[DDN] Podcasting from the Scottish Learning Festival

2005-09-21 Thread Andy Carvin
Hi everyone,

Right now I'm at the Scottish Learning Festival, sitting with a group of
several thousand Scottish educators in the plenary room awaiting a speech by
Mark Prensky. I've just posted several podcasts to my blog, including a
presentation about media literacy by Robin Blake of OFCOM, the UK telecom
regulatory authority. There's also a podcast and powerpoint of my presentation
last hour, about the history of online communities and the growth of
participatory online media. And no trip to Scotland would be complete without a
brief podcast of a girls' chorus singing in Gaelic.

You can find it all here: http://www.andycarvin.com

RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/carvin

I hope to post a podcast of Mark Prensky's keynote as well. Stay tuned. -andy

RE: [DDN] Virtual conferences

2005-09-21 Thread John Hibbs
I'm exceptionally proud that our teeny, weeny non-profit has held
eight Global Learn Day events, one each year since 1996. GLD, a non
stop 24 hour event, opens in the South Pacific and travels west to
Hawaii, the long way around. We make stops in eight major regions
where we feature outstanding people doing highly innovative work,
mostly in distance education, but also in health training,
e-democracy and social justice. We use everything but two tin cans
tied to a string, including community radio, one of the most ignored
elements in the communication network, and one of the most important.
(We also use ham radio to bring in voices from Antarctica and other
truly remote areas.)

But, this year, we will NOT hold Global Learn Day...(taking a year
off is good for the soul).

HOWEVER, we are watching -- and will participate -- with Webheads,
the most innovative, far reaching, truly global enterprise in the
whole of the English language training world. They are doing a much,
much, much better job organizing for their (global) event than we
ever did for Global Learn Day, so we are learning a LOT.

I encourage subscribers here to plan on attending this exceptional
conference. No, belay, that...I believe many DDN subscribers might
wish to submit proposals, particularly about how to improve virtual
conferences and increase impact. The Webheads conference is not just
about verbs and pronouns; in fact what it is really about, I say, is
connecting those doing innovative work of a kind likely to make for a
safer, saner planet.

We've held 3 econferences since May 2004.

[DDN] update: volunteer managers Hurricane Katrina

2005-09-21 Thread J Cravens
The resource for managers of volunteers involved in Hurricane
Katrina-related efforts is ever-growing at www.volunteertoday.com,
and even FEMA has now been in contact with the organizers to find an
experienced volunteer manager ready for immediate placement in one
site -- and this request was filled immediately, thanks to the
organizers' database which they are calling Manager of Volunteers
Respite Corps, a list of such volunteer managers, with the
experience and resources needed for immediate placement.

For any managers of volunteers who are involved in Hurricane Katrina
efforts and are overwhelmed, needing assistance from other volunteer
managers, or needing replacements for such managers running on empty,
please visit www.volunteertoday.com and contact the site manager --
they can help take care of your needs immediately. Please forward
this email to anyone who might need experienced volunteer managers
(this includes people with experience in tech-related initiatives --
and if you have such specialized experience and can help, visit the
site as well and contact the organizers).

This database of resources for volunteer managers in
disaster-relief-recovery efforts is an entirely volunteer effort,
with contributions by volunteer managers all over the USA and Canada.
It's being managed by Nancy MacDuff.
