Bug#363680: xserver-xorg-core: default nice value makes xorg behave nasty.
Package: xserver-xorg-core Version: 1:1.0.2-4 Severity: normal since i've upgraded my sid to xorg (not the transition to 7.0, the first move yet) my system was slow, xmms would stop while changing virtual desktops, firefox rendering pages with shades (bb4.org/hobbitmon.sf.net) would make the system allmost unusable. playing arround with the nice values of the browser, xmms (putting the browser to 15, xmms to -12) wouldn't do any better. _but_ changing the xserver from the package default of -10 to -1 would make the system run smooth with firefox and xmms running on 0 nice. As most of the kernel processes run with nice -5 i doubt that it makes sense to sugest users to give their x-server a higher prio than that. the default for that should be in the range of -1 through -4, -10 is counter productive, not to say evil, because of it renders the system disresponsive. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.15 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Versions of packages xserver-xorg-core depends on: ii libc6 2.3.6-7GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libfontenc1 1:1.0.1-3 X11 font encoding library ii libgcc1 1:4.1.0-1 GCC support library ii libxau6 1:1.0.0-2 X11 authorisation library ii libxdmcp6 1:1.0.0-3 X11 Display Manager Control Protoc ii libxfont1 1:1.0.0-3 X11 font rasterisation library ii x11-common1:7.0.12 X Window System (X.Org) infrastruc ii xserver-xorg-input-al 1:7.0.12 the X.Org X server -- input driver ii xserver-xorg-input-ev 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- evdev input driv ii xserver-xorg-input-kb 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- keyboard input d ii xserver-xorg-input-mo 1:1.0.4-2 X.Org X server -- mouse input driv ii xserver-xorg-video-al 1:7.0.12 the X.Org X server -- output drive ii xserver-xorg-video-ap 1:1.0.1.5-2X.Org X server -- APM display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ar 1:0.5.0.5-2X.Org X server -- ark display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-at 1:6.5.7.3-3X.Org X server -- ATI display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ch 1:1.0.1.3-3X.Org X server -- Chips display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-ci 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Cirrus display d ii xserver-xorg-video-cy 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Cyrix display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-du 1:0.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- dummy display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-fb 1:0.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- fbdev display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-gl 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- Glint display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-i1 1:1.1.0.5-2X.Org X server -- i128 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i7 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- i740 display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-i8 1:1.5.1.0-2X.Org X server -- Intel i8xx, i9xx ii xserver-xorg-video-im 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- IMSTT display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-mg 1:1.2.1.3.dfsg.1-2 X.Org X server -- MGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-ne 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Neomagic display ii xserver-xorg-video-ne 1:0.1.4.1-3X.Org X server -- Newport display ii xserver-xorg-video-ns 1:2.7.6.5-2X.Org X server -- NSC display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-nv 1:1.0.1.5-2X.Org X server -- NV display drive ii xserver-xorg-video-re 1:4.0.1.3.dfsg.1-2 X.Org X server -- Rendition displa ii xserver-xorg-video-s3 1:1.8.6.5-2X.Org X server -- S3 ViRGE display ii xserver-xorg-video-sa 1:2.0.2.3-4X.Org X server -- Savage display d ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:1.3.1.5-3X.Org X server -- SiliconMotion di ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:0.8.1.3-2X.Org X server -- SiS display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-si 1:0.7.1.3-2X.Org X server -- SiS USB display ii xserver-xorg-video-td 1:1.1.1.3-3X.Org X server -- tdfx display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-tg 1:1.0.0.5-3X.Org X server -- TGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-tr 1:1.0.1.2-2X.Org X server -- Trident display ii xserver-xorg-video-ts 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Tseng display dr ii xserver-xorg-video-ve 1:1.0.1.3-2X.Org X server -- VESA display dri ii xserver-xorg-video-vg 1:4.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- VGA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-vi 1:0.1.33.2-2 X.Org X server -- VIA display driv ii xserver-xorg-video-vm 1:10.11.1.3-2 X.Org X server -- VMware display d ii xserver-xorg-video-vo 1:1.0.0.5-2X.Org X server -- Voodoo display d ii zlib1g1:1.2.3-11 compression library - runtime Versions of packages xserver-xorg-core recommends: pn xkeyboard-config none (no description available) -- no debconf information -- To

* The driver selection dialog is missing Radeon, though -rw-r--r--1 root root 127544 Aug 18 21:42 /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o exist, and belongs to dpkg -S /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o xserver-xfree86: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o * The list of available display modes lacks the New W-XGA modes of dell Notebooks (i.e. 1680x1050) (pherhaps an add own one selector would be ok?) * The ability to configure a Second mouse would be apreciatable, as many notebooks have internal ps/2 mouses, and one wants to hook up an usb mouse, which would end up in having two devices (/dev/misc/psaux; /dev/input/mice) to collect mousing stuff from... (I think I should have a closer look to that) * The ability of adding card specific driver stuff would allso be nice, for all the cards supporting TV out, Hardware mousecursoroptions etc. (I might have a closer look at this too...) I've noticed the bug since XFree-4.1 is in woody. using the ati-module from the XFree-4.0 packages worked it out for some time, but after the last XFree-uptate it became even worse with the last X-Server update. So I've tracked it down to the WMCPU applet as I reported. And: no, it doesn't need a WindowMaker to be running to crash the server, but it might need some libs (the libdockap afaik) Willi -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Xfree 4.1 setup tool...
Hey guys. I know it's not your making, but today I tried to use the xf86cfg tool, It's the worst piece of configuration tool I've ever seen. If no mouse is found, it renders unusual at all. The old XF86Setup tool wasn't very polite to use with keyboard, but it was after all! The system was a fresh installed (without X) stable, which we upgraded to testing. (because off packagedependencies did stop us from having fonts and X-Servers at once, verry strange..) Well, now gpm was installed and running, we could move the mouse-cursor on the console with the touch-pad. the forwarding was enabled in microsoft mode. There was an almost working /etc/X11/XF86Config for the Xfree 3* from stable left. The xf86cfg started the x-server, but no mouse was detected correctly. It tried /dev/mouse, which was a symbolic link to /dev/gpmdata, which, as you might know by yourself, was a fifo gpm was writing to. After sereval tries of using the cursor-keys to get the mouse working, we gave up and copied the XF86Config-4 from my notebook, which worked allmost instantly :-) xf86cfg is pain in the aass!!! The XFREE-Packages I have now installed have the Version-Tags: ii xserver-common 4.1.0-6files and utilities common to all X servers ii xserver-xfree8 4.1.0-6the XFree86 X server The previous ones were: xserver-xfree86_4.0.3-4_i386.deb I'll put more about my machine in the first appendix, The stuff gdb told me about the crash in the second one. After i swapped the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/ati* with the ones from the xfree4.0.3 package, the system ran stable again. If I can provide you more information, please tell me how. If there's a way to make gdb more informative, please send me binaries. (is there a monolitic way for XFree 4?)
