Title:
Cursor Tracking with Gnome Shell Magnifier on Wayland

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Affected version
  GNOME 3.36 - 3.40.
  Ubuntu 20.04, 20.10, 21.04 and Fedora 34 Beta.
  Wayland only.
  Bug summary
When running GNOME shell with Wayland, the cursor and focus tracking
functionality of the magnifier (a11y feature) do not correctly compute the
cursor/focus location. The position is calculated from the top left of the
window but the windows position is not included. This causes the magnifier to
track the wrong location when the window is not maximiser or is on a second
monitor.

I suspect this is related to the way in which wayland is designed. But
my experience in this area is minimal. When using X11 this feature
  works correctly.

The wiki page states that under wayland the cursor and focus tracking
work but this information is either out dated or was not tested
  correctly.

  Steps to reproduce
From the Gnome desktop, open a terminal by pressing ctrl + alt + t or by
opening the activities overlay and searching for "terminal".
Press super + left arrow key to maximize the terminal window on the left side
of the screen.
Activity the magnifier by pressing super + alt + 8.
Type text into the terminal window. The magnified view will move with the
text cursor.
Press super + right arrow key to maximize the terminal windows on the right
side of the screen.
Type text into the terminal. The magnified view will move but it will not
show the text cursor. It will move when text is entered but will focus on the
left side of the screen.
  What happened
The magnified view does not follow the text/focus cursor correctly.

What did you expect to happen
The magnified view should follow the cursor and show the cursor as it does
when the widnows is maximized. The correct behaviour can also be seen in Gnome
shell running with X11.

Fixed it!

The problem is caused by the package `mesa-opencl-icd` or one of its
dependencies.

I removed this package and its dependencies and now LibreOffie works
fine.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or expected.

libreoffice (original deb version) and it displayed?

No, so far I have been able to get the version installed from the
repository (debs) to work.

I've removed the Discord snap to try and ensure it is not causing a
problem. But this has had no effect.

I've done a complete removal of libreoffice using the method discribed
above. I've attached the journalctl output when running after re-
installing.

LibreOffice still fails to start.

I've fixed the Discord issue. Turns out it constantly tries to scan for
other applications so it can show what game you are playing. I'll
reboot and give it a try though.

I have noticed that after trying to launch LibreOffice my system memory
usages goes crazy. At the desktop after a reboot my system is using 11%
(3.5GB) or memory. After running LibreOffice it jumps to 62% (19 GB).
I've check what processes are running and even running top as root the
memory usage is not attributed to any given process.

When using the GNOME magnifier (Zoom) feature the magnified display
flickers when used in any of the following none full screen modes:
Left, Right, Top or Bottom screen part. This occurs when the mouse
moves towards the edge directly opposite to the magnified view. This
also occurs if 'Magnifier extends outside of screen' is enabled.

  To reproduce:
  * Open GNOME Control Centre.
  * Go to Universal Access.
  * Click on Zoom.
  * Enable Zoom
  * Selct either Top, Bottom, Left or Right from the screen part drop down list.
  * Move the mouse cursor to the opossite edge of the screen to that where the
magnified view is located.

I have tested on multiple systems running Ubuntu 18.04, 18.10, 19.04

  Tested with all extension uninstalled.

I've attached a screen shot from a program called Ghidra. It is a Java
application and so it may be that it is a different issue. But it is
using the GTK theme and the colours look the same as gedit.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1870393] [NEW] Poor contrast in some applications

2020-04-02 Thread Lee Clark
Public bug reported:

In some applications the contrast between the background and text colour
is very poor when using the Yaru theme in "Dark Mode".

For example, If the theme is set to Dark via the settings application
under "Appearance" and gedit (GNOME Text Editor" is launched. The

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1868399] [NEW] Ghost copies of foreground dialogues when using GNOME Magnifier

2020-03-21 Thread Lee Clark
Public bug reported:

Affected version

Tested with Ubuntu 20.04 current daily build using Xorg. Mutter version
3.36.

Bug summary

When using the GNOME magnifier feature ghost copies of dialogues such as
the Alt+F2 window or the password prompt appear if the magnified view
moves away from the dialogue.

Steps to reproduce

1. Enable GNOME magnifier by pressing Supper + Alt + 8.
2. Press Alt+F2 to open the command dialogue.
3. Use the mouse to pan around the screen.

What happened

A slightly fadded copy of the dialogue will move around the screen,
keeping its relative position.

What did you expect to happen

This should not happen. The dialogue should be displayed once and should
move appropriately when the magnifier view pans away from it.

Title:
Ghost copies of foreground dialogues when using GNOME Magnifier

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Affected version

Tested with Ubuntu 20.04 current daily build using Xorg. Mutter
  version 3.36.

  Bug summary

When using the GNOME magnifier feature ghost copies of dialogues such
as the Alt+F2 window or the password prompt appear if the magnified
view moves away from the dialogue.

The dialogue should be displayed once and
should move appropriately when the magnifier view pans away from it.

Also tested on Fedora 30, the issue exists but manifests slightly
differently.

Should I raise this upstream? If so which GNOME project should it be
raised against?

GNOME control center UI does not update dconf setting for magnifier

Status in gnome-control-center:
  New
Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu:

Status in gnome-control-center source package in Disco:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]

If you attempt to change the mouse cursor tracking mode in the gnome
control centre UI for the gnome magnifier the radio buttons have no
effect. If yous use dconf-editor to manual change the option at:
  org.gnome.desktop.a11y.magnifier.mouse-tracking the setting will have
  an effect.

  [Test Case]

  To reproduce
  * Open gnome control centre and select universal access.
  * Click on Zoom.
  * Toggle between "Keep the mouse cursor centred" and the other two options
(proportional and push).
  * If you enable Zoom and change these settings they have no effect.
  * Open dconf-editor.
  * Navigate to:

  org/gnome/desktop/a11y/magnifier/

  * Select the mouse tracking entry and change the setting to different
values while the Zoom is enabled. The setting will change the way the
  mouse tracking behaves.

  Then install gnome-control-center{,-data,-faces} from disco-proposed
and find that the UI now successfully changes the dconf values and the
  mouse tracking behavior.

  [Regression Potential]

The code changes are specific to the Zoom Options window, where some
of the options are currently broken. Low regression risk.

2019-06-02 Thread Lee Clark
I couldn't figure out why I didn't see the issue in my VM. But
additional testing shows the issue in the VM. It depends on which
windows are visible. If you close all windows and return to the desktop
it always occurs.

Also enabling the 'Magnifier extends outside screen' checkbox also
causes the issues.

OK, turns out my laptop is on 18.10 not 19.04. I assumed the upgrade
would go all the way but I was wrong. :(

I'm upgrading now and will test again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1831144] Re: GNOME control center UI does not update dconf setting for magnifier mouse tracking m ode

2019-05-31 Thread Lee Clark
Turns out I already reported this on the GNOME gitlab a while back but
have had no reply. I've updated it with the new information I've
learned. Here is the link: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-
shell/issues/865

I've looked at the commit but it's not immediately obvious to me why it
isn't working or if it is even related to this commit. But I'll look it
it more over the weekend.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1831140] Re: GNOME Magnifier Flickering when using none-full screen modes

2019-05-31 Thread Lee Clark
I've attached the requested output.

I have done additional testing today on my Dell XPS laptop running
Ubuntu 19.04, my personal desktop running 18.04 and my work PC running
18.04.

* I removed all extensions, uninstalled packages for those that had them or
deleted via the gnome extension website.
* Rebooted
* Re-enabled magnifier and switched between 'Full Screen' and 'Left' Screen
parts.

I see the issue on all three machines though on 19.04 the effect is
slightly different.

Opening the activities overlay causes the issue to fanish until it is
closed again.

2019-05-30 Thread Lee Clark
Tested on physical hardware with 19.04. The issue is still present but
the viaul manifestaton is slightly different. Rather than black flickers
it's more of a shading effect that flickers on and off with mouse
movement. It can also be caused by enabling the option to extent the
magnified contents beyond the bounds of the desktop.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1831140] [NEW] GNOME Magnifier Flickering when using none-full screen modes

2019-05-30 Thread Lee Clark
Public bug reported:

When using the GNOME magnifier (Zoom) feature the magnified display
flickers when used in any of the following modes: Left, Right, Top or
Bottom screen part. This occures when the mouse moves towards the edge
directly opossite to the magnified view.

To reproduce:
* Open GNOME Control Centre.
* Go to Universal Access.
* Click on Zoom.
* Enable Zoom
* Selct either Top, Bottom, Left or Right from the screen part drop down list.
* Move the mouse cursor to the opossite edge of the screen to that where the
magnified view is located.

I have tested on multiple systems running Ubuntu 18.04. I am yet to test
with 19.04.

I use this feature to allow me to use two monitors with one showing a
magnified view the other showing a normal view.

Happy to provide additional details.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

When zoom is enabled, the top bar and some shell dialogs (wireless
network selection, shutdown dialog, etc.) are not displayed properly.
  (See the attached screenshots.)

  [Test Case]

  1. Enable Zoom in Setting > Universal Access
  2. (Optional) Set zoom factor to around 3 (or higher)
  3. Look at the top bar. You will notice that all texts and icons are now
gone. If you move your cursor to the right of the top bar, and then click on
the status menu, you will see that only a portion of the menu is shown.
  4. For the shell dialogs, go to the Settings app. In the Wifi section, choose
one of the secured network available. You will see that the password dialog is
not displayed in its entirety.

  [Regression Potential]

Low. The affected code is only used in rendering shell panels and
popup menus at the moment. So any potential regression (like the
original bug) would be noticed in those places only, and not beyond.
Furthermore, the upstream fix has been tested regularly for 8 months
  already.

2019-02-26 Thread Lee Clark
I've tested the updated package in a 18.04 VM and also installed on my
laptop in both cases the issue is fixed.

Thank you everyone who has worked on this issue. Very much appreciated.

2019-02-02 Thread Lee Clark
I tested this in a VM and it appears to work fine. Bryce, did you reboot
after installing? That was required for me.

I look forward to this going into 18.04 so I can finally get off 16.04!

This bug is preventing me upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04. I see that the
upstream fix is still waiting to be merged. Will this fix make it into
Ubuntu 18.10? Will it be back ported to 18.04?
