Subject: [libreoffice-documentation] Vote: Elect Jean Weber as Documentation
team lead

Hi,

I'm calling out to all present and past active members of the
Documentation team to post a vote (+1 or -1).

All of us who know Jean Weber are aware of her years of dedication to
documentation for OpenOffice.org, for ODFAuthors and now for
LibreOffice. You will also be aware of her great expertise in the
publishing profession, and her knowledge and experience of
OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice. We also know what a great organizer
she is. And we also are aware of the vast amount of work she does on
documentation development for the team.

I'm pretty certain that no-one will disagree with me when I say that
she has everyone's respect for her contributions.

I would like to see her empowered as an ambassador for the LibreOffice
project by having official recognition as the Documentation team lead.

I'd like to put this to a vote to be cast within this thread over the
next days (up to November 15, unless there is clearly a consensus
beforehand).

If you agree with this proposal, please could you respond with +1.

If you feel that the team should continue to operate without any one
single leader, with things being taken care of by the person most
diligent at that moment, please respond with -1.

Should we ask Jean Weber to take on the role of recognized LibreOffice
Documentation team lead? +1 or -1?

Welcome back! Some examples in the Draw Guide still show
OpenOffice.org in the example, but we published the chapters anyway.
If you want to struggle with them some more, please use the files in
the Drafts folder for the Draw Guide.

There are some other Draw screenshots that need improvement for better
visibility and printing: the lines are too thin or the handles are too
small or some other part of the image is too pale, or whatever. In
some cases the lines, for example, may need to be artificially
thickened for illustrative purposes. IMO fixing these substandard
images would greatly improve the book.

Of course there are many other things to do (in all the books) in
addition to screenshots. But if you particularly like doing them, the
Impress Guide would benefit from many replacement pictures, because
some visual elements have changed from v3.3.x to v3.4.x. Again, use
the files in the Drafts folder (for the Impress Guide).

Please see
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Development#Getting_Started_Guide

for more info on what I have identified as needing to be done
regarding v3.4.x changes. However, in that list I did not identify
those pictures that I think need to be replaced.

Thanks for the good, fast work, John!

Are you planning to do the pix in Chapter 7 as well? They are not
Fontwork but do have OpenOffice.org in them, as mentioned in a
separate note from me yesterday. If you don't have time, that's okay
too.

First release of the Draw Guide is almost done. Yay!

This isn't urgent, though it would be nice to get it done in the next
few weeks. As with all documentation, the sooner the better IMO...
especially with a product that is updated as frequently as LibreOffice.

The full Impress Guide needs to be compiled from the individual
chapters, using the master document. This may involve a certain amount
of manual fiddling around, as described in Producing LibO User Guides.
If whoever volunteers for this task is not familiar with the details of
the process, I can provide more info or pointers to info or answer
specific questions.

A reminder to anyone working on the Impress or Draw Guides: please use
LibreOffice 3.3.x, NOT 3.4.x, for the first edition of these books. This
is because there are differences between the 3.3 and 3.4 versions.

Linux users please note: for documentation, it's also best to use the
3.3.x downloaded from the LibreOffice website, NOT the one included with
your distribution. Again, there are (or may be) some differences.

When we update all the books, we'll use 3.4.x.

[libreoffice-documentation] Draw Guide

2011-07-03 Thread John Cleland
Hi Jean

I have worked my way through the rest of the chapters and updated the to LibO.
I have not done any off the screen shots though.

I want to install Linux mainly to see what has happened on the desktop. I use
Linux servers all the time but have not looked at the desktop for some time.
Once this is complete I will go through and update the screenshots if they
still need to be done.

Is there a guide on how to create the master document.

Also I found a mistake in the first chapter. I had changed the text for the
hyperlink but not the link itself. I have changed this and uploaded a new
version.

Good move, and thanks for continuing despite this problem.

Other people have had problems, too, so it's probably worth
troubleshooting this. I would like to improve the instructions if we
can figure out why they don't lead you (and others) to the icons.

I suspect that you are looking at a different view. Alfresco has many
choices. This make giving clear instructions more difficult.

When you want a break from working on the Draw Guide, please take a
screen capture of what you see when you are at a screen from which you
are downloading the file. Either send the screen capture to me offlist
or upload it somewhere and send me (or the list) the link.

Hi Jean

I will do this.

How do you check files out. It does not seem obvious to me

In the Content Items area under English Documentation Draw Guide
Drafts, you should see a row of icons under the name and other info
about each file. Click the little arrow icon on the right-hand end of
this row of icons. One of the choices is Check Out. Click that, then
follow the prompts.

(There are other ways to get to this, but that's the method I use.)

The checkout process creates a working copy which should appear in the
same Content Items area. When you want to check a file back in, you will
find the Check In icon on the right-hand end of the row of icons
underneath the working copy.

Aside: I was going to refer you to the early-draft chapter on using
LibreOffice's Alfresco site that is in the Resources space, but it
doesn't seem to cover checkout very clearly. (I did a very hasty job on
the draft before going away in early June.)

[libreoffice-documentation] HTML versions of the Guides

2011-06-21 Thread John Cleland
Hi

When checking the PDF version of the Calc guide I found it hard, compared to
html to move around the document. I would like to propose that an HTML version
is produced. I would be happy to undertake the work.

I am not sure what open source html producers/editors are available, but will
do some research into what is available.

Does anyone else think this is a good/bad idea.

Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Re: PING John Cleland: Status of Calc Guide?

2011-06-19 Thread John Cleland

Hi Jean

Sorry for delay eventually worked out password correct user name was not.

I have uploaded the odt file and the pdf file. Thanks to David for offering
to help as well.

I will look at the Calc guide and update when one of the chapters has
changed.

I think previous errors are sorted. Have looked through the pdf and think
the links work. If they do not please let me know and I will try to sort.

One thing I noticed using Acrobat Reader on Windows 7, was that on clicking
the links to the screenshots the link went to the text and you had to scroll
down to view the screenshot. I am not sure if this is the case using other
pdf readers and operating systems. If the title for the screen shot was put
on the top of the screenshot then the screenshot would appear in the screen.

What about an Html version of the user guide. I think html has the
advantage over pdf in that there is a back button which makes viewing
easier.

If either of the ideas above are accepted then I would be happy to do the
work.

John

Think links fixed.

There are some parts for example on page ten the text

If you want to use macros written in Microsoft Excel using the VBA macro

This does not seem to have a link to chapter twelve in the source, should

I have updated the odt file with new address and will update the sections as

John, the last note I can find (dated 25 May) says you were having

Yes, please upload the updated ODM, and the ODT and PDF files for the

We need a volunteer to compile a full book from the Calc Guide chapters.
If you wait for me to get to it, it might not appear for quite awhile

The instructions are somewhere in Producing LibreOffice User Guides in
 English Resources on Alfresco.

The master document and all the chapters are in English Documentation
 Calc Guide Reviewed.

Anyone willing to give this a try? I'm available to answer questions.
What we've done quite successfully at OOo is for someone to put the book
together and then make a PDF Release Candidate of that book for others
to check for things like incorrect cross-references (a legacy of some
gremlin in the OOo chapters from which these are derived). So you won't
 be alone!

Hi Jean

Ok will try again tonight.

Will look at the manually remove the contents and copyright pages manually
and look at how to add the fields back in the odm if they are missing.

Are there instructions on how to do this in the writer guide?

I looked at the links the previous time I compiled this and they seemed to
work. Will try again, if this does not work will edit the links manually in
the odt file.
