Bug#359328: Change screen resolution disables DRI
Hi again... I try to use some openGL applications in my intel 915gm that uses dri at lower resolutions (ex. 1024x768, 800x600). I installed the mesa-experimental packages, and I have an update kernel 2.6.17. When I changed my resolution from 1280x800 to a lower resolution, dri stops working. export LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose; glxgears output -- libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 1.6.0 i915 (screen 0) libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci::00:02.0 drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 drmOpenDevice: open result is 4, (OK) drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 4 drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci::00:02.0 libGL error: drmMap of framebuffer failed (Invalid argument) libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering But, when I come back from the max resolution dri works again. Bug#359328: xserver-xorg-video-i810: Bug also confirmed here
Package: xserver-xorg-video-i810 Version: 1:1.5.1.0-2 Followup-For: Bug #359328 I confirm this bug also happens to me. I am running debian testing (etch) on an HP Pavilion ze4944ea (Intel Centrino 1.4Ghz), with 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device. I realized this bug happened because the stellarium application ran very slowly (after upgrading this package): fps < 1 as indicated by the application's UI. In order to solve my problem I have followed these steps: 1. I have upgraded my kernel from 2.6.15-1-686 (debian testing) to 2.6.17.6: A "cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep dri" command reported that a higher version of kernel modules was required. 2. I replaced the i810_drv.so and i915_dri.so files (in their corresponding locations under /usr/lib/) in my system with those from http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/i915-20060403-linux.i386.tar.bz2 as described above. Now I have direct rendering, and the stellarium application reports about 25fps in its UI. However I also get the warnings when running "LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo": libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 1.5.1 i915 (screen 0) libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci::00:02.0 drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 drmOpenDevice: open result is 4, (OK) drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 4 drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci::00:02.0 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x25 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x27 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x29 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2b libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2d libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2f libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x31 libGL error: Can't open configuration file /etc/drirc: No such file or directory. libGL error: Can't open configuration file /home/daniel/.drirc: No such file or directory. name of display: :0.0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes server glx vendor string: SGI server glx version string: 1.2 server glx extensions: GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context, GLX_OML_swap_method, GLX_SGI_make_current_read, GLX_SGIS_multisample, GLX_SGIX_hyperpipe, GLX_SGIX_swap_barrier, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig client glx vendor string: SGI client glx version string: 1.4 client glx extensions: GLX_ARB_get_proc_address, GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_EXT_import_context, GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_MESA_allocate_memory, GLX_MESA_swap_control, GLX_MESA_swap_frame_usage, GLX_OML_swap_method, GLX_OML_sync_control, GLX_SGI_make_current_read, GLX_SGI_swap_control, GLX_SGI_video_sync, GLX_SGIS_multisample, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig, GLX_SGIX_pbuffer, GLX_SGIX_visual_select_group GLX version: 1.2 GLX extensions: GLX_ARB_get_proc_address, GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_EXT_import_context, GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_MESA_allocate_memory, GLX_MESA_swap_control, GLX_MESA_swap_frame_usage, GLX_OML_swap_method, GLX_SGI_make_current_read, GLX_SGI_video_sync, GLX_SGIS_multisample, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 852GM/855GM 20050225 x86/MMX/SSE2 OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 6.5 OpenGL extensions: GL_ARB_imaging, GL_ARB_multisample, GL_ARB_multitexture, GL_ARB_point_parameters, GL_ARB_texture_border_clamp, GL_ARB_texture_compression, GL_ARB_texture_cube_map, GL_ARB_texture_env_add, GL_ARB_texture_env_combine, GL_ARB_texture_env_crossbar, GL_ARB_texture_env_dot3, GL_ARB_texture_mirrored_repeat, GL_ARB_texture_rectangle, GL_ARB_transpose_matrix, GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object, GL_ARB_vertex_program, GL_ARB_window_pos, GL_EXT_abgr, GL_EXT_bgra, GL_EXT_blend_color, GL_EXT_blend_equation_separate, GL_EXT_blend_func_separate, GL_EXT_blend_minmax, GL_EXT_blend_subtract, GL_EXT_clip_volume_hint, GL_EXT_cull_vertex, GL_EXT_compiled_vertex_array, GL_EXT_convolution, GL_EXT_copy_texture, GL_EXT_draw_range_elements, GL_EXT_fog_coord, GL_EXT_histogram, GL_EXT_multi_draw_arrays, GL_EXT_packed_pixels, GL_EXT_point_parameters, GL_EXT_polygon_offset, GL_EXT_rescale_normal, GL_EXT_secondary_color, GL_EXT_separate_specular_color, GL_EXT_stencil_wrap, GL_EXT_subtexture, GL_EXT_texture, GL_EXT_texture3D, GL_EXT_texture_edge_clamp, GL_EXT_texture_env_add, GL_EXT_texture_env_combine, GL_EXT_texture_env_dot3, GL_EXT_texture_filter_anisotropic, GL_EXT_texture_lod_bias, GL_EXT_texture_object, GL_EXT_texture_rectangle, GL_EXT_vertex_array, GL_3DFX_texture_compression_FXT1, GL_APPLE_client_storage, GL_APPLE_packed_pixels, GL_ATI_blend_eq

That said, there were some performance regressions when rotation support was added that have only been fixed recently in CVS. Not sure that the fixes are in the experimental packages yet. > I personally don't need dri, but this and other problems reported here may > suggest that more caution is needed when patching debian xorg packages. Bug#359328: direct rendering performance drop after 6.9.0 -> 7.0 upgrade
I can also report that the package xserver-xorg-video-i810 is incompatible with DRI kernel modules and mesa packages in testing. I have i910 chipset, and I run a clean etch system. After the X upgrade 6.9.0 -> 7.0 the direct rendering was gone. In order to make it work again I had to install 2.6.16 kernel from unstable and 6.5 Mesa packages from experimental. That restored direct rendering, however it seems that performance is much worse than before the upgrade. glxgears would report around 700 fps for the 7.0 version compared to 1100 fps for 6.9.0. Also the cpu load is now about 70% when running glxgears as opposed to less than 10% before the upgrade. Please let me know if there is a more specific information about this that could be useful for fixing this problem and that I could provide. I personally don't need dri, but this and other problems reported here may suggest that more caution is needed when patching debian xorg packages. Hopefully these problems will be fixed when 7.1 version is uploaded. As somebody who is using Debian both at home and at work, I'd also like to thank all developers who made modular xorg packages available in testing. It's been tremendous amount of work. Hi there, I have the same issue on my D610. DRI fails to initialize. Are we using an snapshot? I thought the problem was caused by us patching a 7.0 Xserver with newer sources. We need a newer Mesa. My problem with that solution is what happens with drivers which are currently working? Do they break? The 6.5 build I've playing with locally does in fact work with the current server in unstable, but the 6.4.2 build doesn't (i915). Bug#359328: More info
Hi, I met the same problem, and after substituting i915_dri.so with the snapshot from freedesktop.org, there existed problems with some applications yet. when running ppracer and some other apps, it keeps blinking and looks like it cannot synchronize. However, for `neverball', it can stop blinking if I turn off the reflection, and I do not know what is ``reflection'' and how it works, anyway, it works. glxgears also works and with the missing visual mode error just as other 3D apps. Bug#359328: i810/i915 still missing something
I've upgraded i915_dri.so to http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/i915-20060403-linux.i386.tar.bz2, upgraded libshadow.so and libi180_drv.so to Alan Hourihane's latest at http://www.fairlite.demon.co.uk/intel.html (being i810 1.6.13). I'm running Linux 2.6.16. Apparently there are yet more hoops to jump through. GLX is still not working . Before upgrading i915_dri.so I was getting "ERROR! sizeof(I830DRIRec) does not match passed size from device driver", with direct rendering: No. Now with the upgraded i915_dri.so I do have direct rendering: Yes, but with the error: $ LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo name of display: :0.0 libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 1.6.13 i915 (screen 0) libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci::00:02.0 drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 drmOpenDevice: open result is 4, (OK) drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 4 drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci::00:02.0 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x23 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x25 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x27 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x29 libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2b libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2d libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x2f libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x31 libGL error: Can't open configuration file /etc/drirc: No such file or directory. libGL error: Can't open configuration file /home/drew/.drirc: No such file or directory. display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes server glx vendor string: SGI server glx version string: 1.2 So the next problem is these 0xNN visuals not supported, and some missing /etc/drirc. Bug#359328: xserver-xorg-video-i810: dri doesn't work (maybe because of kernel 2.6.16?)
Package: xserver-xorg-video-i810 Version: 1:1.5.1.0-1 Severity: normal hello, I have hp omnibook XE3 with this card :00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82830 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 04) I have recently upgraded xorg to version 7 (and kernel 2.6.16 vanilla)(xorg.conf is freshly generated with dpkg-recofigure xserver-xorg) and today, i noticed that dri is not working. LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo outputs this message libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 1.5.1 i915 (screen 0) libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci::00:02.0 drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0 drmOpenDevice: open result is 6, (OK) drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 6 drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci::00:02.0 ERROR! sizeof(I830DRIRec) does not match passed size from device driver libGL warning: 3D driver returned no fbconfigs. libGL error: InitDriver failed libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering name of display: :0.0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: No server glx vendor string: SGI server glx version string: 1.2 server glx extensions: and so on ... after little searching, it seems, that there is some mishmash between some files in xorg, mesa and kernel (or so, i don't understand it much) So i downloaded http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/i915-20060325-linux.i386.tar.bz2 compiled new kernel modules ... it didn't help. So i overwrited /usr/lib/dri/i915_dri.so from libgl1-mesa-dri and /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/i810_drv.so from xserver-xorg-video-i810 with those precompiled files from tarball and dri acceleration seems to work (it works even after moving back original kernel modules).
