RE: [Declude.JunkMail] OSSOFT

2001-08-22 Thread Don Brown

Andy,

There is little Declude docu about "bounce." Is the name of the template
"bounce" and is it only sent to the sender or . . . .

Thanks,

Don,

a) no - there is no variable for the URL. It's hard-coded.

b) no - Imail doesn't get to deliver the mail to a local mailbox until AFTER
Declude has already bounced/alerted - causing the loop we are talking about.

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] OSSOFT

2001-08-22 Thread Don Brown

For "more information" in your template, do you have osirusoft hard coded
or are you using a variable for it? If a variable, which one?

Also, regarding the reply address of "Postmaster.ArgosWeb.net," I know you
are using this to prevent return bounces, etc. However, it could be
deleted inbound since it is an invalid address. So, wouldn't it be better
to have a valid return (i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED]) and use an Imail
filter to send the returns to NUL? That's assuming the Imail filters are
applied before Declude takes over -- they are applied first, correct Scott?

Thanks,

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] OSSOFT

2001-08-22 Thread Andy Schmidt

Hi Travis,

oh - so you don't actually mean "OSSOFT" - you are talking about OsiruSoft
in GENERAL and ONE of their OTHER databases?

Yes, other databases have a lot of false positives. Here are the OTHER
settings I use:

OSRELAY WARN
# OSSRC = false positives GTE/Verizon
OSSRC WARN
OSSMART WARN
OSLIST WARN
OSFORM WARN

I addressed the bouncing loop by sending the mail FROM an invalid email
address - and including a VALID contact email address in the body of the
email. You saw that in the template I just posted before.

But, OSSOFT does have one database that has then entire UUNET address block
in their database. UUNET has a lot of dial up POPs and this will bounce
legitimate emails. I have found that getting off some of these lists are
quite impossible. We had one issue of hosting a known spammer on one of our
virtual hosting servers, once we found out, we nuked the account, but we are
still listed in OSSOFT's blacklist. Case in point, we run a very tight TOS
and monitor our [EMAIL PROTECTED] daily, but yet we have landed in a black
hole. I at least try to contact an ISP before sending them into the black
hole.

Also, have you found a work around for the bouncing loop you had the other
day?

Travis

RE: [Declude.JunkMail] OSSOFT

2001-08-22 Thread Andy Schmidt

Thanks for the heads up. I checked yesterday's log, and every single
message flagged by OSSOFT was clearly spam. So far, none of my customers
have complained about me "BOUNCING" it.

Before we had the BOUNCE and ALERT features, I was very conservative and
found RBL and DUL to be suitable for "HOLD". Now, that declude sends a
notification to the occasional (if every) legitimate sender, I have been
rather aggressive - without a single user complaint so far:

RBL BOUNCE
DUL BOUNCE
RSS BOUNCE
ORDBBOUNCE
OSDUL BOUNCE
OSSOFT BOUNCE
BADHEADERS BOUNCE
REVDNS ALERT

I use the following bounce template:

- template ---
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: %MAILFROM%
Subject: Undelivered Mail

Argos Networks' Firewall has rejected a message sent by %MAILFROM% to:

  %ALLRECIPS%.

Your message originated at a mail server, which is listed as a source of
unsolicited email ("SPAM"). In case your message was legitimate, we are
including technical information that will assist your ISP with addressing
their problem.

  Mail Server: %REMOTEIP% [%REMOTEHOST%]
  Listed in: %TESTDOMAIN%
  Description: %TESTNAME% (%WARNING%)
  More Info: http://relays.osirusoft.com/

  Message ID:%MSGID%
  Queue ID: %QUEUENAME% on %RECIPHOST%

In the meantime, you may want to resend your message after connecting
through a different Internet provider.

We apologize for your inconvenience, but resources and productivity lost to
unsolicited email messages require us to block known sources of such emails.

For security reasons, you cannot respond to this email directly. If you
need to contact us, please compose a new message addressed to

I highly advise everyone not to use OSSOFT for the holding or deleting of
messages. For one, they use several databases that aren't managed very
well. One example is this one:

xbl.selwerd.cx

They have the entire UU.NET network in their black list. That is almost as
bad as black listing AOL.com or yahoo.com.

With this said, does anyone know of any other tests that should not be ran?
