I remove ~/.config/nautilus ,did not function. I am still having problems. I tried removing, purging & reinstalling Nautilus; no joy. Then I found this bug and tried: * Removing ~/.config/nautilus This worked. I have desktop icons again and a file manager. However, Nautilus has just one menu, titled "Files", and it contains no entries. Removing the directory .config/nautilus worked for me too. Same issue here, upgraded from 16.04 to 16.10, the desktop was blank, and Nautilus wouldn't launch. This happened for me after an update from Ubuntu Gnome 16.04.
