Bug#255744: xfree86-common: Mouse not found causes gdm to fail -- this *is* annoying
Package: xfree86-common Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7 Followup-For: Bug #255744 I just want to stress the importance of this bug. It is more than a year old and it still has not been fixed! Take the following scenario: a connector is accidentally removed, or the user removed the mouse for whatever reason. Suddenly, the system no longer starts X! Even though you _can_ work with X without a mouse. I am an experienced user and still I had to spend some time to understand what and why is happening (if you unplug the mouse after the system created the mouse device, everything is fine). An inexperienced user will really be in trouble. Such side-effects are sometimes hard to track. *PLEASE*, do something about that. Exactly such details make Linux/Debian a system not suitable for destkop installations. Yes, we use it nonetheless for teaching. No, it does not work well -- if for any basic problem (like my X does not start anymore! - just because a mouse connector fell off) an experienced system administrator must be bothered. Bug#334704: xfree86 update broke several gnome applets
On Wed, 2005-10-19 at 13:08 +0200, Philippe wrote: since the update of 19/09/2005, when the gnome desktop environment starts, I get these error messages: The Window List applet appears to have died unexpectedly. Do you want to reload this applet? (if you choose not to reload it at this time you can always add it by right clicking on the panel and clicking on the Add to panel submenu) I also have this problem with Workspace switcher and Show Desktop applets. Moreover, it seems that applets load slower than before the update and sometimes I've got a problem with the gnome-terminal applet: I click on it, wait a few seconds with the please wait mouse pointer and nothing, and I can't run the gnome-terminal no more neither by the applet nor by the menu (nor by run a command). Why do you think this is related to xfree86? Problems like this are usually caused by GNOME components. In particular, make sure that there's no stray GNOME background processes from a previous session. -- Earthling Michel Dänzer | Debian (powerpc), X and DRI developer Libre software enthusiast| http://svcs.affero.net/rm.php?r=daenzer

Re: Tentatively dropped component: glide(4)
On Thu, Oct 20, 2005 at 02:46:24AM -0400, Adam Jackson wrote: The glide(4) driver implements 2D support for 3dfx Voodoo1 and Voodoo2 cards using the Glide2 library. As far as I can tell the only platform where it was ever built by default was x86 Debian, and this is probably patched out in current Debian patchsets. Unfortunately it is impossible to build without the glide2 headers installed, and impossible to test without a working build of glide2 (currently unmaintained) and one of the supported cards. As a result no one has written a build system for it yet. If no one contributes a build system for it, there will be no xf86-video-glide module in 7.0. However, these cards will still be supported in 7.0 through the voodoo(4) driver, though with no 3D support. I'm totally fine with dropping it, but let me forward this on to the debian-x mailing list to see if anyone really cares about it. - David Nusinow -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#278724: Info received (was Bug#278724: [nv] system hang when using gv, xmms, or lopster on NV5 [Aladdin TNT2] rev 0x20)
Ennio-Sr wrote: Hi! in my last mesage relating to the captioned bug I wrote (Nov. 24, 2004): -- I'm glad to inform you that changing the Section Screen DefaultDepth from 24 to 16 the problem seems to have disappeared: at least I could run my famous test (i.e. gv foo.txt) many times without locking the system :-) Although I think you could reasonably close the bug, one question remains: I had not set that value to 24 and, if I recall well, when I configured X in old Woody and tried to run it with the wrong value, some 'goblin' would come out from within the X Window System and tell me that depth 24 was not supported by my video card! -- Despite that I did experiment many other hanging-up, but still I had no clue as to what was happening, so I didn't report them. To-day, after my PC froze again, I took different steps which may possibly throw some light on the subject. I had all six consoles opened as follows: F1 - root (idle) F2 - user (idle) F3 - user (idle) F6 - user --start x -- running lopster (on F7) F5 - user --startx -- :1 -- running speedy (on F8) then I opened F4 - user --startx -- :2 -- running mplayer -vo xv -autosync 1 file.mpg (on F9) after half minute watching on F9, the screen (and the PC) froze. I ssh-ed in with my laptop and run top, which showed an XFree86 abosrbing from 60 to 94,6% of CPU! Instead of rebooting (as in past occasions) I killed the above high absorbing XFree86 process and nothing changed; killed .xinitrc running on tty4 (running mplayer on F9, the screen the PC had frozen on) and nothing happened; killed .xinitrc on tty5 (running speedy on F8) and saw a black line across my F9 screen: something had happened! While trying all the CTRL-ALT+F1 through F6 I could see part of the F9 screen progressively full of garbage blacking-out the window ... finally, CTRL-ALT+F7 showed me the window where lopster was running and after that I could re-gain control of my PC! While still having the laptop connected via ssh I tried to reproduce the hanging-up doing again the same steps and watching from top running on the laptop what went on on the PC: the speedy-preloader took almost 45% CPU and about 49% was taken by XFree86 when I launched mplayer ...; after a while (i.e. whan F9 window froze), XFree86 was absorbing up to 96,5% CPU. What I can conclude from my un-technical point of view is that it's the CPU's lack of resources to cause the freezing and wonder whether there could be a sort of pre-warning as to avoid it. Thanks for your attention and for your wonderful work. Regards, Ennio TRY IT!! https://www.scientificlinux.org/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: [tex-live] Re: License of fonts included in X.org sources
Daniel == Daniel Stone [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Right. As I said earlier, it's probably tied up somewhere deep within TOG: no-one still involved with X today remembers this at all. Maybe it is sufficient to find someone at X.org who is willing to care about the legal stuff. It is a great advantage that Thanh found someone at Adobe who remembers. So, unless you really, really, really, really, really, really need these fonts, it's not going to be worth the effort. There are some reasons why it's worth some effort: 1. There are not many free fonts designed by people who know how to design fonts. 2. Utopia is one of very few fonts which can be used to typeset mathematics. Math support for Utopia is distributed with TeXLive, but unfortunately users have to download/install Utopia themselves, which is a bit inconvenient. 3. There are only very few fonts which support Vietnamese. Thanh wants to provide a derived font with Vietnamese glyphs. This, and the fact that math support for Utopia already exists, makes this font very usable for Vietnamese. 4. Utopia is distibuted with X11. Quite interesting for tex4ht (LaTeX-HTML converter) users. 5. Debian people are quite careful about licenses. Hence, it would be good if the Utopia license issue can be resolved. It would be a pity if Utopia will not be distributed with Linux due to some license problems while it is part of any other UNIX derivate. There are some reasons why it's worth some effort: [...] This is another good example of the need for sunset provisions to ensure that intellectual property doesn't become unavailable due to demise and/or lack of interest of the owner. Lacking such provisions, the effort might be used better to extend the virtual font mechanism to allow someone to create a new Type 1 font defining additional or replacement glyphs that will be used in combination with some existing font. This would be sufficiently useful outside the TeX community that I think it stands a good chance of getting broad support. One way to implement this would be to generate a temporary local type 1 font, so the magic would all be hidden in mktfm without the need to change pdfviewers, ghostscript, etc. -- George N. I've done essentially all I plan to do for 6.9 until the next release, be it an RC or the real thing. I think our time is much better spent trying to get the modular packages in order. So yeah, the time for 6.8 is pretty much done and in all honesty I hope the time for 6.9 is the same. I *really* want to ship etch with the modular packages, so to achieve that goal I'm going to focus on those. The modular tree is, of course, totally open to development (as is 6.9) so please feel free to hack on it. I'll be working on the packages tonight so maybe we'll have a few initial ones done soon. - David Nusinow -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? As I said earlier, it's probably tied up somewhere deep within TOG: no-one still involved with X today remembers this at all. Maybe it is sufficient to find someone at X.org who is willing to care about the legal stuff. It is a great advantage that Thanh found someone at Adobe who remembers. We have a couple of people who deal with legal stuff (a lot of the time it's me sitting there going, 'y'know, all rights reserved and nothing else doesn't bear well for us distributing this'), but the problem in this case is the multitude of organisations. It may have been granted to: * the defunct MIT-based X Consortium, * directly to The Open Group, * X.Org as part of TOG, * X.Org Foundation. All the XOF people swear that they haven't heard of it. If it's trapped in XC, then we're stuffed. If it's deep within the annals of TOG, then they don't know about it on a surface inspection, and it would take absolutely ages to find out either way. If it's within TOG-X.Org, then no-one who was around during those days knows about it, so it's likely been lost. See the problem? signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#334950: xserver-xorg: Repeats configuration questions several times during install
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-9 Severity: normal While upgrading X.Org, debconf asks repeatedly the same question (the mouse settings), to finally do nothing. Questions ocurr during preconfiguration, after unpacking, and in postinst, and on the last it ends with the following message: xserver-xorg postinst warning: not updating /etc/X11/xorg.conf; file has been customized (which is also pretty dumb, because this check should be done before asking questions). -- Package-specific info: Contents of /var/lib/xfree86/X.roster: xserver-xorg /etc/X11/X target unchanged from checksum in /var/lib/xfree86/X.md5sum.
