[Bug 320581] Re: gvfs-fuse-daemon halted with futex_wait signal

2009-07-14 Thread Kaa
Hello,

It seems I have the same problem.
It happens with evolution (hangs sometimes) and even worse with a Java program
I use for work (it never starts).
I already posted on: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/374007

This is really a problem, can somebody help please?

Thanks,

Karen

Re: [Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2009-07-14 Thread gerstrong
it really would be nice to able to configure the Domain-Server or Workgroup
of a MS-Net when you install Ubuntu or be able to search it automatically.

You must fiddle around with config files to get the correct name.

Older versions had a configuration (The old network manager) to setup
this.

I also have that problem with Nautilus.

[Bug 399601] [NEW] File Roller 2.26.1 - clicking once on a file causes the file to stick to the cursor

2009-07-14 Thread Paul Weiss
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

This is a real annoying bug. At random times after opening a compressed
file, and clicking once on a file, the file gets stuck in double-click
and drag mode. If you leave the window with the file attached to the
cursor and click on the Desktop (for example), the file leaves the mouse
cursor, but as soon as you move the cursor inside the File Roller
window, it re-attaches itself. The only solution is to close File
Roller and restart it.

I'm not sure what to tell you about it not being repeatable on Windows, as
I don't use it. But I think it would be silly to restrict debugging efforts
to only those that can be repeated in Microsoft operating systems,
especially since it may well turn out to be a VM system issue.
I agree that this particular bug report has degenerated into nonsense and
I'll be leaving it alone henceforth.

[Bug 387957] Re: Improve Save As Dialog Box (focus issues)

2009-07-14 Thread gdi2k
Thanks for your note David. I'm not suggesting to change the behaviour
of the Find As You Type feature that allows quickly jumping through
directory structures by typing folders' initial letters. Personally I
use this all the time and think it's great.

The main issue here, especially for non-advanced users, is Scenario 1
(above), where the find as you type feature is not used (ie the user
double-clicks on folders to define the save location). In this case, the
focus is not returned to the Name field after double-clicking on
folders. This means that after finding the desired location, the user
has to move the mouse back to the Name field, highlight the existing
name (usually something like "Untitled 1"), then type a name in and
press Save.

In Windows, the focus is returned to the Name field after double
clicking on a folder. But Find as you type is also available on Windows
for advanced users - by single-clicking in the folder area (either on a
folder or in an empty space), focus is switched to the folder area and
find as you type can be used - focus only jumps back to the Name field
if the mouse is used to double click a folder. If enter is pressed to
enter a sub-folder, focus remains in the folder area.

My guess is that Ubuntu's interface was designed with the assumption
that the user would first name the file, then choose the location to
save it. I don't work this way and my guess is that I'm not alone. I
like to see the contents of a folder before choosing how to name a new
file.

I don't have a Mac to hand but I'll try and have a play with one to see
how they do it over the next couple of days - I'm sure they've got a
smart solution to this problem, and their layout is similar to Ubuntu's
(with the name field at the top).

In summary: If a folder is double clicked with the mouse, focus should
jump to the Name field. That is the only change I am proposing for this
paper cut. If enter is used to enter a folder, focus in the folder area
should be maintained (the current behaviour). Advanced users would not
be affected, but non-advanced users would be saved from a lot of
clicking.

[Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window

2009-07-14 Thread mac_v
Actually , Update notifier is no longer a valid name. Since the updates
behavior has been changed since Jaunty.

So renaming the update-notifier daemon > update-manager daemon would be better.
Since its now working just as an update manger daemon, and there is no other
specific notifier.

I'v opened a separate bug for this renaming> Bug #399591

If it is renamed then the description would be > "Checks and displays

[Bug 207072] Re: nautilus does not display samba shares for machines inside an ADS network.

2009-07-14 Thread Steve Langasek
As with so many other bugs, the solution is trivial once the problem can
be pinpointed. Here is the debdiff for hardy-proposed, fixing this bug
at last.

The new patch indicates a bug in daemon/libsmb-compat.h which is still
present upstream in the latest version, so ideally the patch should be
forwarded upstream; but given that this is a compat header for older
versions of samba (hardy and earlier), it's not worth applying the patch
separately to karmic.

Sorry to double post, but I tried this (using passphrase) and everything
went as expected (not need to reboot). So I think that what he said: "It
seams that seahorse does not like the key pair being modified
externaly." seems not true, because then passphrase would not matter.

So basically this bug in short is: "keys produced by ssh-keygen without
passphrase are not valid until system's reboot".

I think something like this is more important than "low".

This was really driving me crazy for a day, I don't restart too often my
PC (each two days), so thankfully I got here searching for "Agent
admitted failure to sign using the key."

Problem for me is I can't restart till tomorrow, and I can't SSH the
target machine directly (GitHub.com)

I tried restarting everything SSH-related but seems of not help.

I'll try Pedro's solution for now. Anyway, I don't think this should be
taken as a low priority bug.

No problem; happy to help.

The g-p-m maintainer made a comment in Gnome's Bugzilla #586582. He said
that g-p-m should only be doing the fsync()'s when batter is low, but
since that is not what I am seeing I filed a new bug in their Bugzilla:

Bug 588596 – g-p-m calls fsync() after writing power history data

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=588596

I attached an strace showing the fsync() every 150 seconds.

Guess we'll find out soon whether it's a bug or a "feature"...

Cheers,

Eloy Paris.-

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-07-14 Thread Theodore Ts'o
jamesnmandy,

For someone who 'does not have the time to file a proper bug report',
you seem to have plenty of time to write notes complaining about the
bug. Seriously --- if you aren't willing to help determine the problem
--- and you like GUI solutions --- maybe you should just go back to
Windows. You may find that you have even less responsiveness to your
bug reports, unless you pay $$$ to Microsoft, but hey, if it makes you
happier, you should switch.

The problem could be with Nautilus (the gui file manager); or it could
be with the device driver; or it could be with the ext3 filesystem issue
where some process was triggering fsync calls. If you aren't willing
to figure out why it's no fast enough for you, and you aren't willing to
lift your little finger to help us figure out why; then please, don't
complain --- you're clearly unhappy, and perhaps moving to Vista will
make you happy. And at the end of the day, it's better for you to be
happy than to have you bitter and complaining --- really, trust me, in
the end you'll be happier to stop kvetching about Linux. It's simply
not productive for anyone, least of all yourself.

On the other hand, if you are willing to learn a few things, and spend a
bit of time, then maybe using Linux will be more rewarding for you ---
and again, in the long time you will probably be happier.

[Bug 197762] Re: file transfers on USB disk are very slow

2009-07-14 Thread Theodore Ts'o
Eric,

The problem is that your problem may be very different from other
peoples' problem. First of all, in your test, you are continually
dirtying the page cache with "cp /dev/zero /mnt/bigfile".This brings
in filesystem effects, and VM effects, and so it's hard to tell what is
actually going on. Without a lot of instrumentation, and knowing
exactly the state of memory, and when the filesystem might be doing a
commit, it's hard to say exactly what might be going on. You also
haven't given us the kernel bootup messages (dmesg output after the
system boots), as well as the type of device that you are using, the
lsusb output, etc., etc., etc.You haven't told us how much memory
there is in the system.

And certainly the test which you did "(cp /dev/zero /media/disk/bigfile
&); sleep 10 ; time echo foo > /media/disk/test" is not one that we can
replicate on Windows, so the assertion that something is wrong is also
not something which is immediately obvious given the very limited amount
of information you have given. Maybe it's *somewhere* in this bug
report, bug this is why it is really not useful to mingle multiple
users' problems in one bug report.

If you want to open a separate bug report, give lots of details, and be
willing to work with people who can suggest specific, repeatable
experiments that examine one aspect of the system at a time, then we can
try to see if there's something unusual. If you just want to whine
about how horrible Ubuntu or Linux is, then keep on doing what you're
doing here. It's not going to lead to anything useful though. But if
you are really interested in being constructive, we need your help in
giving us something useful in terms of enough information so we can find
the root cause of a problem, and then try to solve it.

[Bug 146918] Re: Poor descriptions for some applications in Startup Programs window

2009-07-14 Thread era
I'm not entirely happy with the new description for Update Notifier:
"Check for available updates automatically". The wording is somewhat
verbose (why would it check for unavailable updates, and how? Why is
this "automatically"? I think I kind of know why you put it there, but
is it really necessary?) but above all, if you don't know what sorts of
updates, how would you find out? Both of the proposals above are IMHO
more informative.

Martin Albisetti  wrote on 2009-07-02:
> "Update notifier" - "Notifies you of system updates"

Andruk  wrote on 2009-07-02:
> "Update notifier" - "Notify about application updates"

"Check for software updates from Ubuntu and other software sources",
though a bit long, might approach some sort of synthesis.

Although I criticize the details of his wording, I think Michael Vogt's
proposal captures the essence of the discussion so far; describe what
functionality will stop working if you uncheck it. After all, that's
what this dialog box is meant for. Hence, perhaps Bluetooth Manager
could be something like "Discover Bluetooth devices within range" and
Network Manager perhaps something along the lines of "Discover and
connect to networks" (by implication, Internet connections; perhaps that
could somehow be worked into the description still).

[Bug 399531] Re: [karmic] shutdown menu immediately logs out

2009-07-14 Thread Chris Coulson
There are 2 bugs here. The first one is due to one of our patches to
implement a different session dialog, which will cause gnome-session to
crash if shutdown is not available. In particular, this bit of gnome-
session/gsm-logout-dialog.c:

switch (logout_dialog->priv->default_response) {
case GSM_LOGOUT_RESPONSE_LOGOUT:
info_text = ngettext ("You will be automatically logged "
  "out in %d second.",
  "You will be automatically logged "
  "out in %d seconds.",
  seconds);
break;

case GSM_LOGOUT_RESPONSE_SHUTDOWN:
info_text = ngettext ("This system will be automatically "
  "shut down in %d second.",
  "This system will be automatically "
  "shut down in %d seconds.",
  seconds);
break;

case GTK_RESPONSE_CANCEL:
info_text = _("You are currently logged in as \"%s\".\n");
GOES WRONG HERE
break;

default:
g_assert_not_reached ();
}

if (session_type == NULL) {
GsmConsolekit *consolekit;

consolekit = gsm_get_consolekit ();
session_type = gsm_consolekit_get_current_session_type
(consolekit);
g_object_unref (consolekit);
}

if (g_strcmp0 (session_type, GSM_CONSOLEKIT_SESSION_TYPE_LOGIN_WINDOW)
!= 0) {
char *name, *buf, *buf2;
name = g_locale_to_utf8 (g_get_real_name (), -1, NULL, NULL,
NULL);

if (!name || name[0] == '\0' || strcmp (name, "Unknown") == 0) {
   name = g_locale_to_utf8 (g_get_user_name (), -1 , NULL,
NULL, NULL);
}

if (!name) {
name = g_strdup (g_get_user_name ());
}

buf = g_strdup_printf (_("You are currently logged in as
\"%s\"."), name);
buf2 = g_strdup_printf (info_text, seconds); CRASHES
HERE
markup = g_markup_printf_escaped ("%s", g_strconcat
(buf, "\n", buf2, NULL));
g_free (buf);
g_free (buf2);
g_free (name);

I think that looks like the first bug.

The default_response is earlier set to GTK_RESPONSE_CANCEL (when it
would normally be GTK_RESPONSE_SHUTDOWN) because this fails:

if (!gsm_logout_supports_shutdown (logout_dialog)) {
gtk_widget_set_sensitive (tile, FALSE);
/* If shutdown is not available, let's just fallback
 * on cancel as the default action. We could fallback
 * on reboot first, then suspend and then hibernate
 * but it's not that useful, really */
logout_dialog->priv->default_response =
GTK_RESPONSE_CANCEL;
}

The reason for this is because in gsm_consolekit_can_stop, it calls
org.freedesktop.Consolekit.Manager.CanStop, which returns with a
permissions error, and that looks like the second bug.

This is completely not flamebait, promise, I have been doing nothing but
bragging on the latest build of Ubuntu, but I loaded Windows 7 back on this
same exact machine, only difference was the OS, and suddenly I get transfer

On Ubuntu 9.04 it would never get above 15Mb/s and would quickly drop to
nearly half of that and eventually stop altogether if the transfer was a
very large one that had to be sustained. My point is, for all the nay
sayers who say it's people's hardwareit's not, unless it's that Ubuntu
is not playing nice with certain hardware configurations. This is obviously
the case, but it is not a hardware issue at all when a simple change of the
OS completely fixes the issue.

"and" so the arguments of "it's fast at first, then gets slow" from naive users
are
spurious, which I'm sure you realized.

There has been a lot of unhelpful or misguided information posted to this bug,
but be careful not to discount the good with the bad. It's fairly clear you
either
don't believe there's a problem or aren't interested in it, which is fine, but
it
might be both more helpful and more civil to just say so, rather than being rude
to people who are trying to help with whatever means they have available.

[Bug 372132] Re: "Create Document" Templates difficult to use

2009-07-14 Thread l-x-l
As a recent ubuntu convert I can honestly say that the current behavior
of "Create Document" is completely useless. How often do "regular" users
want to create an "Empty File"? At a minimum templates should be
installed for creating:

1. OO Word Processor file
2. OO Spreadsheet
3. Text File (to replace the name "Empty File")

As it stands now there is zero functionality to the current behavior.

Public bug reported:

[Bug 399516] Re: Missing "Run Xclient Script" option from gdm sessions menu

2009-07-14 Thread Jonathan Thiessen
I do not know if this is the preferred method of remedy, however, I
propose the following fix:

=> Create a '.desktop' file in '/usr/share/xsessions' [owned by
root:root with permissions 644] whose 'Exec' entry is
'/etc/X11/Xsession'. See attached example. This creates a gdm sessions
menu entry that runs Xsession without any arguments. The default
behavior of Xsession is to check for the user's ~/.xsession, and get sh
to interpret it, thus accomplishing what we want. Of course, this should
work with more than just gdm [in the case that other display managers
similarly lack an equivalent option by default].

[Bug 399492] [NEW] Feature request : Possible improvements for notifications

2009-07-14 Thread Steve Dodier
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Hello,

I'm writing this feature request because I believe power notifications
can be greatly improved by being simplified to the strict necessary.

I began a discussion about this subject, that you can find on the
Ayatana ML ( https://lists.launchpad.net/ayatana/msg00146.html ), and I
ended up drafting new triggered and non-triggered notifications, as
follows (preview of the result here :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkdaiXXcv8w ) :

Icon info
Title "Power information"
Body "Computer is running on battery power
 Laptop battery 1 hour 45 minutes remaining (72.0%)"

Becomes

Icon notification-battery-070
Title "1:45 hours remaining"

I'll include a file (the shell script used for the video above) with
many more examples, and proposals of improvement for the "battery low"
notifications too. The icons are created and uploaded into the Human
icon theme. If needed, they can be put in notify-osd. They basically
convey the % left and plugged / not plugged information to make the text
part lighter (images can hold much more meaning than words in some
cases).

Obviously I think this is implementable only as an Ubuntu patch (at
least till the notification-* icons get some recognition outside of
notify-osd / ubuntu), but I still think it's worth a try as it makes
notifications _really_ easier to read.

Voilà. If you need any other information about this feature request,
please let me know ASAP. I really hope this can be done for Karmic.

[Bug 380211] Re: suspend often fails without any way to workaround

2009-07-14 Thread Ittay Dror
First, how can I reproduce it? Start working all day on the desktop cd?
I'm sure that if I just load it, and try to suspend everything will
work. And what happens when I reproduce? What information will it gather
for you to fix the issue?

Second, I think that the comment is an attempt to brush this issue
aside. The reason is that I did not open the bug asking for gnome-power-
manager to be fixed, instead I asked for tools that will let me work
around the issues that it has.

There is no reason why I should not be able to suspend my laptop in the
same sense I should always be able to shut it down. In both cases I risk
loosing data etc., but this is for me to decide.

So please, instead of asking me to reproduce a bug I did not ask to
solve, why not focus on giving me tools to work around it (or better
yet, analyze it, e.g., be able to say which application did not freeze)

I will not try to recreate the issue. There's no point in it.

[Bug 399478] [NEW] Evince Document Viewer: annotated PDFs do not display properly

2009-07-14 Thread Dragomir Minkovski
Public bug reported:

PDF with highlighted text displays instead with the highlight covering over the
text.
Used Apple Preview on Mac OS X to highlight certain lines of text with a yellow
highlight.
Evince has the yellow almost completely covering the text. The text is
"yellowed-out" (like blacked-out) rather than highlighted.
Installed acroread (from partner/commercial repo.). Displays the highlight
correctly.

Note: A rectangle annotation added around an image in Preview is
displayed properly in Evince.

PDF annotation/commenting capabilities should be added to the desktop
environment to match Apple. Adobe Acrobat Standard is US$299.00 and is
too much to pay for just this set of features and Acrobat Standard is
not available for Ubuntu. Mac OS X is US$129.00 and now includes this
feature.

Use case:
University student, receives reading assignments in the form of PDF or Word
docs posted to a wiki or URLs to public HTML or PDF sources. Student is
comfortable with paper-less online reading but would like to be able to mark up
text as one would a paper text book. The case of Word docs annotation is met by
OOffice. Web pages can be printed to PDF using built-in print to PDF in CUPS.
Once have PDFs, need to be able to annotate them.

I realize being able to annotate/comment PDFs may seem like a feature
request that would be low in a very long list of feature requests;
however, in the bigger picture, I have read how a major goal for
Canonical/Ubuntu Desktop is to surpass Apple and this is a feature Apple
has.

Before, by including PDF generation both Ubuntu and OS X were more even
in this feature area and both surpassed Windows. While Ubuntu users
could easily Print-to-PDF (from a web page for example when encountering
a receipt that says "print this for your records" when storing it on
disk rather than printing it on paper) or generate PDFs from OOffice,
Windows users had to purchase PDF generation software. This is still a
nice feature Ubuntu has over Windows. But now Apple has gone one level
more by adding the basic PDF commenting/annotating.

For the feature request, if the only Ubuntu users who would really want
this annotation feature could pay $$$ for it, then one approach would be
to instead have Canonical convince Adobe to make Acrobat Standard
available for Ubuntu, perhaps with the purchasing being handled through
the Canonical store along with the Fluendo, Parallels, and PowerDVD
products.

In the fact this is not feature request, it's a bug. xournal and kpdf
are showing the file in question like they should, but evince fail.

[Bug 399479] [NEW] not working correctly when not run using sudo

2009-07-14 Thread Stephen Glunt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Nautilus was working fine until I ran it as root so that I could easily
move some files around without changing the permissions (I'm new to
linux). However after running it as root, whenever I don't run it as
root it does not display any of the contents of drives or folders nor
does it switch between drives and folders and frequently the buttons
betwixt the display window and the menus do not render. It still works
perfectly when run as root though.

I am using ubuntu 9.04 with the latest version of nautilus.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/nautilus
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
Package: nautilus 1:2.26.2-0ubuntu2

SourcePackage: nautilus
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-13-generic x86_64

[Bug 395443] Re: keeps saying my name is not registerd in sudoers file in terminal

2009-07-14 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
gnome-terminal doesn't have any code to manage the sudoers file or sudo
actions, it's just a terminal emulator, the reports needs to be
reassigned.

** Package changed: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) => ubuntu
