Re: [slim] For the $2000 Transporter, are Slim Devices serious about the user interface?
As to the web browser interface, of course clarkc is right. As to the main SB interface, it is intuitive and handy, but of course clarkc is right that the Sonos is much more polished. (And of course he's right that the well, then buy a Sonos attitude is a typical response on this board.) [slim] Re: Robocopy help, please
Yes, somehow the timestamps changed. . . . Are they all one hour off? See, e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS (For historical reasons, the versions of Windows that do not support NTFS all keep time internally as local zone time, and therefore so do all file systems other than NTFS that are supported by current versions of Windows. However, Windows NT and its descendants keep internal timestamps as GMT/UTC and make the appropriate conversions for display purposes. Therefore, NTFS timestamps are in GMT/UTC. This means that when files are copied or moved between NTFS and non-NTFS partitions, the OS needs to convert timestamps on the fly. But if some files are moved when summer or daylight saving local time is in effect, and other files are moved when winter or standard local time is in effect, there can be some ambiguities in the conversions. As a result, especially shortly after one of the days on which local zone time changes, users may observe that some files have timestamps that are incorrect by one hour.). -- Dave2 Dave2's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1556 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29417 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Richie Wrote: 2 SB2s work very well when synced together. I've never heard them get out of sync. The only downside is the very small gaps at the start of every track when the two players resync. Admittedly this is mainly noticeable on albums that have no gaps between the tracks, although some tracks with no gap at the start do suffer as well. At a guess, 90% of tracks are fine. Michaelwagner Wrote: I know about periodical dates but you didn't say it was a periodical date. You didn't say, for example, from the December issue, you wrote an exact date. It looked to me like a date on which the quote was said. I assumed you meant November and wrote December, or meant 2004 and wrote 2005 or something similar. Then people would be looking for the quote in the wrong place. If that was a periodical date, that clears it up. So there is no remaining confusion for forum readers: I wrote an exact date because that's the date that appears on the cover of the periodical being quoted. The citation was correct, though I agree it need not have been so terse. (Substantially the same thing, regarding creeping featurism, can now be found here: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1884539,00.asp.) Michael - I did suspect that your original post meant to mock what you thought was my error. You didn't say, for example, that you thought there was a typo; you wrote a cryptic jibe. If that was meant to assist forum readers, that clears it up. [slim] Re: Slim Devices is hiring!
I agree that the immediate emphasis should be on stability, UI, and consumer-level documentation. Thought for the day: The commercial failure of the Media Center PC and other initiatives is generally because of their increasing complexity. Any hardware or software product will, over time, incorporate new features rather than improve old features. . . . The temptation to add more and more features to a product 'creeping featurism' seems irresistible. Adding this and that is a lot easier than fixing complicated or obscure features. . . . MrC Wrote: . . . It can take a little time for open source documentation to catch up with the progress and changes in the software. . . . Your point is taken, however - the intial out of the box, setup experience could be easier. Thanks for your encouragement, though, in fairness, I think his point is a bit broader. Initial setup is not the only issue. User questions at any point still require a lengthy tour through not only the software help file but also the site's Product Info tab, Support tab, the wiki (a very slim wiki), the bug list, and the Forums. (A tremendous amount of information can be found only in the Forums; no way to tell whether it's authoritative.) I think there is agreement that that's not as it should be. Some of us would put a higher priority on this. Slim recently acknowledged that documentation is one of the top items warranting community support and participation. http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=61490postcount=1. I sympathize with the volunteer developers: It's probably more fun to add new features than to document (or stabilize) existing features for existing customers. But the reminder that this is open source software is not much comfort to the ordinary customer, as we paid hundred of dollars for hardware that cant be used properly without a good understanding of how to use the software. Thanks very much for your generous help.
