between keysym1 or keysym2 (and keysym3 or keysym4)
!is done by the key with the keysym Shift_[LR] (or maybe by the key
!with the modifier bit keysym
! 2. The decision between the keysym1/keysym2 and keysym3/keysym4 group is
!done by the key with generates the Mode_switch keysym (which is in this
!case the left Alt key).

keycode 30 = u U udiaeresis
keycode 32 = o O odiaeresis
keycode 38 = a A adiaeresis
keycode 39 = s S ssharp
keycode 0x1A = e E EuroSign cent
keycode 113 = Mode_switch
$

running xmodmap worked, e.g.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xmodmap -pke|grep " 26"
keycode 26 = e E EuroSign cent
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ xmodmap -pke|grep 113

That is all ok so far. But when pressing now AltR+ I always get

MESA_NO_3DNOW=1 makes things work.

Interestingly MESA_NO_SSE=1 MESA_NO_3DNOW=1 glxgears produces pretty much the
same framerates as just MESA_NO_3DNOW, which leads me to wonder if it's
failing to use SSE and could possibly run faster.

Michel, is this likely a Mesa-wide problem, or specific to the MGA

Bug#226973: xserver-xfree86: [glint] second card at wrong resolution

Yep. It probably doesn't happen on x86, since the int10 stuff
initializes the card with the onboard bios. Using a x86 emulator in X to
run this bios might be a solution.

Ho. definitively some registers who are bad. It has been a long time
since i have looked at the pm2 specs (kind of 98ish i think) though.
Maybe you could get hand of the free TI-pm2 specs and look for yourself ?

You would dump all the possible registers, and see which one is
different. Enabling debugging in the glint driver would also do. You can
safely run no-accel on these for the tests, as this is definitively not
an accel issue, but a video out/ramdac one.

Sound sreasonable.

Currently using Herbert's 2.4.24-1. I tried various 2.6 kernels prior
to 2.6.1, but xdm couldn't seem to start the server and the USB HID
drivers didn't seem to be functional.

> Can you describe me the symptoms again ? what exactly did you see on the
> second head ?

The second head is currently running WindowMaker with the default Debian
background. In the upper left corner, there is the 1/Main clip.
Directly to the right of that (I assume by 64 pixels or so) is the exact
same 1/Main clip. In the border between the two are some flickering
white lines. The rest of the screen is filled with horizontal
flickering black and whitish lines. The left edge of the swirl is on
the right hand side of the screen. It appears 5 times. The "debian"
only appears as "de", though there are about 5 d's and 3 or 4 e's,
overlapping. The clips themselves look perfect, but nothing else does.

Thanks.

Ok, this may be the problem. The first one is initialized by the pm2fb,
while the second is not. This mean either some initialization problems,
or the fact that X doesn't initialize some values set by pm2fb.

What kernel are you using, maybe it would be best to work on a 2.6
kernel and try to adapt the pm2fb to the new framework or something.

Can you describe me the symptoms again ? what exactly did you see on the
second head ?

Also, i am CCing the linux-fbdev mailing list, as there are chance that
they would have an insight on this.

Great, thank you! I have adapted it, added the paths to the gdm and wdm
config files, and cleaned up the English to suit my own persnickety
standards. I'll be committing it shortly.

The above request is out of the scope of this bug report, and I'd rather
not resolve the issue this way. A superior approach, I think, would be
to have a README.Debian that is placed in *every* XFree86 binary
package.

That is the center of the confusion.

asm-sparc/kbio.h:

/* Used by KIOC[GS]RATE */
struct kbd_rate {
unsigned char delay;/* Delay in Hz before first repeat. */
unsigned char rate; /* In characters per second (0..50). */
};

linux/kd.h:
struct kbd_repeat {
int delay;  /* in msec; <= 0: don't change */
int period; /* in msec; <= 0: don't change */
/* earlier this field was misnamed "rate" */
};

One of those is kbd_rate, the other is kbd_repeat. They aren't the
same type. I imagine from the errors that the X source file in
question uses both types.

It sounds like it's germane to RV280 support, so 030b wouldn't be

Okay, let's try to understand this with reference to the actual shell
script.

19 # set default display manager
 20 DEFAULT_DISPLAY_MANAGER_FILE=/etc/X11/default-display-manager
 21
 22 OWNERS=
 23 if db_metaget shared/default-x-display-manager owners; then
 24 OWNERS="$RET"
 25 fi

Looks like this worked right. $OWNERS got set to "kdm, xdm".

 26
 27 CHOICES=
 28 if db_metaget shared/default-x-display-manager choices; then
 29 CHOICES="$RET"
 30 fi

I'm not sure this worked as expected. db_metaget exited with a 0 exit
status, but $CHOICES was set to "".

 32 if [ -n "$OWNERS" -a -n "$CHOICES" ]; then

$OWNERS is non-null but $CHOICES is not. Therefore the body of this
block is skipped.

Hmm, the body of this loop should probably be entered if $OWNERS is
non-null. In fact I don't reference $CHOICES within it, so I was
probably being overly cautious. I see this happened in revision 506.

Okay, I think I have found the bug. I will fix this and look for
similar bad logic in the other maintainer scripts.

Thanks for your report.

A changed type? To date I have only heard this characterized as a
change to the name of a structure member.

Uh, okay.

...even though on some architectures, the structure member is renamed,
and on others, it isn't? That seems to be what elmo is saying from the
IRC log.

Unfortunately, I don't know what you mean by "properly".

What do you mean by the "latter rate"? I thought the same thing was
being referred to in both cases: the kbd_rate struct.

running, is listening on the TCP port, and/or engage in some network
 troubleshooting.

+*) Why are some fonts (or graphical rulers) sized incorrectly?
+
+Programs that try to optimize font sizes for better screen output (such as
+FontConfig-based applications) and those that try to show real-world geometry
+(like inch/centimeter scales in the GIMP) need to know the pixel density of
+the display to be accurate. This value is the ratio of the display's pixel
+resolution to the physical size of your monitor -- generally between 70 and
+120 DPI (dots per inch). If the DPI value used by the X server does not match
+the actual monitor characteristics, applications that use this information are
+likely to display fonts and other graphics that are scaled incorrectly based
+on this inaccurate information. You can use the xdpyinfo program in the
+xbase-clients package to check the assumed monitor size and dot resolution.
+The DPI value is retrieved by X client applications by querying the X server;
+therefore, the X server needs to know (or be told) what value to use.
+
+Two ways to get an accurate DPI value to your application are:
+
+1) pass the -dpi option to the X server (this also works for many non-XFree86
+ X servers); or
+2) let the XFree86 X server calculate the DPI value based on the DisplaySize
+ parameter in its configuration file, XF86Config-4. See the
+ XF86Config-4(5x) manual page for details.
+
+The first method is recommended if you already know the DPI value of your
+monitor and wish to always run it at the same resolution; the second method is
+the more flexible way, but only available for the XFree86 X server.
+
+Locate and edit the scripts which start the X server:
+
+/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc for xinit and startx (in the xbase-clients package)
+/etc/gdm/gdm.conf for gdm
+/etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers for kdm
+/etc/X11/wdm/Xservers for wdm
+/etc/X11/xdm/Xservers for xdm
+
+ Passing the -dpi option to the X server:
+
+ In each of these files above, replace the value after -dpi with the correct
+ number.
+
+ Letting the XFree86 X server calculate the DPI:
+
+ In each of the files above, remove the -dpi word and the following number.
+ Then edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and locate the "Monitor" section there.
+ Add a line like:
+
+DisplaySize 288 216
+
+ to it. The numbers above are horizonatal and vertical dimensions of the
+ monitor's visible screen area (in milimeters) which you can often find in
+ the monitor's manual. Manually measuring the visible screen area with a
+ ruler or tape measure may be the most precise method, but keep in mind that
+ depending on the modeline definitions, the exact measurements of the visible
+ portions screen may differ from mode to mode.
+
+When you've finished, restart the X server and use xdpyinfo to check the new
+DPI settings.
+
*) Why doesn't the X server package just depend on the xfonts-base package?

(I often get this question, accompanied by rhetoric like, "1 CANT BEL1EVE U

Sure.I don't know if this is relevant, but the first card is is
picked up by the PM2 framebuffer driver (the second is not, because the
driver doesn't support multiple cards--I'm trying to copy the multiple
card support from pm3fb but I don't really know what I'm doing.

Neither is relevant once xfree86 is uploaded to unstable, which will be
done when the patch audit is complete.

On 9 October, submitter claimed that the then-current upstream version
of Xft (2.1.2) resolved this problem. The version then in Debian
unstable was Xft 2.1.1.

By 15 October, Xft 2.1.2 was in Debian unstable, and the submitter was
asked to confirm the continued existence of this bug.

So the CPU detection code is broken, probably fixed in newer versions.

Bug#227217: mini-howto for the dpi/displaysize setting

2004-01-13 Thread Eduard Bloch
Package: xfree86-common
Version: 4.3.0-0pre1v4
Severity: wishlist
Tags: experimental

As promised on IRC, here is my addition to the X FAQ which describes the
problem and the steps to configure X to have correct DPI value.

Another wish from me is: please create some symlinks in the doc
directories from FAQ.gz to ../xserver-xfree86/FAQ.gz and
../xserver-common/FAQ.gz . Reason: xfree86-common sounds to unnatural
for documentation to be found easiy, don't ask me why. I would NOT find
this FAQ if I would not already know that it exists.

running, is listening on the TCP port, and/or engage in some network
 troubleshooting.

+*) Why do some fonts have weird sizes?
+
+Programs that try to optimise font sizes for better screen output
+(Fontconfig based applications) and those that try to show real-world
+geometry (like inch/centimeter scales in Gimp) need the correct setting
+of the dot resolution. This is the ratio between the display's pixel
+resolution and the physical size of your monitor, mostly something
+between 70 and 120 dpi (dots per inch). If the dot resolution known by
+the X server does not match your resolution/monitor data, modern
+applications will show the fonts with apparently wrong sizes (too small
+or too large), based on wrong expectations of the monitor size. You can
+use the program xdpyinfo (package: xbase-clients) to check the
+assumed monitor size and dot resolution.
+
+The dot resolution setting is handled by the X server internally.
+Unfortunately, there is no good way to auto-detect the monitor size
+so you should configure it by hand. The setting can be specified with:
+
+ - (method 1) the -dpi option for the X command
+ - (method 2) calculated on startup based on the DisplaySize variables
+ in XF86Config-4. See XF86Config-4(5x) for details.
+
+The first method is recommended if you already know the dot resolution
+of your monitor and wish to always run it in the same resolution, and
+the second method is the more flexible way.
+
+To configure, locate and edit the script which starts the X server:
+
+ /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers (for xdm)
+ /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc (for startx (xinit))
+ /etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers (for kdm (kde3))
+ ...
+
+ - For method 1, replace the value after -dpi with the correct number.
+ - For method 2, remove the -dpi word and the following number. Then
+ edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and locate the "Monitor" section there.
+ Add a line like:
+
+ DisplaySize 288 216
+
+ to it. The numbers above are X and Y sizes of the monitor's screen
+ (in milimeters) which you can often find in the monitor's manual.
+
+When done, restart the X server and use xdpyinfo to check the new DPI settings.
+
