Jeff, Make sure you have quit MacLoggerDX when using the KX3 Utility. If it is active, it will cause a communications conflict with the KX3 Utility. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Question
The information on calibration of filter is in the owner's manual. The version I have, it is on page 32 under the heading CALIBRATION. It clearly states that if the filter and KX3 were ordered and shipped at the same time, the filter calibration is not needed. Elecraft retains configuration files for each KX3 it ships which includes calibration data for the filter. I know this because I made a very dumb error in building my kit and Elecraft support worked me through the troubleshooting process and the last try before sending back fixed it. One of the troubleshooting steps was to do a REINIT which sets all configuration and calibration data back to factory default. Once I notified Vic in support that my problem was solved and I was going to do the filter calibration, he came back immediately and said Stop Don't! and my S/N configuration file was attached to the email. He told me just to upload the config file. I uploaded it and my KX3 absolutely lit up. It was an amazing moment and this radio has been amazing ever since. If you can't find the statement on no need to do filter calibration in the manual, just repost and I'll find it in the current version manual. 73 John W4DX On Sat, Oct 13, 2012 at 8:50 PM, Phil Hystad phys...@mac.com wrote: OK but I just looked in the assembly manual and the user guide and I did not see anything about NOT doing the configuration/calibration of the filter. I think there is a comma in the below excerpt from the manual that may be misleading. If you're not comfortable, send and email to supp...@elecraft.com and you will the correct information. I would strongly advise against performing the filter calibration until you hear it from Elecraft. *Most calibration steps are performed at the* *factory for both kit and assembled KX3s.* There is one exception: If you install a KXFL3 roofing filter during KX3 kit assembly*, *or install one in a factory assembled KX3 *after initial* *purchase, *you’ll need to perform the Receive Sideband calibration step (pg 32). Just how much care and effort you are willing to expend will depend on whether you are willing to leave well enough alone or whether you want to tweak it for more optimum performance. I do work on the legacy Elecraft gear, and in the case of the K2 filter alignment in particular, the manual gives you workable settings, but I use Spectrogram to optimize the filter settings. Yes, my settings are different from the manual settings, but I have never had a customer complain about the settings I have used - Quite the contrary, I have received many accolades about the K2 filter settings that I have used. There is not a Spectrogram equal for the KX3, I only inject that as one example that says The manual settings are workable, but there can be optimization above and beyond the manual settings for those who want to do refinement. I recommend that all users do the refinement. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/13/2012 9:43 PM, Mike wrote: Page 31 of the owner's manual states that if you install a KXFL3 during kit assembly, you need to run the receive sideband calibration on page 32. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Rec'd today
Don Andrew, Thanks for taking the time to respond and for the much appreciated information. I have been following Elecraft and its product line since 2009 and developed a strong desire to own an Elecraft radio. I had pretty much settled on idea of building the K2 at the first of 2012. The K2 would provide me with a lot of new HF experiences including finally getting to own an Elecaft. The eventual goal is to have the K3 in the shack and the K2 for portable, other operating locations and backup. The release of the KX3 through a curve ball. I went back and forth K2 vs KX3 for the first 6 months of the year. Finally in June, the KX3 became the overwhelming choice and the order was placed. I am really looking forward to this radio and all the new capabilities I'll get to explore. In watching the reflector, I've gained more insight into the level of knowledge, experience and realtime Elecraft support. I certainly recognized many issues were quickly acknowledged/addressed and that build issues are quite often builder-related (I'm going try to make mental effort to slow myself down during the build). Instead of listing any questions I might have had (all in the past have been addressed and anything current I sure will be taken care of), I'm going the let my ambiguous 'low level static' comment drift away. I am really impressed with the support and information made readily available in the Elecraft community. A friend of mine had a recent problem with his K2 PA. With help from the reflector and Eleccraft tech support, he repaired it himself and a very short time. Don, I think you helped with that one. So, good luck with your K2 endeavor and have fun. Robert - I've been a little bit wondering same as you. It would appear my KX3 will ship some weeks from now. There have been over 1000 shipped now. I wonder if this is just low level reflector static or if the 'issues' are significant. Unlike you, I also want but don't own a K3. 73 John W4DX On Thu, Aug 2, 2012 at 9:36 PM, kp4y k...@yahoo.com wrote: I was notified today that my KX3 is on the way, yeah! I know that I will like it the same way I like my K3, but when I hear issues like this and the case vibration, I wonder if I made a good decision. Are these issues not getting worked out at factory as we speak? At near $1,400 for a QRP rig, this is an expensive toy as to be needing this type of home made fixes 73's Robert - KP4Y Sent from Samsung tabletAndrew Moore andrew.n...@gmail.com wrote:Tex - if you're referring to the scratchy mechanical noise that occurs when you rotate the encoder even when the KX3 is powered off, it seems that can be solved by carefully removing the main tuning knob (remove rubber sleeve to access the hex screw opening), carefully removing the circlip and washer from the shaft, and polishing/greasing them. There is no need to remove the nut that secures the encoder. Here's a post on the subject by Mike / W5EEA. I went through this process myself and it cured the scratchy. I did not polish the circlip or attempt to flatten the washer - I only applied some fine polishing creme for all metals to each side of the washer and polished that with a Dremel tool, then applied some white lithium grease to both sides and put it all back together. Scratchy is about 95 percent gone. Please be careful.. and obviously this is not an Elecraft-endorsed mod. Mike's post follows. 73, --Andrew, NV1B .. --- From: mikew5...@hotmail.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: KX3 encoder noise fixfor some Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2012 08:39:52 -0600 PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS FIX..unless you read this and think 'I have no problem doing this'. There is every chance you will loose parts or make things worse than they were (or may end up buying a new encoder). I found the scrapping/scratching stopped if you invert the radio and turned the knob. If you remove the knob you can see a C clip on the shaft over a washer resting on the body of the encoder. On mine the noise was coming from the surface finish between the washer and the clip. The washer rotates a little each turn and that is why the noise does not happen at the same spot in the rotation of the knob. Remove the washer and clip, make them flat and polish them, put them back on with a good silicone grease and it feels like a K3 VFO. If you think SM parts are small you will never see what needs to be done to the washer and clip. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not stick a screwdriver in your had or ding up your very nice new KX3 that works *just fine* without this fix if this is not something that sounds easy for you to do. (I work at Lockheed where we make some REALLY NICE little gizmos - that's where I got the 'practice' for this kind work) --- On Thu, Aug 2, 2012 at 6:55 PM, pkhjr k...@yahoo.com wrote: Received my KX3 ordered 2/17 serial # 1040. Your K2 sounded great on two of our stations when I was listening. 73 John W4DX On Sun, Jun 24, 2012 at 4:32 PM, aj4tf aj...@arrl.net wrote: If you have W4UA in your field day log on either 15m or 75/80m, then you heard K2/100 #7006 on the air. Re: [Elecraft] CW Key suggestions ?
I am on the same path, just ordered a KX3 and likewise will add the paddle to the order before I receive the 'Christmas present'. I've been moving slowly towards CW over the last 2 years and have had a Vibroplex Iambic on my 'list' the whole time. About 6 weeks ago, I picked up at Nye-Viking straight key. It took a while to feel comfortable with it but through the same time period, my copy speed got better. I recommend the Nye-Viking for a straight key. Having read the Begali reviews for 2 years (similar to Elecraft for product function and quality, engineering customer service reviews), I sprung for the Begali Simplex. Received it this past Thursday. It was a little more $, but after having hooked it up and used it - it's a purchase I'll never regret. 73 John W4DX On Sun, Jun 24, 2012 at 8:23 PM, Ronald Nutter ron.nut...@networkref.comwrote: Thanks to all that have responded to my previous questions. The next thing I am looking at is getting a CW key. I am thinking about getting the plug-in key that is an option for KX3. Since the KX3 that I have ordered probably wont be in my hands until sometime around Christmas based on the other emails I see of order date to ship date, I am looking at getting a CW key for the FT817 I will be using in the interim. I am thinking about possibly getting two different keys - a straight key, possibly a Nye-Viking type and maybe something similar to the Iambic keyer paddle as my cw skills improve. While I probably wont do CW all of the time, it doesnt hurt to be more fluent in that mode than I currently am. Would appreciate any suggestions in this area that anyone here has.
