Excellent! Thank you for following up. I suspect what should be done instead is: 1) The kernel, or hotplug, or some non-XFree86 package, should automatically run "afbinit /dev/fd0" at boot time. This issue I leave to debian-sparc to debate. 2) The XFree86 X server should be improved to: A) at best, detect that the firmware isn't loaded and issue an error message about this so there is something intelligible in the log other than the unresolved symbols garbage; or B) at worst, always warn all sunffb users about the fact that Elite3D, among possibly other Sun video hardware, needs to be initialized with afbinit first I can write a patch for the latter. I can't do the former without assistance. If someone could help me with a function call or two to ask the hardware if its firmware is loaded (if that is even possible), that would be most appreciated. It's minus the one that wouldn't compile. The other one is part of the package version the submitter is using: * Apply patch by David S. Miller to implement support for RGB->BGR colorspace conversion in the X server's fb layer. - debian/patches/072_Xserver_fb_convert_RGB_to_BGR.diff A few weeks ago, I asked for an updated version of the other patch: * Apply patch by David S. Miller to implement XAA and Render support in the sunffb driver. - debian/patches/073_sunffb_xaa_render_fb_support.diff If you could get a version to me that will build I'd be happy to apply it. However, the missing symbols that are being complained have to do with DRI and drm, not XAA or Render. -- G. Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.3.0-7 Severity: important Tags: sid As I stated in the subject, the xserver starts I can see the gray screen for a moment, but then it dies. After reading Branden's mail abount sunffb and dri problems I disabled all modules. No change. Apparently there are some symbols missing. btw. this is a sparc64-arch. I also tried to 'startx' in a 32-bit environment by 'sparc32 /bin/bash' but nothing changed.
