[jira] Updated: (GERONIMO-4398) Server should not fail to startup if application fails to start up

IMO if implemented this needs to be configurable policy rather than hardcoded
behavior. At the opposite extreme, in my experience tomcat provides no
indicate that an app didn't start when you deploy it, so its pretty hard to
know you should take action.

If you've assembled a custom server, you may well want it to shut down if it
can't start completely. The lack of distinction between server plugins and
application plugins means you would need some way to distinguish "port 1099
isn't available, this server wont be manageable or possible to shut down" from
"my experimental app couldn't find its config file and threw an exception".

> We have some code to imitate the DissociatableManagedConnection to avoid
> connection leaks that proxies connections from the supplied
> ManagedConnectionFactory: the proxy implements all the interfaces of the
> connection, but not the class itself. However, there's nothing stopping the
> ConnectionFactory from casting the (now proxied) connection to the
> implementation class it expects.
> The TxConnect project at sourceforge illustrates this approach in the
> EisConnectionFactory.
> One possible solution would be to have a flag to turn on this proxying
> behavior. I don't immediately see a way to detect if the problem will occur.

Building openejb didn't change the result on my system. I'm not sure
why we are seeing different results.

No, I didn't build openejb so perhaps that is the difference. I'll give

IIRC I built xbean, openejb, and then geronimo without problems. Did
you build openejb?

Is there any documentation about how these builds work? A short

would be great.
Do we also run builds on the tck machines? Are the results there
accessible to, well, me?

[jira] Updated: (GERONIMO-4222) Database pool unusable after database unavailable for awhile

2009-05-28 Thread David Jencks (JIRA)

 [

David Jencks updated GERONIMO-4222:
---

Fix Version/s: (was: 2.1.5)
   (was: 2.2)
   Wish List

If someone were to investigate this issue they need to look into whether some
of these are not working:

- in geronimo connection management, if a fatal error occurs then the managed
connection should get destroyed and removed from the pool. The user app will
get an exception, and it should do something to deal with it. For instance, it
could ask the user to retry later, or it could try again with a new connection.

- The tranql postgres wrapper needs to tell geronimo that a fatal error
occurred by calling (IIIRC) a connectionErrorOccurred with an event. If this
is not happening then the tranql wrapper needs to be taught how to recognize
fatal errors.

-- Note also that anyone using the generic wrapper wont get very reasonable
behavior because there is no standard way to tell that an SQLException means
the connection is dead.

I don't see anyone fixing this right now so it wont be in 2.2

No, I didn't build openejb so perhaps that is the difference. I'll give
it a try. If it works I guess it would be helpful to get a new snapshot
of openejb published.

Re: [BUILD] trunk: Failed for Revision: 779702

2009-05-28 Thread Joe Bohn
I'm hitting this same failure on my mac. Perhaps you have something
different in your local repo ... perhaps an older private build of
xbean? I hit it after updating xbean trunk, rebuilding xbean, and then
rebuilding Geronimo. Mine shows that xbean-finder is no longer a
dependency of the client plugin.

[WS-Security] JAXWS webservice client without using cxf specific apis

2009-05-28 Thread rahul.soa
Hello Devs,

I am new for ws-security and working towards my gsoc project (aim is to
enable CXF/axis2 ws-security support in Apache geronimo). I am working for
CXF first and have build geronimo with CXF ws-security jar files.

So I need a jaxws web service client sample to access my secure web service
deployed on tomcat.

I have developed a working version of client (invoking a secure web service
with UserToken) using some cxf specific apis, the code is given below

Is there any way if I can develop the jaxws client with ws-security support
without using cxf specific apis like org.apache.cxf.endpoint.Client and
org.apache.cxf.frontend.ClientProxy etc? (as I want to integrate only
ws-security jars in CXF)

Is there any sample code available for the same?

[jira] Created: (GERONIMO-4660) warning message if no WEB-INF/web.xml file is found during war

2009-05-28 Thread Kevan Miller (JIRA)
warning message if no WEB-INF/web.xml file is found during war
---

 Key: GERONIMO-4660
 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/GERONIMO-4660
 Project: Geronimo
  Issue Type: Improvement
  Security Level: public (Regular issues)
  Components: deployment
Affects Versions: 2.1.4
Reporter: Kevan Miller
 Fix For: 2.2

Currently, we'll print a warning message, if we don't find a
WEB-INF/geronimo-web.xml file (and a deployment plan was not specified
separately).

I think it would be useful to print a warning message if we don't find a
WEB-INF/web.xml file. It's not required. However, it's pretty likely that that
we're processing a badly formatted war file...

> Presently PlanCreator uses a set of ConfigData classes which basically wrap
> around xmlbean classes to create the deployment plans. These classes are
> exposed to DWR through EARHelper. As a result, a lot of code needs to be
> written to transfer data between multiple formats, ie from JSON to Java
> objects to XML.
> The idea is to use DWR to expose JAXB classes directly so that the xml can be
> generated using calls directly from the javascript, eliminating the
> ConfigData and EARHelper classes. This will ease the process of generating
> deployment plans, like that used by GEP.

> . The Monitoring Console (MC) should display TimeStatistics and
> BoundedRangeStatistics as a single value.
> For example JVM Heap or RequestTime or openConnections with a single

> . A band-aid solution to displaying TimeStatistics and
> BoundedRangeStatistics, and RangeStatistics is to add a field
> 'StatisticsType' to activeDB.
> and graph 'totalTime/count' for Timestatistics and 'current' for
> BoundedRangeStatistics, RangeStatistics.
> . The graph builder recomputes min, max and avg. It is wasteful but

2.2 jiras triage

2009-05-28 Thread David Jencks
I've started going through the jiras assigned to 2.2 and dealing with
them as I think appropriate. Mostly this involves setting fixVersion
to "wish list" for stuff no one is working on now and doesn't seem
show-stopping to me.

Please take a look yourself and also check the mail from these changes
to see if you disagree or have additional comments or want to provide
a patch.

Although I think you are right that its redundant I'm really not inclined to

others will become inspired and want to help :-)

1. upgrade to maven 2.1

I would "pause" on this. You cannot do releases with 2.1 as the
gpg plugin
doesn't work with it. We're still "discussing" what to do about
it. 2.0.10
is OK and a fix is in place for 2.2, but I'm not sure if the fix is
going to

be pulled back into 2.1.x.

Thanks for the heads-up. Assuming maven 2.2 doesn't beat g 2.2 we'll
go with m 2.0.10, Seems to be working OK so far

Dan

2. upgrade to latest apache pom (6?)
3. upgrade to latest assembly plugin to help with source distros (I
don't think it's released yet)
4. reexamine genesis and trim it (probably means genesis 2)
5. use the release plugin
6. get all our private dependencies into maven central. This
probably

means releasing with our groupId unless we can get the projects to do
a release

7. When we deploy, write the plan into the plugin something like the
car-maven-plugin does. Same with the default geronimo-plugin.xml
(GERONIMO-4628)
8. We need some way to override/configure/set javaee env-entry values
from something other than the original spec dd or annotation
(GERONIMO-4630)

9. In the console, provide a uniform way to completely specify the
artfiact ID for a plan being created. Save the groupId and version
as

config-substitutions or something persistent.
10. Provide a way to edit artifact-aliases in the console. Include a
way to specify artifact-alias when installing a jar.

thanks
david jencks

This seems unlikely to me and I won't have time to set up an example
to reproduce this problem very soon. In order to quickly rule out
some obvious problems could you tell us exactly how you are deploying
the app and specifying the plans? If you can share your app and plans
that would be even better.

[jira] Commented: (GERONIMO-4630) Need good ways to override env-entry values in jndi

David Jencks commented on GERONIMO-4630:

I agree that we should provide the same services for context-param elements. I
don't insist that that be implemented with this jira since we may need a
different mechansim -- jnddi references may not work.

For me exposing any of this in the console or providing a redeploy migration
assistant, while very good ideas, are out of scope for this jira.

Jürgen Weber commented on GERONIMO-4630:

Ideally, you would browse with the console to the application, click on it, the
application plans would open and you could change env-entry values.

On redeploying the application Geronimo should check, if there are overridden
parameters, should inform the user and let the user decide, if the overriding
parameters should be kept or thrown away. In the latter case Geronimo should
offer a plan snippet containing the changed parameters.

I would "pause" on this. You cannot do releases with 2.1 as the gpg plugin
doesn't work with it. We're still "discussing" what to do about it. 2.0.10
is OK and a fix is in place for 2.2, but I'm not sure if the fix is going to
be pulled back into 2.1.x.

One EAR file, two application instances with two deployment plans

2009-05-28 Thread iTob

hey guys,
i just want to deploy one EAR-File with two different deployment plans.
however, i get the following problem, even if i change the groupId,
artifactId,... in the environment and in the modules of the deployment plan,
when i deploy the EAR with the second deployment plan (after deploying with
the first one):

"Application cannot be deployed as it contains deployment ids which are in
use"

but the ids are completely unique in my deployment plan

Does anybody know how to fix that problem???
