[Elecraft] Wildly OT -- at first glance
Hi gang, I reserve the right to make a movie recommendation here once every five years or so. This one is called "Clara," and you'll think it's entirely off-topic until almost the very end. Trust me on this one. If you're a fan of the movie "Contact," adapted from the book by Carl Sagan, chances are you'll get that same chill up your spine from this one. No further spoilersbut I will say it's damn good despite the relatively low budget. And it's also suitable as a date-night movie, unlike the plethora of unwashed NSFW bar-raising scary blunt instruments wielded on most streaming services these days. Here's the link. It's on the free youtube site so there are sundry commercials to ignore, and it's anachronistically low-res at 360p, but worth it anyway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfM-YbDxqKE ** DO NOT post about this on the forum! ** Please email me directly if you have comments. Re: [Elecraft] K2/10 problem
Allan, The first thing to suspect is the wattmeter diodes in the KAT2 - I would arbitrarily replace them - they are 1N5711 type. That should cure your power setting vs. actual power problem. Set the 2 pots on the KAT2 as instructed in the manual after replacing the diodes. In fact, remove the KAT2 until you get the rest of the K2 working, then check the power setting vs. the actual power output. The wattmeter diodes may be at fault, but eliminate the KAT2 until after you have the base K2 working properly. As for you other problem of RX not working, yes a BFO reading of All zeros says something is wrong with the BFO (or the probe) - fix that first before going onto the ATU/power output problems. It is possible that U11 or one of its components has failed. Again fix that first. Remove the KAT2 and work into a 50 ohm dummy load until that is resolved. Check the K2 internal probe by trying it into TP1 or TP3 to make sure it is working. If the probe has a fault, it may be leading you down the wrong path. Remove the heatsink and check for a broken connection at either end of the capacitor. It that is the case, you can use any 10pF capacitor - I use a disk ceramic with both leads spread out to make the connections. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/27/2023 5:59 PM, Allan Forster wrote: Hi, I found that the actual power out did not match my setting, eg. Some practices vary with the type of contact—casual, contest, organized program (SOTA/POTA), event (JOTA, Field Day), DXpedition—and some are just good practices. This document is a good consensus description, with a lean towards contesting and DXpedition practices. It is called “Ethics and Operating Procedures for the Radio Amateur” and was developed by experience European hams. https://www.iaru-r1.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Eth-operating-IARU-ENGLISH-version3-2010-amended-2021.pdf I also recommend the ARRL Operating Manual, though I haven’t read a recent edition. I actually have it ready to pick up at my library right now. https://home.arrl.org/action/Store/Product-Details/productId/114292 The numbers are usually “serial numbers”. They start with 1 for your first contact and increase with each contact. http://www.arrl.org/contest-basics https://www.qsl.net/zs1an/contesting_faq.html wunder K6WRU Walter Underwood CM87wj http://observer.wunderwood.org/ (my blog) > On Jun 27, 2023, at 7:53 AM, Karl W Hubbard via Elecraft > wrote: > > I tried driving out to my local ham fest location as indicated on the ARRL > website, but no one was there, and then went to the past site at the high > school football stadium. Re: [Elecraft] Field Day Operation
Thanks, I just extracted that period from my log (DXBase) to take another look after all of these years. I operated only 20-meter SSB and took a break from 0718Z to 1347Z. There were a lot of two QSO/minutes and some three QSOs/min. So it's more like 88 Qs/hr :-) This predates my K3, so I was using a TS-870 and HB 3-el Yagi@45 feet. Obviously the band was in good shape. On 6/26/2023 7:43 PM, Al Lorona wrote: Wow. I can't even imagine working 1532 contacts in 24 hours.
