[Bug 61986] tango icon set

2006-09-23 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

A Tango Gaim theme, which fits perfectly with the Human theme, is
avaliable here:

http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29142704/

Edgy should have this theme isntalled by default to create a more
consistent desktop.

I love Edgy's further usage of Tango icons wherever appropriate, and
Gaim should not be left out in the wonderful creation of a more
attractive and usable desktop

Note how the notification area icon is replaced with an icon of chat
bubbles, which clearly indicates to the user that it is a
chat/IM/conversation program unlike the ambiguous Gaim icon .

[Bug 61986] Re: tango icon set

2006-09-23 Thread Richard Laager
Regarding the first, it's very important that you not replace the about
box logo with something that says GAIM. The program is always to be
referred to as Gaim or gaim, as outlined in the FAQ.

Gaim 2.0.0 has a number of icons from lokheed's previous icon theme.

Regarding the specific icons...

The Gaim developers are split on the clock vs. notepad icon for away.

I don't think it's a good idea to replace the generic Jabber icon with
an icon clearly based on the Google Talk icon.

The Yahoo icon is even less recognizable than the current one we have in
Gaim.

I don't like the replacement of the Gaim dude icons wholesale. The
status ones incorporate the icon for a web browser, which is really
confusing. The dialog ones are nice, but the Gaim Cool icon has been
replaced with something that indicates a clear lack of understanding
about what that icon is used for.

I really with the creator of these icons would've brought them to us for
inclusion upstream, but he didn't. I found a previous version from a
user's suggestion. As I mentioned, I included many of them upstream.
However, the creator of those icons wasn't willing to work with us on
changing some icons to meet the developers' requirements. To be fair, I
rejected some of them right away without providing reasons (which I
intended on getting to later) which set a bad tone.

I could detail more issues, which are not as critical, but it's really
late here...

Regarding the second set... I like some of those better, but I'm not
going to detail it.

All in all, if you feel there are specific icons in these themes that
are better than those in Gaim 2.0.0 now, I'd be willing to look at
including them upstream, which seems like a far better thing for
everyone involved. I'd really rather not see Ubuntu with different icons
(unless their entire desktop theme were to vary a lot from the
respective upstream projects). It increases the support costs on both
sides, and deprives Gaim users on other distros of nicer icons.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 17294 ***

And these are the icons:

http://ramnet.se/~nisse/diverse/temp/tango/okncancel.tar.gz

Surely the proposed red cross's metaphor is not different from the
current, ugly red cross? I don't think the proposed green tick's

So, why give the user ugly button icons when they could have ones that
are basically the same, only they look good instead of crappy?

[Bug 61986] Re: tango icon set

2006-09-23 Thread David Prieto
Hi richard, and thanks for your reply. I'm afraid I can't give a
solution to many of the issues you're raising, but others shoulb be
easily fixable.

it's very important that you not replace the about box logo with
something that says GAIM.

Copying the current logo.png to the new iconset folder would do the
job... I'm not sure if we would have to ask the creator for permission
to modiffy the theme, though.

I don't think it's a good idea to replace the generic Jabber icon with
an icon clearly based on the Google Talk icon.

That caught my eye, too. There's an icon called jabber_bak wich could be
renamed to jabber, much more generic.

The Yahoo icon is even less recognizable than the current one we have
in Gaim.

I have to disagree here, I did find it recognizable.

The status ones incorporate the icon for a web browser, which is really
confusing.

You're right. The status icons should be able to be replaced by dialog
ones, they're actually visible when you browse your recent status,
watch:

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/7136/1hh1.jpg

I don't know how to replace them, though.

the Gaim Cool icon has been replaced with something that indicates a
clear lack of understanding about what that icon is used for.

I'm not even sure what the Gaim Cool icon exactly is, so I might not be
the right person to discuss that.

Regarding the second set... I like some of those better, but I'm not
going to detail it.

Both sets seem to go well with each other, would it be possible to take
the ones you like from the second and the right ones from the first and
create a hybrid set?

They don't go well with Gaim's current set tho, thay're much crispier
and it wouldn't be a good mix IMO.

[Bug 61786] Re: [Feature request] 'Create folder in here' type option for nautilus

2006-09-23 Thread mmnz
say if the parent folder that you are browsing is /home/bob/.

Bear in mind that you are browsing in list view.

If you expand a folder, say 'pictures' within /home/bob/, in this case,
for all intents and purposes you are browsing 'pictures'.

However nautilus rightly thinks you are still in /home/bob/, so if you
go file create folder, a new folder is created in /home/bob/ rather
than 'pictures'.

So adding another option to the right-click menu, similar to the effect
of 'paste into folder', but with the functionality to create a folder
within a folder, would make sense in this case, and improve usability.

I hope my explanation is clear, though i doubt it.

Your problem might be fixed in Edgy.

Could you please download the Desktop CD of Edgy Knot 3 (from

another mirror), boot from it and look if the problem still persists?

[Bug 61966] Re: Usability: cannot change volume names

2006-09-23 Thread Alessandro Gervaso
I think that the label can be written only if the user has the permission to
write directly on the block device and this isn't done by default.
If with rw access to the drive you mean rw access to the mountpoint I think
it is the cause of the problem.

[Bug 61966] Re: Usability: cannot change volume names

2006-09-23 Thread Alessandro Gervaso
Sorry for the double post.
I think that the correct beahviour should be this:

1) the user plugs an external drive;
2) hal should change the block device ownership to the current console user, in
order to allow it to edit the partitions, format the drive etc...
3) the drive gets mounted
4) nautilus should have a wrapper to e2label and something similar to write
on vfat partitions.

[Bug 62031] GDM sometimes does not start correct on XDMCP remote session

2006-09-23 Thread Hans-Werner Dietz
Public bug reported:

I am using dapper with Gnome and want to do remote logon with XDMCP from
a Windows PC by using XMING and this doesnt work everytime.

After a local logon on the dapper machine everything is fine.
Then remote logon via XDMCP also works. Get a warning that I am already logged
in and everything is fine.

Without local logon on the dapper machine the remote logon fails (partially).
Graphical logon and password worked, but the result of the logon is an empty
brown background in XMING without nautilus.
When I login via putty and SSH and call ps -e I can see a GDM but no
nautilus.

This happens with dapper 6.06 DVD version. I also make an update to last
version via internet last week, so I thing now I have 6.06.01. The
problem stay.

For setup of remote login I used the graphical gdmsetup (remote...-same as
local)
I crosschecked the gdm.conf... everything is like I expected but only works
with remote XDMCP session if I make a local logon before.

Found some blogs of people who get this brown sreens also with
connection from CYGWIN to dapper. So maybe it is reproduceble with
CYGWIN and WMING.

[Bug 61706] Re: HAL error after return out of hibernation

2006-09-23 Thread teardrop_onthefire
Following these guidelines pc return from sleep normaly:
To suspend to disk, choose Hibernate from the GNOME logout menu. To suspend
to RAM, edit

/etc/default/acpi-support

and uncomment the second line by deleting the # character, to read:

ACPI_SLEEP=true

Although I still get the brown stripes between login and splash screen,
no nvidea graphics card.

I though this fault was HAL related since at initialising desktop I got a
Gnu/HAL related error message with a link, but since no program worked, I could
not follow the link.
Now error message is no longer displayed, all programs work.
