Re: [DX-CHAT] how to be DX?

2008-03-07 Thread David Rollitt
Hi Charles, Peter and everyone,

I agree with Peters comments. I would say from Eu HS is medium hard to work, I
just checked, I have 16 QSO's in past 15 years with one Q so far this year.
Its activity we want so get on and work 'em any way you have to. A lot of new
operators are out there with the new no-code licence and that's increased
activity.

  Charles,

You probably answered your own question!

With so little activity on the bands at the moment, there is stacks of spare
real estate (read frequencies) available.

If you do have to spread them out over a range of frequencies, do so with no
feelings of guilt. You are actually doing the Amateur Service a favour by
helping to populate the particular band.

  Good DX!

  Cheers

I have a dilemma and would like opinions on this item, please:

I am vy minor DX but get large EU pile ups anyway (likely due to boredom,
no one else to call that moment).

Due to EU calling practices, I must use split, and feel guilty about using
two freqs. on the band.

Thus, I use one listening frequency. But, after a few minutes of working
the REALLY LOUD, most

of the ten to twenty callers are all the same strength and I can not get
more than one letter.

I am loath to ask for a 5kc spread of listening freqs, or even more, due to
guilt cited above.

Thus, then I resort to calling by numbers, a practice so many dislike.

What is the best op practice in this situation? tnx 73,

Charles Harpole HS0ZCW

[DX-CHAT] Shetland Islands

2008-03-25 Thread David Rollitt
Hi gang,

Did the WAE and CQ group knew something after all.

This is the link to the news snippet about the Shetland Islands on BBC.

A friend of mine wanted to go to Mt Athos many, many years ago before Martti
got there I declined and he decided not to go!!!

Who knows maybe I'll be on a DXCC expedition, Shetland is not too far after
all! But don't hold your breath its looks like a hopeless cause.

Hey Joe,

Nope, don't like it, I've been chasing DXCC since 1969, almost 40 years and
I vote with ARRL and the way they do things.
I know strictly I don't get to vote, being a G but they make it interesting.
I love the DXCC and thanks to the ARRL for giving me something
to chase.

[DX-CHAT] Are CW ops getting older?

2008-06-30 Thread David Rollitt
HI,

I recently made a few QSO's during the All Asia CW test, the exchange in the AA
Test is RS(T) and Age for OM's.
Having checked my contacts I found the average age was 49.1!!
I wonder if anyone else checked their contacts this way.

It will be interesting to do the same thing with the SSB test coming up ( I
think) in September.

Re: [DX-CHAT] Most memorable QSO

2009-02-12 Thread David Rollitt
Hi Kelly

Well I worked HM King Hussein of Jordan JY1 several times. I was there on
the first day he came on March 9th 1970. Don, SV0WI had been in Jordan
working and came back on 20m with exciting news. Don had set up and
"tested" the royal station and then returned to Athens. Its a long story but
with this prior knowledge I was second UK QSO for JY1, my old friend Colin
G3JEC (Who I'd telephoned, was first)

My second contact with JY1 was the next day. I was chatting on 14192 with
5Z4KL Andre and GW3AHN Tom, about the previous days excitement when King
Hussein called me! I have two hand written QSL's from the Royal Palace in
Amman, sent via airmail from those QSO's. King Hussein stayed on frequency a
while and worked a few more friends. Back in 1970 we ragchewed not a simple
59. I also contacted JY2 several times, Princess Muna and indeed JY1/B Major
( later Colonel) Zaza all from the royal palace in Amman or the holiday QTH
at Aqaba.

On that day March 9th JY1 was looking for Don SV0WI and called SV0WII, he
must have thought the call JY1 was strange, especially when the operator
said his name was Hussein. The SV0 sadly ignored the King and moved of
frequency finally, missing being the very first QSO for JY!, I was listening
and busting to get a call in... those were exciting days!

Subject: [DX-CHAT] Most memorable QSO

Hi Guys -

I was thumbing through an old box of QSL cards the other day and
reminiscing about some of the QSOs that where in there. It's pretty
amazing how we can look at a QSL card and it brings back the memories of
working that station.

I thought it might be interesting to wrap this into a future column of
WorldRadio. If you have a memorable DX QSO, I'd like to hear about it.
What made it memorable for you? Did you sit in the pileups for hours?
Did you happen to catch a rare DX station CQing before he was spotted?
Did you work somebody famous (JY1 comes to mind). Anything that sets
the QSO apart from others is what I'd like to hear about. And if you
happen to have a QSL card for the contact, it would be icing on the cake
if you could forward that as well.

For those that are not aware, WorldRadio magazine was sold to CQ this
past November. With the sale, WR was transformed into an online
magazine and is now free to anyone. The first online issue was
"published" about a week ago and can be found here:
http://www.cq-amateur-radio.com/WorldRadio.html.

See you in the pileups!

Hi Guys,

... well done!
I hope everyone has got their contacts in and is happy. Not many more hours to
go but we do have a sunspot so maybe if you are still looking today will be
better. I was lucky to get a CW QSO about 2 hours into the operation.

My K5D baseball cap arrived yesterday and it's great, well made and clear
printing, I am happy with it. So, go to the shop and order yours, help the
expedition.
Here as promised is my photo from yesterday on my Flickr page.

[DX-CHAT] Remove virtual comport?

2009-05-11 Thread David Rollitt
Hi gang

Sorry if I am off topic a wee bit but I do need help.

HELP, please I am trying to get onto data modes here

I don't have a serial port on my PC so I needed to create virtual ports on
Serial/USB converter and in so doing I have created several of these comports.
Planning to use MMTTY and N1MM. The MMTTY only offers ports up to 8

With failed attempts to load a differing interface and CAT control for
N1MM/Turbolog I have used all the port numbers
I don't have the driver details for my earlier attempts it was commercial. Its
gone back!

Can anyone help, Google has not been a success for me so far

A very big thank you

Re: [DX-CHAT] ZS8T

2009-08-20 Thread David Rollitt

I heard him a total of three times, once on the very top edge of 20m and
then twice lower down. It seems he was on a 24 hour net frequency in the
USA and the net controllers took exception to their frequency being used
for |DX-ing. The rows went on long after ZS8T had left the frequency.
The frequency would seem to belong to the net somehow, poor Petrus was
unaware, like me of the situation. After those rows I never heard him again.

Dick Flanagan wrote:

I truly wonder if Petrus will ever know just how many people donated
time, money and equipment to make his operation a success. On the
other hand, I am sure the pile-ups would have daunted even an
experienced DXer, let alone a new and experienced ham like Petrus.

If anyone could be blamed for the shortfall, I think it would be those
who inflated the expectations of the DX community without knowing
whether Petrus would be up to the task. In many ways I feel sorry for
him and the legacy that will always follow him.

Re: [DX-CHAT] IRCs agn...

2009-10-09 Thread David Rollitt

It seem to me the big mistake everyone is making is to include the post
office in this transaction, In the 60's and 70's I used 100's of IRC's
and never put a single one into the PO. We used them as currency between
amateurs. The DXNS ( Geoff Watts) would accept them as payment and then
offer them out again as prizes or sell at a discounted price back to
amateurs. The humble IRC was currency between amateurs, they didn't seem
to have a sell-by date back then, I am guessing it was a post office
moron who thought up the date idea!

If you will include the PO expect problems otherwise we should simply
return to the old ways Grasshopper!

Today I exchanged over a hundred "old" IRCs and purchased fifty new

[DX-CHAT] SM3CER Contest service

2009-11-26 Thread David Rollitt

Hi,
I use SM3CER contest service almost every other week but its not been
up-dated since Sept/October does anyone know what happened? I've not
heard anything. Its a brilliant site and carries everything I need to
know about which contest is on and what I'm listening too if I hear CQ
Test on the bands.

Is the another site as good as this one? I haven't found one even close!
