Hey there

 I've noticed that mk-build-deps seems to call plain apt-get when
 installing build-deps, so it's likely to install more packages than
 needed.  I personally use this:

--- ~/.devscripts ---
MKBUILDDEPS_TOOL="aptitude -R"

 Perhaps this should be advertized in the man page, but probably the
 default should be changed from apt-get to "apt-get
 --no-install-recommends".

   Thanks

Hi,

dch --increment is documented as

   --increment, -i
  Increment either the final component of the Debian release num‐
  ber or, if this is a native Debian package, the version number.
  This creates a new section at the beginning of the changelog
  with  appropriate  headers  and footers.

This behavior has recently changed:

[62/557]mh@salida:~/tmp$ cat debian/control
Package: package
[63/558]mh@salida:~/tmp$ cat debian/changelog
package (1.0-1) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

  * Initial release. (Closes: #XX)

 -- Marc Haber   Tue, 22 May 2012 12:34:31
+0200
[64/559]mh@salida:~/tmp$ dch --increment
Use of uninitialized value $_ in string eq at /usr/bin/dch line 764.
[65/560]mh@salida:~/tmp$ cat debian/changelog
package (1.0-2) UNRELEASED; urgency=low

  * Initial release. (Closes: #XX)
  *

 -- Marc Haber   Tue, 22 May 2012 12:36:19
+0200
[66/561]mh@salida:~/tmp$

I would have expected dch to leave the changelog entry for version
1.0-1 intact while creating a new one for 1.0-2

Greetings
Marc

packages generated by mk-build-deps use equivs' default README template,
which is tailored to typical hackish equivs builds which are used as
make-believe packages. to quote from it:

Please note that this is a crude hack and if thoughtlessly used
might possibly do damage to your packaging system. And please
note as well that using it is not the recommended way of dealing
with broken dependencies. Better file a bug report instead.

this warning does not apply to mk-build-deps built packages at all, and
will confuse users who are not aware of how it comes together.

as a remedy, mk-build-deps can ship its own README template and instruct
equivs to use it, a single-line patch to the script is attached. the
template can be installed in a static location, as equivs already has
facilities to fill in @-escaped templates.

for the contents of /usr/share/devscripts/mk-build-deps/README.template,
i'd suggest the following:

@packagename@ for Debian

This package has the sole purpose of installing packages required for
building the Debian package indicated by its name; it does so by
depending on these packages:

@depends@

It was generated by the mk-build-deps program from the information in
the Build-Depends field(s) of the source package's debian/control file.

@packagename@ can be safely removed after the package it was created for
is built. If that breaks anything, a dependency is missing in the
package's Depends field.

dch's NMU detection triggers easily for uploads of orphaned packages,
which are not NMUable by definition.

Attached patch should fix that. (One can still create a impossible
NMU by giving --nmu explicitly, but I'd say that is then the fault
of the person calling it that way).

Hi.

I'm trying :
$ bts clone 668547 -1, retitle -1 "wifi disconnects too often", submitter -1
whoe...@example.com
and gets the following response :
bts clone: new IDs must be negative numbers

Uh... -1 isn't recognized as negative number, it seems.

Hope this helps.

Right, from bts(1)

It is
   important the dot/comma is surrounded by whitespace so it is not

"dpkg-depcheck -b" (and thus dpkg-genbuilddeps) is not working on my system
with some (few) multi-arch (foreign) packages, especially 2 versions of zlib1g:

tim@rohan:~/src/deb$ dpkg-depcheck -b sleep 1

Repacking a bzip2-compressed tarball (did not try other archive types
yet) leaves a file whose name starts with "GLOB(0x" behind, apparently
the one created by tempfile().

To reproduce that, run the following:

$ debcheckout xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
$ uscan --force-download --repack

In case you use --verbose the next parameter will be treated as filename.
Especially if you want to use --keyring as well, the script does not work
anymore.
The attached patch just adds a 'next;' statement in the '--verbose' case
to proceed with parameter parsing.

Package: devscripts
Version: 2.11.9
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/bin/bts

I've just closed a bunch of bugs using "bts done N version" which mails a
close command to control@. However as noted on
http://www.debian.org/Bugs/server-control#close this is deprecated and
N-done@ is prefered (because it mails the submitter too).

It would also be worth mentioning this in the manpage section about the done
command.

"bts done …" also mails the submitter. That's why the command is called done
and not close (which is still available and undocumented because it solely
mails control@).

getbuildlog takes a version pattern:

$ getbuildlog
Usage: getbuildlog  []
[]
[...]
Examples:
  # Download amd64 build log for hello version 2.2-1:
  getbuildlog hello 2\.2-1 amd64

You need to specify a pattern:

$ getbuildlog 'mpg123 1\.14\.2\+svn20120622-1'

Feel free to reopen the bug if you want a different behavior of
getbuildlog.

Hi,

considering a tuplet for which several logs are available, getbuildlog
downloads them all but with a fixed filename (through wget -O) so the
last downloaded log wins. Adding -nc doesn't help with -O, which is
basically another way to write a shell redirection. You'll find attached
a patch to fix this by mimicking wget's behaviour is non-“-O” situation:
using filename.1, filename.2, etc.

If you need an example: debian-installer 20120712 mipsel

https://buildd.debian.org/status/logs.php?pkg=debian-installer&ver=20120712&arch=mipsel

The other attached patch fixes the missing +x bit in the repository.

Mraw,
KiBi.

Hello,

I attach a new version of licensecheck with a --machine option that outputs
a machine readable version, so that one can sort and/or filter the files
based on license and copyright.

This option is important because I think that most software have a leading
license and copyright owner, but possibly has "hidden in the corners" some
other licenses and copyright owners on which a packager needs to be able
to concentrate.

An example, in order to package Knopflerfish, I would now be able to use
a command like:

licensecheck -r --copyright --machine . | sort -k2,3 -t'' | \
awk -F'' '($2 ~ "^BSD .3" && $3 ~ "KNOPFLERFISH") || ($2 ~ "Apache
.v2" && $3 ~ "OSGi") {next} {print}'
(the spaces after the -t and -F options represent obviously tabs)

in order to filter out all obvious license / copyright owner combinations
and concentrate on the remaining ones.

I think my patch would also allow to close the Bug #552192, but I leave
it to you to decide.

Thanks, Eric

As of devscripts 2.10.69+squeeze2 in squeeze and (judging from the
changelog) 2.11.4 in sid, debdiff returns an exit code 1 when it finds
no differences between binary packages.

Note that this is a regression in squeeze, and breaks scripts relying on
the debdiff exit code.

Trivial patch is attached.

Nikolaus

Subject: [PATCH] Fix debdiff exit code (regression)

Commit 9cbe605 "debdiff: fix CVE-2012-2012 [...]" broke the exit code of
debdiff, at it made wdiff_control_files return 1 if wdiff found no
differences in the control files, which in turn made debdiff exit with an
exit code of 1.

Hello Devscripts Devel Team,
thanks for maintaining and developing this collection of useful tools!

I noticed that licensecheck seems to be unable to recognize licenses in
(fixed-form) Fortran code.

Here's a minimal test case to reproduce the bug:

As it can be seen, licensecheck correctly detects the 2-clause BSD license
in C code comments, while it fails to recognize the same exact license in
Fortran code comments.

I hope that fixing this issue is not too hard and may be done soon
(through an upload to experimental, since I don't expect behavioral changes
in unstable or testing during a freeze...).

Thanks for your time!

Hi,

A specially crafter .changes or .dsc file can trigger an infinite loop in
dget. Due to system resource limits, it will usually be broken without
incurring into a real DoS.

Attached patch fixes it.

Cheers,

Package: devscripts
Version: 2.12.3
Severity: important
Usertags: serious

I had a script which did more or less this:

$ dcmd cp -v devscripts_2.12.3.dsc /another/dir
cp: cannot stat `-v': No such file or directory

As you can see, it no longer works. This is because dcmd passes "--" as
the first argument to the command:

$ dcmd echo devscripts_2.12.3.dsc
-- devscripts_2.12.3.tar.gz devscripts_2.12.3.dsc

This behavior is undocumented and not backwards-compatible. Please
revert this change.

Package: devscripts
Version: 2.12.3
Severity: wishlist

As of a few days ago, it is possible to upload signed command files to
ftp-master, granting/revoking DM upload permissions, as originally
explained by Ansgar Burchardt on -project@ in June:
 https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2012/06/msg00321.html

In an attempt to make constructing and uploading such files easier, I
wrote a little tool called "Ye Olde Debian Archive Control Kit"
(yodack)[1]. It's a simple shell script with a conffile, a separate
package for it is overkill, therefore I'd like to ask for its inclusion
into devscripts.

If the tool is deemed worthy for devscripts, I'll happily prepare a
patch against devscripts git that does the necessary things to pull
yodack in.

As an example of what the tool can do, the following line does just what
it reads:

$ yodack on ftp-master.debian.org, \
 for debian maintainer alger...@madhouse-project.org, \
 please grant upload rights on dh-exec, ivykis, \
 but deny uploads of eglibc, bash.

Thanks for considering!

Turns out that there's another tool in the works, with similar
intentions to yodack: replacing dcut & dput aswell as providing an
interface to generating .dak-commands.

Difference is, dputng is closer to that goal than yodack, and will be a
separate package.

I don't see the point in having two tools that do essentially the same
thing, and since yodack's the inferior one, lets not split effort: I'm
closing this wishlist.

Package: devscripts
Version: 2.12.4
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Apologies if this is not exactly the right place, I have delivered
my concerns to menu-xdg about problems concerning dragNdropping
menu items to the desktop-- and some of these shortcuts were failing
(notably libreoffice and xfce items)

This is actually the first time I would be concerned at this, but
there's more than one package where this dragNdrop operation has lead
me to wonder if this can be due to the way debian policy is set out
for menu items.

Reason being is I have a package maintainer claiming the +x execute
bit is not necessary for .desktop links to work but eventually that
package maintainer witnesses a video I posted on how to "enable"
desktop shortcuts from gnome-classic.. and that the +x is actually
a requirement.
(This package maintainer did not know that
desktop shortcut links can be made from the menu in gnome-classic,
after a toggle in Systemtools/preferences/advancedsettings needs to
be enabled first)

I posted this message here because even after a couple of responses
from this package maintainer, they still think +x is not needed
in order for .desktop links to work.. and since some of you from this
package team are closer to debian policy knowledge than others,
I thought i might raise either an issue or concern that
there's possibly a bug or policy conflict about how .desktop shortcuts
should be handled from the desktop?
( I noticed the devscripts package description mentions something
about .desktop skeleton so it encouraged me to file something here )

I'm not familiar with any debian policy of how .desktop files are
to be handled, but if this package maintainer insists +x isn't needed
for .desktop files on the desktop then something is really wrong
because I can illustrate very clearly from the following two videos that
a successful dragNdrop results with +x, taking all +x bit away changes
the desktop icon to a nonfunctional one..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxN-yDuCTus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57HvGS3Gdmo

(I've delivered a bug report to menu-xdg, but feel there may be another party
interested in seeing why more than 1 package is failing to make proper
..desktop files on the desktop and more towards a debian policy thing-- but
I'm not familiar about debian policies and perhaps somebody here would see
if the problem exists below menu-xdg)
(trivia matter atm-- bugreported also to libreoffice and xfce, so i bug
reported to other certain parties in due respect)

Thank you for any feedback.. again I apologize if this is more of a
nuissance than of any help.. I'm trying to get to the bottom of this..
