Bug#478836: whole memory occupied if screensaver interaggreagate is started within compiz
Package: compiz Version: 0.6.3~git20080115.0ea58487-1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Hello, when /usr/lib/xscreensaver/interaggregate was started, the local console with gnome session became unusable. >From a remote ssh session I saw, that all memory (1 GB RAM + 1.4 GB swap) were occupied. Also all of the CPU time were in use (mostly by xorg and compiz.real). So the computer was very busy with swapping and therefore it was difficult and timeconsuming to kill the interaggregate process. On the first view I thought that this is a problem of interaggregate, and reported it as bug #478813. But then I have started interaggreagate to reproduce the problem again. It seems to me that it is related to compiz: If compiz doesn't run, everything is fine. But with compiz there are also other screensavers which cause the problem, e.g. whirlwindwarp. Next point: It doesn't seem to help always to kill the screensaver process, but killing compiz.real leads to a usable system again. Bug#490071: it happend again...
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello, it happened again. This time I tried to close a knotify window. (Maybe I have missed the "OK" Button. But I don't believe that this is it.) Beside the panel-applets, there were only a few programms running within my gnome/compiz session: konsole with aptitude konquerer which opened the knotify window. I attach the output of ps -aux. I still don't see what might triggered the problem. So I will now downgrade xserver-xorg-video-ati Greetings Juergen -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFId7nn5JgLPmj5988RAnPTAKCvl/iUm5UEaaSu8pEoIJdJwWGigACaA5s7 MLEk64ONz9dGQdzHPOWF66I= =fvm6 -END PGP SIGNATURE- USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND root 1 0.0 0.0 10252 748 ?Ss 21:15 0:00 init [2] root 2 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [kthreadd] root 3 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [migration/0] root 4 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [ksoftirqd/0] root 5 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [watchdog/0] root 6 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [events/0] root 7 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [khelper] root40 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [kblockd/0] root43 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [kacpid] root44 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [kacpi_notify] root 150 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [ksuspend_usbd] root 156 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [khubd] root 159 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [kseriod] root 199 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S21:15 0:00 [pdflush] root 200 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S21:15 0:00 [pdflush] root 201 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [kswapd0] root 202 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [aio/0] root 752 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [ata/0] root 754 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [ata_aux] root 784 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [scsi_eh_0] root 785 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [usb-storage] root 807 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [scsi_eh_1] root 810 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [scsi_eh_2] root 855 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [scsi_eh_3] root 856 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [scsi_eh_4] root 937 0.0 0.0 0 0 ?S< 21:15 0:00 [kjournald] root 1017 0.0 0.1 17804 2048 ?S juergen 5225 0.0 0.7 125264 8136 ?S21:27 0:00 kio_settings [kdeinit] a juergen 5227 0.0 0.7 125116 7416 ?S21:27 0:00 kio_media [kdeinit] medi juergen 5228 0.0 0.7 125000 7416 ?S21:27 0:00 kio_settings [kdeinit] s juergen 5231 0.0 1.3 154016 13864 ?S21:27 0:00 kio_uiserver [kdeinit] juergen 5235 0.0 0.2 91920 2244 ?S21:28 0:00 /usr/bin/kdesud root 6005 0.0 0.2 63536 2840 ?Ss 21:31 0:00 sshd: juergen [priv] juergen 6008 0.0 0.1 63664 1796 ?S21:31 0:00 sshd: [EMAIL PROTECTED]/1 juergen 6010 0.0 0.2 23756 2132 pts/1Ss 21:31 0:00 -bash root 6019 0.0 0.1 36952 1304 pts/1S21:32 0:00 su root 6020 0.0 0.1 23252 1848 pts/1R21:32 0:00 bash root 6027 0.0 0.1 18408 1040 pts/1R+ 21:34 0:00 ps -aux
Bug#490071: update xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:6.6.3-2 -> 1:6.9.0-1
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello, a few days ago I had downgraded xserver-xorg-video-ati to 1:6.6.3-2 which also caused a downgrade of nearly all other xorg packages to the versions of stable. This also disabled the gl stuff and compiz. During this time I haven't seen any crash of xorg. (Which of course proves nothing.) Yesterday I had updated xserver-xorg-video-ati to 1:6.9.0-1 and the other packeges also to the versions of testing. So the gl stuff and compiz is working again. With this versions I have seen yesterday and today those crashes of xorg, were xorg take 98% CPU time. (But the last time the mouse pointer was still moveable and only the keyboard was gone and all X11 applications were frozen.) It is still dificult to say, if the problem is located in xorg, xserver-xorg-video-ati, the gl stuff or compiz.
