Reply-all is fine as long as you're using mailman (mailman is smart
enough to not send two copies to Greg and Jerry; majordart and other
inferior mailing-list managers are not).

Reply-List is nice, but as long as the client has both Reply-Sender &
Reply-All, I can live with it.

Here at $DayJob, that's the two buttons Outlook provides, same as Gmail.

Yeah, it would be nice if I had a third button to not sent Greg and Jerry an
extra copy (as I likely will "forget" to take the time to drag&drop Discuss
from Cc to To, and drop Jerry and Greg direct, as I would do if I had old

Yeah, Google's excuse is they have to be at least as functional as Outleak. :-(

If enough of us request Reply-List on their feedback pages, maybe they'll add
it.

Any such argument will be pointless. This list has been in operation
for 17 years now, and the argument was settled long ago.

Basically, most list members expressed no preference. The tiny minority
that did express a preference was split roughly 50-50, and both sides
generally seemed to feel that their way was the One True Way and that
only a drooling moron could possibly disagree with their side.

There are solid arguments for both sides, so it cannot be resolved
on technical grounds. And voting on the question would not resolve
anything, it would either change nothing, or merely swap which half of
the tiny minority was unhappy.

Actually, that's not entirely accurate. Arbitrarily changing the list behavior
any time someone wanted a new vote would be disruptive to the
silent majority that don't care which way it's set but who expect the
list to behave consistently.

So if you want to argue your case on the Reply-To matter, you should
know that at best, your argument will be ignored by the list admins.
We consider the matter to be closed.

No, that is not what Greg is talking about.
For instance on Thunderbird, when I get email from a listserv, I have an
extra "reply list" button. I also know that claws has this feature also.
The client detects the email is from a listserv and sets up that buttoin
automatically. it has nothing to do with how the list admin sets the
reply header.

"Reply" should reply to the original sender, not to the list. That is
what the "Reply-to-List" and "Reply-All" functionality is for.

Gmail is behaving correctly. The reply-to header is set by the
mailing list administrator, and should be obeyed by the mail client.
If you want this list to reply to list by default, feel free to argue
your case here but be warned that this topic is almost always a sticky
morass of flames, dogma and other unpleasantness.
