proton-c release and Go binding updates

2017-10-19 Thread Robbie Gemmell
I've come to realise that people using the proton-c Go binding via 'go
get' can be making direct use of the content from the "go1" branch of
the proton repository. Some updates were just pushed to the branch
bringing it up to date with master, effectively 0.18.0 rc1 from
yesterday plus some cosmetic changes like comments and clarified
parameter names. Since 0.18.0 is still under vote this shouldnt be the
case if the go1 branch contents are so directly related to what a
regular Go user ends up using (i.e not someone following development
and deliberately aiming to use development content). If thats the
case, then the branch needs to hold the content of a release and only
be updated after an associated release vote has passed.

There is a defect in the implementation of the basic.nack AMQP 0-91 extension.
If the requeue argument is false and the queue has a maximum delivery count
set, the message is currently not released for delivery to other consumers.
This will cause messages to accumulate on the queue in an acquired state.

I just meant establishing whether any matching changes are actually
needed on other bits rather than actually doing them if there are
(some tangential discussion suggests it might not be). We'd obviously
want to avoid breaking things by only changing some bits at a
particular time and not others if they do need it.

I'm happy to spin a release almost any time I'm actually around and
not on holiday hehe. If theres demand for something and its considered
ready then it can generally be released quickly.

Re: Next Qpid JMS (0.24.0) / Proton-J (0.20.0) release dates?

2017-06-30 Thread Keith W
Thanks Robbie.

I'm planning for us to take a look at both the Proton-J change and
Qpid JMS Client next month (I was the original contributor if the Qpid
JMS Client SCRAM SHA module, after all) , so except to see some
patches from us on the reviewboard for comment. I don't think we'll
be able to take on corresponding changes for Proton-C (my C skills are
17 years rusty), so we'll have to leave those to others.

For the Proton-J change and Qpid JMS Client releases, we don't need
these changes urgently, so I was hoping to piggyback if there is a
release due in the next four to six weeks, otherwise we might push
things forward ourselves.

Nothing specific no, except not next week due to holidays etc (unless
others feel like doing a release...). Essentially they are mostly
released whenever theres something interesting enough ready or it
seems too long otherwise.

Perhaps also including checking the interaction with Dispatch, the c++
broker, and proton-c plus bindings when using Cyrus, etc.

I looked at Rob's patch on
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/PROTON-1486 previously and
mentioned to him it seems like it will work (tests might show :P)
though I was hesitant whether it would be better to expose the value
explicitly than feeding it though the same API+fields as the
challenge/response. I did agree the things that might not work
shouldnt really happen and are mostly already an issue regardless
though.

I haven't looked at the client side yet to see whats needed there.
Perhaps folks that wrote those/related bits might have a better idea?

Next Qpid JMS (0.24.0) / Proton-J (0.20.0) release dates?

2017-06-29 Thread Keith W
Hello,

Are there release dates in mind for Proton-J (0.20.0) and Qpid JMS (0.24.0)?

We are moving towards a Qpid Broker J major release next quarter. The
release backlog includes QPID-7787 [1] which will utilise the AMQP 1.0
additional data field of the SASL outcome [2]. In order to be useful
end to end, this will need a corresponding change in the Qpid JMS
Client, QPIDJMS-294 [3], and a Proton J change to expose the data [4].

I want to understand the schedule so we can ensure the work on those
JIRAs is ready for consideration/inclusion.

cheers, Keith.

[jira] [Commented] (QPID-7755) add release scripts for qpid-broker-j and qpid-jms-amqp-0-x

I added partial release scripts for these components in
https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf?p=qpid-site.git;a=commit;h=32dce6b5abda356a9d4061692a09cf88329a2fb8
 .

Some notes:

 - There are still a few instances of java-broker that need to be cleaned up.
 - Some of the logic for doc generation remains to be ported from the old
scripts (which I didn't delete yet).
 - I went with "Qpid Broker-J", with a hyphen, in titles and text. That's
precedent from Proton-J. I personally like it better without the hyphen.
That's your call, of course.

 Fix For: qpid-java-client-0-x-6.3.0, qpid-java-broker-7.0.0

The qpid-site repository contains scripts for generating release pages.
After separation of java broker and client and the migration from svn to git we
need to create new scripts (or update the old ones).
This needs to happen before/as part of the next release.

> In the current WinSDK the \bin directory has become overloaded and difficult
> to use.
> The directory currently holds:
> * Boost (debug and release)
> * Qpid libraries (debug and release)
> * MSVC runtime (release)
> * .NET Messaging Binding libraries (debug)
> A user may:
> 1. To Compile/Run Debug
>  1a. C++ - Load the project and go
> 1b. .NET - Load the project and go.
> 2. To Compile/Run Release
> 2a. C++ - Load the project, flip the settings, and go
> 2b. .NET - Unpack the release libraries from zip, load the project, flip
> settings and references, and go
> After building the examples the \bin directory has 78 files in it.
> As a developer this isn't really that bad. But for a new user it gets harder
> to explain, particularly for the .NET examples. Between debug and release,
> C++ (.vcproj) projects have a simple way to specify differently-named
> libraries and differently named output files. .NET (.csproj) projects are not
> so simple: changing the names of a dependent library involve removing a
> reference and adding a references to the new file, and there is no great way
> at all to change the name of an output file.
> Currently the bld-winsdk procedure produces two zip files, one each for x86
> and x64 platforms. I propose to change the build to produce four zip files:
> x86-debug, x86-release, x64-debug, and x64-release. This has advantages and
> disadvantages:
> Advantages:
> * Each \bin directory is smaller and more easily understood
> * The directory arrangement prevents a user from mixing libraries from
> incompatible (debug vs release) component builds.
> * Customer's will have an easier time copying the kit's basic binary
> distribution as the debug and release parts are separate, and
> * Customer will not have to unzip and manage debug and release versions of a
> files that share the same name.
> * Kit consumers have already asked for this.
> Disadvantages:
> * There will be extra copies of identical example source files and project
> setting files.
> Implementing this will involve NO CHANGE to the qpid messaging library
> compile settings, minor changes to the .NET binding settings, and some
> moderate hacking in the bld-winsdk.ps1 script.

> This JIRA is created to track the release activities for qpid-java-6.0.
> Here is the list of tasks I came so far to perform the release:
> # Ran RAT report and verify that all required files contain license header.
> Raise JIRA and resolve all unlicensed files.
> # Check JIRA for any remaining uncompleted JIRAs for qpid-java-6.0 and notify
> owners about closing the JIRAs before the release.
> # Send an email into dev list about release and tentative dates for
> alpha/beta/rc/release
> # Produce alpha and send an email about alpha availability for testing
> # Produce beta and send an email about beta availability for testing
> # Produce and sign RC and send an email about RC availability for testing
> ## Repeat above if blockers and critical issues requiring fixing are found
> # Initiate release voting by sending email into the dev list
> # Complete voting and when release is approved produce and sign final build
> # Publish release and update web site
> # Send a notification email about release availability
> The steps above are tentative. They could be changed or extended if required
> whilst performing the release activity.

> Release signing is covered in
> [here|http://www.apache.org/dev/release-signing.html]
> It seems I need to set up pgp to sign the release. I need to do some research
> how to do that.
> Producing release artifacts with maven would require performing the following
> steps:
> # mvn release:prepare (updates versions, creates the branch, updates
> versions again)
> # mvn release:perform (performs release, publishing to Nexus staging area)
> # close Nexus staging repo
> # upload source release artifacts to svn dist dev repo (after downloading
> them from Nexus)
> # release Nexus staging repo (after voting)
> # add artifacts to svn dist release repo (after voting)

PROTON-1376: Serialize re-construction of generated files for Windows

Windows builds wrongly regenerate files for libraries qpid-proton and
qpid-proton-core. Regeneration creates file churn that sometimes
breaks builds. This patch introduces a phony dependency so that
the generated file reconstruction does not cause a problem.

Thanks for investigating this - I have run into this issue as a sporadic
windows only build failure, and didn't realise it was because the
generated_c_files target is being run multiple times.

I can't say I much like the false dependency solution, but if it works then I'm
ok with committing it with a comment that it is only there to force a
particular build order on Windows.

Making qpid-proton depend on qpid-proton-core dodges the issue.
