I've had just one SB3 for years. But since the announcement of the end of the product line I've bought a used Boom and a Duet as backup, and have my eye out for good deals on a new Touch. This lot should last til some viable alternative system comes onto the market - such an alternative must have a programmable API for me to use my muso product on it, and as yet it seems there's just nothing else out there. jezbo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9888 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96198 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I picked up another Touch before the prices went up after hearing of the product's demise and being unimpressed with the UE line. Really nothing like it. May set it up at my mom's as a MOG device rather than just leaving it in the box. Re: [slim] How many of you have "spare" squeezeboxes?
Apart from the SBs in use (one SB 3, one SB Boom, one SB Radio and one SB Touch) I wont be buying any spare units. As much as I hate it, the Squeezebox product is dead since the manufacturer dropped it. If for some reason my Touch (the SB in the main listening area) would die premature then I still have the option of using iPeng as an SB replacement. I concither this route as my current backup plan if disaster happens in the short term. In the longer run, I hope that there will be a valid alternative product available. Besides the fact that I still like my current SB lineup, I dont believe that investing in a dead product line is a sensible thing to do. Technology is moving very fast these days. Who knows what new technology / product will be available in the future. There is a good chance that there will be something new that would make the current SBs look and feel aged. And, Im still too pissed at Logitech to feed them anymore of my money. Well. I have 4 Transporters in use with 3 spare. 2 Radios in use with 4 spare. 4 new Receivers and 2 used but taken out of service. Several Controllers. I'm keeping the Transporters and Radios, but have begun unloading the Receivers on *bay. Prior to using Squeezboxes, I had 8 Rio Receivers in use powered by JReceiver (gawd these were primitive.) I'm extremely happy with Squeezebox (running LMS via Linux) and have no plans to replace them. Also long extinct, I have 3 cars with empeg players (also Linux powered) with a few spares - I still love those empeg players (modded w. illuminated buttons, stacked/soldered RAM chips, Hijack kernel, 500GB storage.) I have 1 Touch and 1 Radio in use. Since I was thinking about buying another Radio for quite a while now, I just bought 2 more Radios of which I'll put one aside as a spare. (BTW, Amazon.de currently offers 20% discount if you buy 2 items from a selected list of Logitech products.) But I'm in doubt whether I should buy a Touch as a spare, assuming that a Touch without any stressed mechanical parts will last much longer than a Radio with its knobs. How long do you think it can last? 5 years, 10 years or even more? In addition, a post in another thread expressed what I'm also feeling: nsfw wrote: > > From my experience this is what usually happens. Today we know that the Radios can be upgraded then, while the Touch can not. On the other side, the Touch is connected to my main HiFi, so if it really breaks one day I'll definitely need a good replacement. So I'm torn between buying or not. I have a Radio I only use when visiting my parents as well as a spare sb3 and an sb1 if it ever comes to that. I never picked up a touch, because I until recently I was running too old a server version to support it, and I really don't have room (or more specifically a room) for it. I was hoping to pick on up on the odd $210-190 sales, but it looks like I'll be paying $240 or so. I do think a bunch will start making it to the used markets as the more timid elements in the squeezosphere give up hope and probably a slew when they shutdown mysqueezebox. To me actually the only one that matters most is the boom, because it's back lighting make it the best bed side device. The rest could all be receivers or less, as long as they sync correctly and interact with the various control mechanisms. I hope it lasts a long time. sander's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10737 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96198 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I have a "backup" Controller I bought a few months back for £70, mainly because it is the most vulnerable bit of hardware due to its being handled, dropped, thrown, sat on, smeared with food and othewise abused by my young family. I bought it because I foresaw the end of Squeezebox some time back and was ready to pounce when the clearance sales hit the UK stores in May this year. It is still in its box because the Controller is obviously a lot more resilient than it looks! I am not unduly worried about my Receivers. They just sit there and work. Likewise LMS on my Synology NAS. Hopefully Logitech will make a reasonable sounding and not too expensive replacement for the Touch which I can buy as replacements for my Receivers at some point. By then I imagine the whole family will have smartphones to use instead of the Controller. I have no emotional attachment to the Squeezebox line. The only thing I need it to do is play my music library, synchronise if necessary and give me access to a couple of on-line music services. I have had my Duet with two receivers for 4 years now and I think it has more than repaid the £375 investment already. If Logitech UE offers a replacement that does those things then (if one or both Receivers stop working) I might just go with it, particularly if it stays a lot cheaper than Sonos. "Squeezebox" may be dropped as a name, but I am sure that the most important and innovative parts of its technology will live on under the UE banner - particularly if they are better than, or equal to, the Sonos alternative. For instance secure multi-room synch over Wi-Fi is simply too compelling a feature to drop. If the worst comes to the worst I will buy Sonos - although I am sure I will resent having to pay so much for inferior goods! I remember back a few years I had an Olympus 2200 camera, great little thing, state of the art at one time. It used SMC cards, and I heard somehow that these were being phased out and wouldn't be available much longer. So I found a bunch online and bought them. The camera died, and I have moved way beyond that early technology. I still have several unused SMC cards lying around, must toss them sometime soon. Then I had a *ist Pentax DSLR, which could use a set of 4 AA batteries; it also accepted CRV3 batteries (basically replaces two AAs each). I got tired of recharging my AAs and found a bunch of CRV3s online at cheap prices, and bought a bunch (not the rechargeable kind). Since then I've gone through two new Pentax DSLRs, and now have a K5. They don't use CRV3s. I have about ten or fifteen of those suckers taking up space in my utility drawer. Better safe than sorry, I guess, but I hope my SB investment doesn't end up being just as useless. R. In fact if SBR to UESR conversion is reversible, I might try the new UE system. I'm a little astonished that for all the big words from Logitech about their passion for music that they've dropped the player range to a single non-HiFi grade unit! Re: [slim] How many of you have "spare" squeezeboxes?
I have in active duty: 1 x Transporter (main device) 1 x Duet 2 x Booms 2 x Controllers (counting the one that's part of the Duet), plus the controller app for my BlackBerry tablet I have as spares: 1 x Receiver (part of a Duet, but the Controller is being used with the Transporter and Booms) 1 x Boom (still in the box, has a Europe plug but if one of my existing Booms dies I will use its plug) 1 x Touch (bought months ago, still in the box) 1 x Touch en route (bought earlier this week from TigerDirect, the lowest online price I could find) 1 x Controller (bought from Logitech Canada when they had a clearance sale about a year ago) I think I will set up all four of my boxed spares (2 Touch, 1 Boom, 1 Controller) with current firmware, and then rebox. Mind you, I might set up a Touch to replace the current Duet that's sees occasional use in the very basic home theatre setup, and then keep that Receiver as a spare. I'd use the Controller (from the Duet) with the Touch. After an initial bout of mild panic and distress, I'm getting more sanguine about the situation. I personally seldom use the streaming services (although I do very much like the CBC Music service, which is mostly linked from the Internet Radio presets). It's my ripped library that I value. I also am quite sure that I can't see the future, other than to acknowledge that things WILL change. Maybe I'll become a champion of the cloud, and love cloud-based music. Hard to see, but even five years ago I didn't foresee where I am now with server-based music. R. I just ordered another Touch after seeing all the news here today. Been meaning to do so for a while and just hadn't gotten to it, but wanted to get one before the price starts heading up and stock dwindles. Heck there have been times before all this that the Touch was somewhat hard to find, so better to get one while it's easy. Gonna open and update firmware and make sure it works ok, then put it back in the box for a spare, better to be safe about it having the latest working firmware. rayman1701's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41326 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96198 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] How many of you have "spare" squeezeboxes?
I have a Radio, SB2 and Classic in use, and another boxed Classic as a spare (I also have an SB1 that is in storage, but don't really consider it a "spare" given some hardware/firmware limitations). I'm torn between picking up another spare and biting the bullet -- trying to sell off my equipment and looking for alternatives. Beyond local library playback, I'm concerned about Logitech's ongoing support for online services, which I've come to rely upon to some extent and which do require periodic updates/fixes. I'm going to let the emotions subside a bit before I decide. bwaldron's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1073 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96198 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] How many of you have "spare" squeezeboxes?
I'm not sure what to do, buy a spare unit or not. Especially since I'm moving to a bigger house in a couple of months and might find some good use for an additional player then. We've seen that SB models got very expensive in the past once the stocks dried out, so buying a Touch right now won't be a bad investment anyway. But it might very well be that Logitech is actually thinking of releasing a successor to the Touch. At least that's what I'm guessing, since the Logitech employee in the other thread seems to be rather open on many things, but seems to have some sort of NDA in regard to a new Touch or any other new products that may or may not be released. At this point I have to little information to know wether the new platform will be something I'm willing to go for. I don't use mysb.com, so that's easy enough for me (though I realize it's a big pain for many of the people here). I didn't do much with the plugins available either, so that it becomes more closed is not so much of an issue either. The main criteria will be if Pippin is able to create a app that can control the system in a way like we're used to now. The main issue for me seems to be: can Touch devices that were released during the SBS/LMS-era be firmware-upgraded to work in the new UE-era or not and if so, will you still be able to use iOS/Android devices as a means of controlling them, without being tied to the apps that Logitech releases themselves? hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96198 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
