[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1774188] Re: Unlocking the screen takes 5 seconds in Xorg sessions (not so much in Wayland sessions)

2018-11-01 Thread bitinerant
I occasionally see this on two separate 18.04 installations using Xorg
sessions. The time to unlock varies from a couple of seconds to several
minutes. Everything other than unlocking the screen feels to work at a
normal speed.

I can reliably reproduce this issue (cause screen unlocking to take
several minutes) by reading files from my Android 8 phone over USB
(phone in "Use USB to transfer files" mode; Ubuntu directory
/run/user/1000/gvfs/mtp:host...). (Probably not related, but this file
transfer seems extremely slow.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1448778] Re: Evince fails to display some fonts (some font thing failed)

2018-10-11 Thread bitinerant
I have a number of PDF files which, when opened, display some text but
not others, and show dozens of "some font thing failed" lines in the
terminal. The PDFs appear fine in Firefox. I don't know what "texlive"
is, so I'm quite sure I'm not using that, but I do have some fonts in
~/.fonts

Thanks to the above comment, I tried:

sudo apt install apparmor-utils
sudo aa-complain evince

Now Evince displays the PDFs properly and does not show the "some font
thing failed" errors.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1448778] Re: Evince fails to display some fonts (some font thing failed)

2018-10-11 Thread bitinerant
I have additional information. Within ~/.fonts I have a subfolder
containing some Windows fonts. It seems that if those files are not
OWNED by the user running Evince (even though they are group readable),
then Evince does not display the fonts at all.

I feel this is a bug. At the very least, Evince should display a
permissions error to the user rather than a document with a lot of
missing information. Better yet, it should display the text in another
font. Better yet, apparmor should be adjusted to allow it to read these
font files.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1448778] Re: Evince fails to display some fonts (some font thing failed)

2018-10-13 Thread bitinerant
Seth--thanks for the helpful details.

I appreciate the suggestions, but none quite fit my use case. It's
really 2 users wanting to share the fonts--one owns them and the other
has a symlink. If I put them in /usr/local/share/fonts/ then they don't
get backed up and can't be modified. I think the simplest option for me
is to use the extra 74 MB and make a copy for each user.

I understand the execution privileges issue if the font files are owned
by another user, so you've convinced me that this is a valid security
precaution.

Do you agree, however, that it would be helpful to display a message for
the user rather than empty space in their PDF?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1036029] Re: All menus are empty when using Unity Global Menus

2013-02-08 Thread bitinerant
Hackel, does the attached screen shot show the issue are describing?
Only a small gray box drops down where the menu should be. Tapping alt
and typing does not work properly either, so all menu commands are
inaccessible. I've seen this in Firefox and Nautilus on two different
12.04 installs. The only way I know to clear the problem is to close
all instances of the application and restart it. I don't yet know how
to reproduce this issue--perhaps it only occurs after a Compiz crash.

Bug description:

When I hover over the global menu, the menu items are there (Buddies,

empty stub instead of the menu. The same behaviour is observed from
both the primary Pidgin menu and also the conversation menu. The menu
items change, as they should, but again the actual menus themselves
are empty. This may or may not be related to bug #782537 which only
applied to the Conversation Send To menu.

I am currently running 1:2.10.6-0ubuntu1+pidgin1.12.04 from the
official PPA, so I cannot confirm whether this happens with the
current released version in precise. It severely limits the usability
  of Pidgin.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 897322] Re: PDF saved forms are not compatible with Adobe Reader

2012-05-17 Thread bitinerant
I was hit by this today. I completed an important applicatoin form with
Evince 3.4.0, verified that it looked correct (in Evince), and submitted
it via email only to hear back that the administrators (presumably using
Windows and Adobe Reader) were unable to open it.

Bug description:
After upgrading to 12.04, rhythmbox will sometimes stop playing daap
files, only to after a few minutes start playing a different file
  again.

Ie, if I connect to a mt-daapd server running lucid with rhythmbox on
precise, I can play individual files fine. I have selected to have
songs play in random order, and rhythmbox will continue to the next
song fine. Occassionally audio will stop in one of the songs and then
minutes later it will start up again (with no user interaction) in
another song. When it does stop, I can click to fast forward to
another song and it works ok. This does not seem to happen with local
files (I played them for hours with no interruption), only daap served
  files.

I have tried to correlate this with a problem with networking in
precise, but do not see any messages problems in /var/log/syslog that
would indicate a problem. Rhythmbox can play a mixture of ogg and mp3
files fine (ie, it is not a codecs issue). There is nothing in
.xsession-errors when this occurs. I tried to strace rhythmbox at the
time of the problem, but couldn't figure out what was happening.

This worked fine in 11.10 and earlier.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 794142] Re: Printing PDFs with some greyscale images results in the images appearing as negatives

2012-08-15 Thread bitinerant
Thank you, Kuroshima, for reporting this. I have struggled with this
bug on Ubuntu 10.10 and 12.04. I didn't report it myself because my
problematic PDFs are copyrighted. However, I am attaching a screenshot
of Evince's screen display (left) and Evince's print preview (right).

This sounds like a very old Ghostscript bug
(http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691760) but I ran the test
documented there and it worked fine, so I think it's unrelated.

My work-around was to print via Xpdf, which was awkward but worked.
However, now Xpdf is completely broken (bug #943195) and I am without a
way to print my maps at all.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 876049] Re: Opening extra pane causes current pane to be squished

2012-02-22 Thread bitinerant
I am unable to reproduce this bug as described, but I can easliy
reproduce bug 938069 (marked as dup of this one) via:

  * open Trash
  * select View > Extra Pane (or press F3)
  * select Go > Home

I'll let the programmers decide if these are really the same issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 574663] Re: Evince fails to properly print pdf files

2012-01-27 Thread bitinerant
I reproduced this problem in 11.10 Oneiric 64-bit by opening the

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 803348] Re: In Firefox, scrolling and then pressing Ctrl causes zoom

2014-04-16 Thread bitinerant
As dimovnike wrote, this happens on simple pages too--as long as they
are at least several screens long. Two-finger scrolling has momentum,
or "coasts" a while after removing your fingers from the touchpad if
they are in motion. I love this feature and think it works well. The
problem is that the Ctrl key should not zoom the document while Firefox
is coasting! This bug can unintentionally zoom in or out, depending on
the scroll direction. I suspect most people who face this problem never
realize why the document zoomed in or out.

Title:
In Firefox, scrolling and then pressing Ctrl causes zoom

Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When scrolling a heavy webpage in Firefox tend to lag on my computer
so that the motion of the page continues after I have stopped giving
scrolling commands. If I then, before the page has stopped, press Ctrl
(to Ctrl-Tab switch between tabs, for example) Firefox starts to zoom
the page (as when you scroll while holding Ctrl). This is unwanted
behaviour every time for me. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 with Firefox 5
  (5.0+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.11.04.2). In Ubuntu 10.10, the
behaviour was the expected, i.e., zooming or scrolling was determined
based on if you held Ctrl pressed while rolled your scroll wheel, not
whether Ctrl was pressed during the motion of the page.

  To reproduce:
  1. Open a webpage in Firefox, preferably a large and heavy one.
  2. Make sure your computer is slow enough that the scrolling motion of the
page lags appreciably behind the scrolling commands of your mouse wheel.
  3. Stop rolling the wheel and while the page is still scrolling, press Ctrl.
This causes Firefox to zoom the page.

I guess maybe setting up DPMS got broken in the process of migration to Mir

In addition, Nautilus crashes if moving multiple files at once if the
.desktop file contains certain types of URLs.

Steps to reproduce crash:

  * save this as test.desktop on the Ubuntu desktop:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=test
Type=Link
URL=https://www.google.com/contacts/?hl=en&tab=mC#contacts/group/40/Directory
Icon=text-html
Name[en_US]=test

  * create an empty directory on the Ubuntu desktop
  * use the mouse to draw a box around these two icons and then move them
together to another place on the desktop

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses

2015-03-13 Thread bitinerant
Whether this is a bug or feature request, I don't know, but to be sure,
it is possible to do this with a .conf file and "sudo service openvpn
start" and not possible to do it via network-manager-openvpn (unless you
count disabling dnsmasq--I'm curious what side effects this has). As
described in the original report, I have verified that these lines in a
.conf file allow the server to configure DNS (as long as the server
pushes 3 or more DNS servers):

  script-security 2
  up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf
  down /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf

but network-manager-openvpn does not support the 'up' and 'down'.

This same issue was addressed here:

  http://askubuntu.com/questions/519920/how-to-run-an-up-script-using-
network-manager-openvpn

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 803348] Re: In Firefox, scrolling and then pressing Ctrl causes zoom

2015-03-14 Thread bitinerant
This issue is not limited to Firefox or even the control key. When
scrolling and then coasting in one application and then using alt-tab to
switch to another application, often the coasting continues.

For example, begin scrolling a long web page in Firefox and let it
coast. While it is still coasting, press alt-tab but don't release the
alt key. Every time I do this, the highlighted application in the
application switcher 'coasts' right or left (depending on whether I am
coasting up or down) and then slowly stops after a couple of seconds.

Here is another (less reproducible) example. I began scrolling and
coasting in Terminator, then pressed alt-tab to switch to Image Viewer
(eog) and the picture I had open zoomed out, which is the 'scroll down'
action in Image Viewer.

Perhaps what I am describing is a different bug, but if so, I it seems
closely connected. The way coasting is done seems fragile. It might be
that the fix is simply to stop coasting when any key is pressed, or it
might be a lot more complicated than this.

Title:
In Firefox, scrolling and then pressing Ctrl causes zoom

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1211110] Re: network manager openvpn dns push data not updating system DNS addresses

2015-03-17 Thread bitinerant
Actually, I'd like to retract part of what I said above. Via tcpdump, I
was able to confirm that --push on the server for "dhcp-option DNS ..."
and "redirect-gateway" ARE ACTUALLY WORKING, though the changes are not
visible in /etc/resolv.conf. Rather, they are updated in dnsmasq and
resolv.conf points to dnsmasq. (I don't think the "def1" flag for
"redirect-gateway" works.)

In my view, two things are needed: (1) a documented way to view the
list of DNS servers within Network Manager's dnsmasq so folks here can
watch what is happening without tcpdump, and (2) support for "dhcp-
option DNS ..." and "redirect-gateway" on the client (not just options
pushed from the server). The first item seems more important and should
be much easier.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 782406] Re: LibreOffice Writer Document Compare (regression)

2016-04-14 Thread bitinerant
Maybe I'm missing something, but this seems like a huge deal and still
an issue in LibreOffice (4.2.8.2 on Ubuntu 14.04). I have tried
variations of this procedure many times, always with the same result.
The two texts differ in a few minor places.

To reproduce:

  * open Writer
  * copy text 1 from another application and paste into Write via Edit > Paste
Special > Unformatted Text
  * save and close
  * open a new Writer document and repeat the above with text 2
  * open document 1
  * click Edit > Compare Document and choose document 2
  * expected result: a few small insertions and deletions representing the
differences between the texts
  * result: one huge insertion and one huge deletion

Why is this marked "won't fix"?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1224732] Re: Custom keyboard shortcuts don't work

2015-06-08 Thread bitinerant
This problem has been bugging me for a very long time--custom and media
keyboard shortcuts occasionally not working; logging out and back in
usually fixes it. Comment #63 fixed it for me immediately (did not have
to log out). :-) To be clear, I ran CompizConfig (search for ccsm) and,
under the "General" category, unchecked the checkbox next to "Commands".
What's more, this same procedure fixed the PrintScreen button on another
computer (both Ubuntu 14.04.2). I have not tried re-enabling CCSM
Commands.

Update to comment #66: Turning ccsm Commands off (comment #63) was not

Commands on and then back off restored my shortcuts for now (no log-out
required), although last time I did this on two separate machines, they
both crashed within a day--not sure if there is a connection.
