Bug#345497: xserver-xorg: [mga] unresolved symbol in mga_drv.o crashes xserver, leaving the console unusable

2005-12-31 Thread Sebastian Kuhnert
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: important

Hi,

the last update of the xorg packages broke my system. When starting X,
the console blinks briefly and is left blank with a non-blinking cursor
to the upper left. Neither ctrl-alt-f1 nor ctrl-alt-backspace nor chvt 1
work. The xorg.log file (included below) ends far too early and the server
indeed seems to crash. The following lines are from kdm's logfile:

Bug#345387: xlibs-data: same problem here. What now?

2005-12-31 Thread Kenward Vaughan
Package: xlibs-data
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11
Followup-For: Bug #345387

I get the same problem (overwriting ar from another package).

It seems to have disappeared after rerunning apt-get dist-upgrade
2 or 3 times, with a dpkg --configure --pending initially after
the first halt. Weird.

Hi David,

thanks for your prompt reply. IMO the best solution is to move XKB data
files into their own package. Maybe xkbdata is a good candidate for now,
since it looks like this is the component name for X.org 7.0 (do not
hesitate to correct me if I am wrong).

Bug#345480: xserver-xorg: vt switch changes console size to COLSx25

2005-12-31 Thread Adam Borowski
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: normal

I use a console size bigger than 80x25, and when I switch vt to a text
console, the kernel's idea (ie, TIOC{S,G}WINSZ) about the console height
gets set to 25, without touching the width. That is, if you use 100x40,
the size will be set to 100x25. Somehow, if X gets killed and restarted,
everything works ok until the next boot. "stty rows 40" helps until the
next switch to X and back, re-running SVGATextMode helps until the next
boot.

This behavior (working ok after X is killed and then restarted) reminds me
of a past bug which happened only with the nvidia-proprietary driver;
however, in that case it was the video mode was changed instead of the
kernel's idea; re-running SVGATextMode didn't help until after killing X
for the first time.

Here, changing display driver (nvidia, nv) doesn't change anything. I
don't have any other non-headless Debian boxes at hand so I can't check
if this happens on different hardware as well.

Setting BorderColor in /etc/TextConfig will affect lines 26..40, filling
them with the border color.

Bug#345476: xserver-xorg: Logitech MX518 scroll mouse stops working with latest upgrade

2005-12-31 Thread Tom Epperly
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: normal

The scroll wheel on my Logitech MX518 stopped working after I just upgraded
the X11 related files (on Debian unstabled). Yesterday, the scroll wheel
worked fine. Moving the scroll wheel moved window content up and down like
it's supposed to. Now, moving the scroll wheel has no effect.

It's a 10 button mouse, and I have
Option "Buttons" "10"
in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. However, note the log shows

I'm missing something here. When I did the upgrade again, I used aptitude in
visual mode. I selected 'U', then 'g'. After I sent you the email, I tried:

sudo dpkg --audit

but, strangely, there were no packages pending configuration. I then tried:

sudo aptitude upgrade

and many X packages plus xlibs-data were upgraded. Now:

[UPGRADE] xlibs-data 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 -> 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
ii xlibs-data 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 X Window System client data

but the results are even worse: X abends

Uhhm, you're right. What I'd done was:

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade

and left it installing, unattended.

After hitting the problem, I downgraded everything and, after your email,
upgraded again. There was an error unpacking xlibs-data, but I couldn't
capture it: something to do with not being able to unpack a file because it
also belonged to package xlibs. Here's the weird thing:

grep xlibs-data /var/log/aptitude | tail -1

[UPGRADE] xlibs-data 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 -> 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1

dpkg -l xlibs-data

ii xlibs-data 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 X Window System client data

I guess the bug stands then.

Bug#345455: conflicts with nvidia-glx (non-free) forces user to set xserver-xorg on hold, or uninstall it

2005-12-31 Thread Simon Raven
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: normal

it may not seem like a bug at first, but here's why i'm filing it.

6.9.0.dfsg.1-1 conflicts with nvidia-glx <= 1.0.7174-4. which will force
me to do one of a few things.
1) remove xserver-xorg
2) remove nvidia-glx
3) install newer nvidia-glx, but is pointless because i do not have a
new video card, which is why nvidia-glx is on hole in the first place
4) use nv, which is slow and doesn't do 3d accel, and AFAIK doesn't do
2d accel either
5) put xserver-xorg on hold, ganing nothing either

right now, my best option - from my POV - is to keep xserver-xorg at its
current version, keep nvidia-glx on hold too, and either wait on nvidia
to actually support their crap, or suffer through with nv - in the long
term, and i don't expect nvidia to do anything about their older h/w,
them being a corporation and all i'd expect more results from the nv
devs to come through eventually, than expect nvidia to do anything. the
former is far more likely. i'd much rather use nv than nvidia, but nv
doesn't have the accel AFAIK, like i said.

some of us can't afford to "upgrade upgrade upgrade" like they want us
to do, so we can buy more of their crap. hey, maybe we don't want to,
either ;).

anyway, i don't expect anyone to actually give a flying f**k about this.

cheers, and thanks for some good s/w.

sr/

Bug#345436: xlibs: Keyboard not working properly after upgrade to 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1

2005-12-31 Thread Paulo Marcel Coelho Aragao
Package: xlibs
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

After the upgrade to 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1, the keyboard stopped working properly
under X. I've noticed the following:

1. ctrl-alt-fn doesn't switch to other virtual consoles
2. The key with characters '/' and '?' is dead

Not switching to virtual consoles can be lived with, but the lack of '/' and
'?' makes X unusable.

Needless to say, the keyboard works properly on the consoles, and it worked
properly before the upgrade.

Paulo

Bug#345409: New upgrade breaks login as there is no multikey anymore

2005-12-31 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: xlibs
Version: 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1
Severity: important
Tags: sid

The new upgrade of xlibs completely remove all references to
ralt_switch_multikey what is the only way to type in combined characters
and also all german chars.

This stops my users from logging in over xdm or kdm as there are many
characters in there password not available anymore.

This breaks the package heavily. There is no alternative for the
settings below.

For your information, here is the relevant sniplet in my xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Keyboard"
Driver "keyboard"
Option "CoreKeyboard"
Option "XkbRules" "xorg"
Option "XkbModel" "cherrybluec"
Option "XkbLayout" "de"
Option "XkbVariant""nodeadkeys"
Option "XkbOptions""lv3:ralt_switch_multikey"
Option "XkbSymbols"
"pc/pc(pc105)+pc/de(nodeadkeys)+level3(ralt_switch_multikey)+inet(cherrybluec)"
EndSection

So please, if you break the default behavior of X to use shift-ralt as
multikey then just allow the sysadmin to fix this bug by config!!!

Why has xlibs been merged into xlibs-data? In X.org, there are
currently 2 XKB packages, xkbdata and xkeyboard-config, the
latter will replace the former in the future. This transition
will be harder with this merge.

Please note also that some packages depend on XKB data. For instance,
Anton Zinoviev wrote a nice program to use XKB layouts to replace
console layouts. Of course, this program could be useful without X.
If XKB data are shipped in xlibs-data, he will provide his own copy
of XKB files in his package to not depend on a large package, which
is not optimal.
