[Bug 709935] Re: File MGR is very slow on any type fs

2011-01-29 Thread bsalem
More information.

This hang happens after a couple of changes to the filesystem, such as moving
files or creating new folders.
It is so bad that I kill all instances of the file manager and open a terminal
to give commands against the
filesystem, and reopen the file manager to check the files. I need the
thumbnail feature to check the files
which are images. I have duplicates and want to remove them.

Is there any way to find out what the last version was and remove the current
package and fall back to that?
The last release worked much better.

If I dare say so, it appears that one takes great risk in applying recommended
upgrades. I am tempted to
wait a good deal longer to apply them, perhaps several months into the release
cycle, rather than becoming
a beta tester :-) This is not the first serious problem I've encountered with
this release of Ubuntu.

[Bug 710002] [NEW] Natty Unity 3D _usr_bin_evince.1000.crash

2011-01-29 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Was browsing the internet also had a terminal session up and got a drop
down notification of evince crash. Tried to do a report from the drop
down menu but it complained about obsolete packages. This is a brand
new total install of 27 January CD build on Aspire one D255E running
Unity 3D.

There is a crash report but I don't know if ubuntu-bug evince will pick
it up.

[Bug 709994] [NEW] backlight turns off when gdm loads

2011-01-29 Thread Mark A Gerads
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When I start my laptop (Acer Aspire 5734z-4836), I can see the bios, and I can
see grub.
When gdm first starts, it is so black that it looks like the screen is off.
It still displays things on the screen; If you look at it at just the right
angle it looks like maybe .4% brightness.
I thus deduced it shuts off the backlight.
Shutting the laptop lid and opening it again turns the backlight on.

I am using Natty Narwhal. I would very much like to not need to shut and
open my lid every time I use this operating-system, and to that end, I
will give all and any files required.

[Bug 703302] Re: Toshiba Laptop battery not being detected

2011-01-29 Thread InTheFade
I have an L640-01H and I experience the same problem in any distribution
I try.

When started on battery power, "acpi -V" shows:

Adapter 0: off-line
Cooling 0: LCD 0 of 7
Cooling 1: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 2: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 3: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 4: Processor 0 of 10

The latest BIOS for my model (1.90) had no effect.

[Bug 709978] [NEW] empathy is not enought good in IRC chat

2011-01-29 Thread txomon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Well, I am almost sure that everyone that has installed ubuntu new, has
tried to use all the features, such as evolution, gwibber and empathy.
And I am almost sure that when you try to use empathy in a normal IRC
channel you see that there are several IRC common commands that are not
supported. I just want to make empathy the usual IRC client in gnome and
not as the windows media player is when we speak about playing a movie.

I have been reviewing the IRC RFC.1459 and there are a lot of commands
that could be implemented there, for example, listing the channels. That
is a vital function of a IRC client. We could also talk about whois,
quit, reconnect, list . In general, all those commands that we use
normally in a IRC client. I am not talking that they should all be
implemented in command line, for example listing all the channels in the
chat windows would just be horrible for the user.

As a reference, It could be tried to be more like xchat. That would be
perfect.

2011-01-29 Thread Vytautas
Somehow the icons that appear with non-transparent backgrounds are using
window colors instead of panel background. Same bug exists in xfce (last
checked 4.8). You may fix that by using a theme which panel is of the
same color as windows. In my opinion, that's nonsense and I've given up
and started using awn as my panel and tint2 (on netbook). Both work
nicely. So if anyone could look into gnome panel code and make sure it
doesn't "borrow" window colors and uses it's own instead would be
appreciated by all gnome users :)

[Bug 213432] Re: gtk_window.present() doesn't work if the window is already on another desktop

Chris > For example, try Getting Things GNOME (apt-get install gtg).
Open a task, move that task to another desktop and try to reopen that

Other example: gwibber from the MeMenu. Open GWibber on one desktop.
Switch to another. From the MeMenu, choose micro-blogging. Nothing
happens.

There quite a lot of examples here and there, I could try to list them
but I'm not sure it is useful.

[Bug 709935] [NEW] File MGR is very slow on any type fs

2011-01-29 Thread bsalem
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I think that among recent recommended updates were a new kernel and file
manager (see trouble report from nautilus. I have noticed with an NTFS
filesystem on a USB bus that file operations seem to take longer and
longer and I get a spinner more often than I think I expect. Shell
access via terminal seems not to be affected, only file mgr. The symptom
also appears on the root FS on the boot drive in the main system after
I've been using the external drive. I do have thumbnails turned on, but
I think that even though that causes overhead, most of the delay seems
to be with file moves and rereading the driectory afterwrds.

I know that the external drive on the USB bus has questionable
performance. It is a Western Digital My Book 1.5 TB drive and it does
not have the best reputation for response or throughput, but it worked
much faster in U 9.04 and U10.10 before the latest upgrades. I had
thought that naybe there was added checking for NTFS going on, and I
could accept a little delay if that were the case, but the trouble
report seems indicate some critical failure of performance.

The trouble report out of Nautilus seems to have most of the information
for a bug cited on this page.

[Bug 607320] Re: Disk Utility lacks door lock/unlock button for CD/DVD drives

2011-01-29 Thread drizzle
Rising Eagle,

Please try the man pages for eject by executing "man eject" in the
terminal. There is an option to lock the eject button on a cd-rom. This
option might meet your needs until a feature in the disk utility can be
implemented.

   -i on|1|off|0
This option controls locking of the hardware eject button. When
enabled, the drive will not be ejected when the button is pressed.
This is useful when you are carrying a laptop in a bag or case and
don't want it to eject if the button is inadvertently pressed.

Will also see if this bug is logged upstream.

[Bug 622599] Re: Attempt to export to flickr results in error message "POST size too large. Try something smaller, mmkay?"

2011-01-29 Thread abdulet
M its a MTU problem, but it only affects to .Net libflickr so in my
case and any others it solved changing the MTU to 1200. That's the
command for those that don't know how to do:

sudo ip link set mtu 1200 dev wlan0

changing wlan0 with your network device

enjoy!!

[Bug 709877] [NEW] Icons can't be stretched in Nautilus file manager windows

2011-01-29 Thread drx
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

On the Desktop, Icons can be easily positioned and stretched, which is
great for organizing one's data.

Inside Nautilus' file manager windows, one can position all icons, but
it is impossible to stretch them. That is a pity, as it takes away one
mode of expression for arranging files, without any reason apparent to
me.

To move around this, I used to move icons to the Desktop, stretched them
there, then moved them back where I wanted them. Now the icons lose
their stretching information when displayed in the file manager windows.
:/

Please make icons stretchable inside file manager windows, too.

[Bug 709840] [NEW] [lucid] brasero, froze - locked up system when choosing disk to write to.

2011-01-29 Thread Stanz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Choosing to 'Write to disk', the /daily/alt-amd64.
Using cd-rw, at the window to choose 'Select a disc to write to', I chose
'Properties',->burn speed-4x,->'burnproof', 'Close'.
Clicking 'Burn', Brasero locked up--which also locked up screen, mouse &
keyboard.
I had to reboot and use 'ubuntu-bug brasero' and hope helpful logs are attached!

I expected brasero to realize target disk needed to be 'blanked', to
proceed...instead everything froze/locked up.
After saving this page--I'll repeat steps.

[Bug 566134] Re: brightness-applet behaviour is good

2011-01-29 Thread Csaba Lack
I am also affected by this problem.
HP Pavilion DV6 2160eh (Nvidia GeForce G105M) Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick

It used to work fine (in 9.10).

Maybe because of control keys are swapped...

I can change brightness by set manually in CLI as root which are working fine:
#in this case brightness applet gets the new percentage as well (better):
acpi_fakekey 224 #bright down by 10% (exec it more times result darker)
acpi_fakekey 225 #bright up by 10% (exec it more times result lighter)

   or

#setting this parameter manually does not have an effect on brightness applet
cat /proc/acpi/video/VGA1/LCD/brightness # show current values and ranges
   BRIGHT="50"  #values could be: 0-100
   echo "$BRIGHT" > /proc/acpi/video/VGA1/LCD/brightness

If I set manually the brightness to 50 and I start acpi_listen, then check
brightness current parameter in case of keypress
# FN+F7 (bright down key): video LCD 0087
   - results: current=0 and LCD brightness lighting as maximum until some of
the acpi events (eg. power management changes)
   - pressing more times results nothing else

# FN+F8 (bright up key): video LCD 0086
   - results: current=10 and brightness goes to that level (10%)
   - pressing more times results: it is trying to be lighter but after
releasing goes back to 10%

[Bug 580961] Re: unzip fails to deal correctly with filename encodings

2011-01-29 Thread Shimi Chen
At least for me the difference between the packages is only in terminal output.
With Brian's package I get the question marks like Sergey and with Sergey's
package I get the actual filenames in the terminal(albeit mirrored, but that's
a bug with bash).
However, in *both* cases when I navigate with nautilus to the folder I
extracted to the filenames are listed correctly in my language(hebrew).
(note that I use -O CP862)

[Bug 580961] Re: unzip fails to deal correctly with filename encodings

2011-01-29 Thread Sergey Nagaytsev
@Launchpad Janitor in #81, the proposed fix really BREAKS the fix by
@frol 's PPA.

$wget
http://ru.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/u/unzip/unzip_6.0-4ubuntu1_amd64.deb
$sudo dpkg -i unzip_6.0-4ubuntu1_amd64.deb
$unzip -l russian.zip
008 - Russian/?? ?? ??
??, ?? ??.txt

Ooops, it's broken !

$wget
http://ppa.launchpad.net/frol/zip-i18n/ubuntu/pool/main/u/unzip/unzip_6.0-4ppa3_amd64.deb
$sudo dpkg -i unzip_6.0-4ppa3_amd64.deb
$unzip -l russian.zip
008 - Russian/Съешь ещё этих мягких французских булок, да выпей же чаю.txt

Fixed, we got it back !

The archive is attached, made by GUI 7z from Windows via Wine.

P.S. 'libnatspec' was installed previously and never removed.
P.S.2 In File Roller, it's broken both ways

[Bug 568163] Re: brightness applet does not allow mouse clicks

2011-01-29 Thread David Bell
This is also affecting me on:

Dell Latitude E4310 Ubuntu 10.10
Sony Vaio VPCEB3C5 Ubuntu 10.10

Do you think, perhaps, I dunno..this could be fixed? It seems to be an
open and confirmed bug in Ubuntu and I suspect the fix is going to be
trivial. I don't think this is anything to do with hardware, it seems to
be a software issue since if you right click after you open the
brightness applet it magically works.

[Bug 693642] Re: nautilus memory leak

2011-01-29 Thread warcry
This is fixed for me...
The problem was I had a very large file (~10 GB) file called .hidden in my
home, but nautilus uses .hidden files to read file names who should hide... So
the memory leak was predictable.

[Bug 709751] [NEW] dependency on missing libgdata7

2011-01-29 Thread Jelmer Vernooij
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-data-server

evolution-data-server in natty (2.32.1-0ubuntu4) depends on libgdata7,
which is currently not available in natty (only in maverick).

It also depends on libgdata11 which seems like a better choice. Perhaps
triggering a new build will fix it?

[Bug 709737] [NEW] Graphical Search Progress

2011-01-29 Thread Jacky Alciné
Public bug reported:

As I use Evince very, very often, I've noticed that when I search for
text in my large documents, that a text progress appears at the bottom
of the screen. I'm assuming that this is a logarithmic search for text,
and since incremental progress can be displayed (as text, currently)
that it be replaced with a progress and an indicator of how much time
would be remaining for the current search to be completed. Also, instead
of having it pop up constantly, it can tell if the search operation will
take an extremely short time (say 30 milliseconds) and show only
'Searching...' instead. I feel that such a little feature would enhance
the user experience of Evince greatly.
