[Bug 54602] quote filename on dnd
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal In gnome-terminal, for anyone who does not already use this feature, when a user drags something into a terminal window, the URI is copied into the terminal. Local filenames are even converted from full "file://" URIs to simple path names. This is a really cool feature. However, many filenames in the wild have evil characters such as !#&*()[]{}"'`<>,; and whitespace. If, for example, you were to download a .torrent from mininova.org, and then type 'azureus ' into the terminal and try to drag and drop the filename, bash would complain about the characters in that filename. The solution is to escape those characters before inserting the filename. I wrote a patch for this, which has been accepted into the upstream cvs- head. However, this patch can just as easily be applied to the current ubuntu package, while simply packaging the modified upstream would require a library change. The relevant upstream bug is #85926. ** Affects: gnome-terminal (upstream) Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed ** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #85926 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85926 ** Also affects: gnome-terminal (upstream) via http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=85926 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- quote filename on dnd https://launchpad.net/bugs/54602 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 51242] Re: [Bug 51242] Re: New windows shouldn't steal focus
Agreed. I personally have typed part of my password into the wrong application window when it popped up and stole focus. Didn't end up accidentally sending the password to someone else, fortunately, but in principle it could have happened. Personally I like the idea of making this a user-adjustable setting, but I'd prefer making "strict" be the default. [Bug 51242] Re: New windows shouldn't steal focus
Having a key in gconf is nice, but it doesn't change the fact that automatically giving focus to a new window (by default!) constitutes not only a security issue (typing a passwd in the wrong window), but a potential for data loss (typing "rm -rf *" in the wrong terminal). Maybe I should file it under "security" so it gets some attention. The security issue is very real and probably wouldn't be that hard to exploit remotely. Consider Alice logging on to Bob's server with ssh. Malicious user Mallory is already logged on the server and detects the attempt (seeing sshd starting with ps) and automatically sends an IM message to Alice ("Hi Alice, how are you?"). There is a non-zero probability that Alice will not see the IM window open and accidently type his/her password right into Mallory's IM window, giving away her password. -- New windows shouldn't steal focus https://launchpad.net/bugs/51242 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 51242] Re: New windows shouldn't steal focus
This message indicates that the focus behavior for new windows should be controlled by the setting of a gconf key called /apps/metacity/general/focus_new_windows: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/dapper-changes/2006-April/009538.html According to the above, if one issues the command gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/focus_new_windows --type string strict then new windows won't get focus unless they appear under the mouse pointer. The long description in gconf is "This option provides additional control over how newly created windows get focus. It has two possible values; "smart" applies the user's normal focus mode, and "strict" results in windows started from a terminal not being given focus." However, on my system (Dapper, with focus_mode set to "mouse") newly- created windows always get the focus even when focus_new_windows is set to "strict"). For example, typing 'xterm' in a gnome-terminal causes an xterm to pop up, and the focus goes to the new xterm even though the mouse pointer is at the original gnome-terminal. -- New windows shouldn't steal focus https://launchpad.net/bugs/51242 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 47602] Re: gnome panels are empty (show nothing) after login
Positive I did not "simply remove menubar applet". Both the top and bottom panels are empty, void, devoid of all life and 100% non- responsive -- just a gray pair of gray bars, until I right-click desktop to open a gnome-terminal (via nautilus-open-terminal) and exec "killall gnome-panel". It seems that gnome-panel initializes correctly on all but the first time within my gnome session. Of course, the first time is the most important as the 2nd ... nth times should never be needed. [Bug 54577] Window list in bottom panel resizes arbitrarily
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: metacity When opening and/or closing windows the window list in the bottom panel resizes its entries all the time. This is very confusing for the user. It is especially annoying when the title of the window changes. This happens in Firefox (browsing the net to other sites), Thunderbird (selecting a different mailbox), Rhythmbox (a new song is played), Terminal (a different directory is entered), etc. Sometimes these changes happen automatically (e.g. new song in Rhythmbox starts). It is very frustrating when it happens while one wants to select an application - and the button for the application moves away. It is not a space issue either, since - in my case - half the bottom panel is empty anyway. Also, there seems to be no logic in the size of the buttons either. It would be nice if there was a more consistent logic to calculating the width of the entries in the window list. ** Affects: metacity (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Window list in bottom panel resizes arbitrarily https://launchpad.net/bugs/54577 -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 28326] Re: i810 Xv crashes after suspend -> infinite resprawn
I've just ran hard into this bug. The machine exhibiting the problem is a Dell Latitude D505 with an 855GM chip. It may be of interest to note that I've only encountered this once, and that was _after_ installing 2.6.15-26-686 and the corresponding modules, so I hadn't seen it on the 386 flavored kernel. The kernel is not tainted BTW. More importantly, I *hadn't* put the system into sleep when this happened. It was triggered through MPlayer, trying to get a movie with the XV backend go into fullscreen. The result was a constantly respawning gdm. I did manage to reboot the system gracefully through an SSH login. Still, I plan on using 6.06 for a long time (I used Warty satisfactorily on this same machine until it was EOL'ed and Breezy came out!), and it would be quite bad if the X system would go down randomly when something uses XV, rendering the for me fantastic 3 year desktop support useless :(. Anyway, here's the relevant part of the X.org.log file. It's not the original log of the server when it crashed, as it was scribbled over a few times by a continuously respawning GDM.
