[DNG] New features in libnetaid

|Hi, Recently I pushed new commits to the repository of libnetaid 
replacing cmake with the autotools. Another first, the addition of the 
following socket:

making use of select() for the system calls. Doing this way, 
simple-netaid becomes reactive to netlink events using less CPU 
resource, and essentially remains sleeping until some netlink event 
requires action (for instance, to update the graphical interface after 
the ethernet cable has been plugged in). I joined some good ideas from 
Didier's hopman:

To verify the reactive behavior of simple-netaid, first build and 
install the sources of libnetaid: $ ./autogen.sh $ make $ sudo make 
install The list of build dependencies is: - autoconf - automake - 
libtool - gettext - intltool - libiw-dev After the installation of 
libnetaid, build the following program: #include  #include 
 #include  int main() { for(;;) { int 
rc = nlsock_monitor(); if( rc == 0) printf("Signal received\n"); } 
return 0; } You need to pass the flag -lnetaid to the compiler. That is: 
$ gcc monitor.c -o monitor -lnetaid Now, run the binary as root: $ sudo 
./monitor and try connecting or disconnecting your ethernet cable, or

Yes. I run Firefox ESR as well and it does not see  to have 
problems. Not sure what this implies about TSL certificates.

That I tend to remove the memu keeps me from exploring its 
possiblities. I ran Network when accessing an eBay operation, and 
don't know how to interpret the result. One thing is that loading a 
gif image under show_ads.js tool took 163095650171... ms (ran out of 
space to display following numbers).  But its status code is green OK. 
The x-xss-protection "1; mode=block" Request headers (3.157 KB) No 
idea how to interpret all this.

My AdBlock Latitude is disabled.

Hi Haines

It seems to me that you are assuming that the problem is linked to the
system software environment, but this does not seem to be proven.

First of all: have you tried using other browser than Basilisk? Same
hanging with Firefox etc.?

Another pont. For my experience, in recent times, this type of slowdown
could also be due to problems with TSL certificates. This happens mostly
with "major" sites (I.E. Google, Amazon etc.) that adopt more strict
requirements (TLS 1.3) before and more than others; and it may occurs
where there is an outdated proxy server or appliance, as often is in many
organizations.

I don't know if Basilisk has some developer tools like Firefox or Chrome
(in Firefox-like browsers it is at the >Tools>Web Developer>Network menu or
Ctrl+Shist+E). 
If Basilisk has this kind of tools, then you can use it to check if the
freezes during the loading of the pages is due to network-related
problems, even identifying the specific cause.

Not necessarily simple, but what about filing bugs (Debian) against any
packages that you absolutely cannot live without that would be removed
when you

  apt remove libkuserfeedbackcore1

(assuming chimaera and) assuming that your APT configuration does not
aggressively try to remove automatically installed packages?

If your APT does aggressively remove automatically installed packages,
you may want to mark (some of) the ones you want to keep manual.

I'd give

  mkdir /home/user/telemetry
  chmod  /home/user/telemetry

a try first and a read-only filesystem mounted on /home/user/telemetry
next.  All the while keeping a crontabbed eye on directory content, of
which there should not be any.

# You need root privileges to look for content after the chmod.

If preventing writes breaks your KDE Plasma desktop, something is badly
mis-engineered.  If it still manages to write stuff to that directory,
something "evil" is going on, in that the telemetry stuff is using
elevated privileges, and it may be time to use nullfsvfs.

I've happily run the basilisk browser for a couple years, but recently 
it bagan to hang. On sites that are more demanding such as Amazon and 
eBay. When I do things there's a hang that lasts perhaps a minute.

When I look at Basilisk's requirements I'm left unsure whether beowuld 
is up to them. It requires a 64-bit distribution, 1 Gb RAM, GTK+ 3.4 
or hightr, GLib 2.22 or higher, Pango 1.14 or higher, X.Org 1.0 or 
higher (1.7 or higher recommended), lbstdc++ 4.61 or higher.

Not sure but I suspect beowulf is runing GTK 3.0.0, and pango  1.0, 
etc. If so, it may be that the hangs are because my software is a bit 
dated. I tried clearing cache but it had no obvious effect. 

Would an upgrade to cimaera likely remove the hangs? I've done it on a 
couple systems without a problem, but not my production system.

Very interesting!!!

Reading the file the first couple things that caught my attention also
described
the why and wherefore for the differences.

1. you are running the proprietary drivers not nouveau
2. you are running the latest production brach driver series
(which I could not do because I'm still running a 570 card)
3. you are running only a single gpu
(Nvidia no longer supports running a multi-gpu setup - - - hasn't for
likely over 2 years)

If only I were able to get either/and/or some combination of RX 570 and RX
460 s
running I would pull these nvidia boards in a heartbeat.

When I try to boot the computer with any combination of boards installed I
can't
seem to get the monitor to show anything. (That was with the amdgpu drivers
available - - - - maybe I was supposed to do something more - - - dunno!)

proprietary drivers.
