Re: [Elecraft] Intermittent loss of power output K3 - update

2019-03-04 Thread Peter Lock
Subject: [Elecraft] Intermittent loss of power output K3

Good day

Late last year, my K3 (no 6957) developed a fault. The symptoms were:
1. No power output when keying the rig
2. TX LED on when keyed, (sidetone generated in CW mode)
3. Single bar showing on the RF power meter, whatever scale, ie 0 - 10 or 0
- 100
4. ATU tune command: relays clicking, TX LED on, no power output, no
indication on SWR meter; two horizontal dashes in the VFO A display area
where normally one would see the resolving SWR; in VFO B area 5.0W is
indicated
5. TX gain calibration failed on 5W and 50W; mW TX calibration gain OK

Thank you to all who have responded to my post. The board connection pins
are gold plated, and all look bright and shiny like new. The TMP
connectors, however, all are tarnished on the outside, although the mating
surfaces look clean; I will get some Deoxit and give them a going-over.

The diodes D36 and D37 in the SWR bridge tested in situ showed a forward
voltage of 0.362V and a reverse open circuit, so they seem to be fine.

Does FAST also remove the light delay in the audio?

Check CONFIG:TX MON, to see if it is set to NOR or FAST (FAST should have
no "distortion", because you hear unprocessed MIC audio, with no delay).
This applies to both your own MIC audio and KDVR3 recordings.

Yes. However, with FAST enabled, you cannot hear what the speech
compressor is doing. Everything you hear while transmitting is
"unprocessed."

Re: [Elecraft] Intermittent loss of power output K3

2019-03-04 Thread Keith Trinity WE6R

Hi Peter;
It definitely had one bad FET on the LPA when it was here, I do not see
in the report that it was intermittent, so I may not have looked closely
for those types of failures.
If you are sure it makes MW power when it is in the failure state, then
it is highly likely the LPA.
Inspect D1 closely, I have seen one side have poor solder, or it can
heat and the solder crystallize. Re-flow solder.
Pull the KPA3 but leave the KPAIO3 riser board and you can run it with
just the LPA.
Disregard errors about KPA3 or set it to "not inst" while you are
working on it.
Then set for several watts (not 5 exactly) and long press XMIT to go
into TUNE, IE transmit a carrier. (TUN PWR must be at "nor").
Then take a stick and tap around on the LPA. Around D1. Also the
green/red enamel on T1 & 2 can fail and the windings can short.
Tap the three bias pots, sometimes they fail internally, or their solder
points.

Look at all parts for solder problems.
You can put it in the fridge and chill it down to encourage failure, or
leave it on for an hour with a blanket over it to heat it up.

[Elecraft] Elecraft K-2 Question

2019-03-04 Thread William Aycock

A question if you please.

I am assembling a K-2. At present, I am currently in the Alignment and
Test section, Part II. Page 65 covers the BFO test where you use Band+
and Band- to check for BFO range.  When I press Band+, the frequency
counter initially reads around 1.480 MHz and starts increasing in
frequency. I am guessing about 100 kHz per minute.  When I press Band-,
I get a good reading of 4.911 MHz.  All of the other checks thusfar in
this Part II have been good. This is puzzling and I hope someone can
give me some ideas.

Thanks,

Bill KC5MN

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K-2 Question

2019-03-04 Thread Don Wilhelm

Bill,

That is not a good situation, and I have never seen that condition.
Check the orientation of varactors D37 and D38.
Then check the soldering of the L33 leads to the 1/8 watt resistor - you
may have to use a magnifier and good lighting.
Then check the soldering of all components. To find out which
components, look at the right corner of the RF Board schematic sheet 2.

All the components shown below U11 are suspect.
