[Elecraft] new dead K3s still not fixed
bought a new K3s Factory and a k3 kit, 1 month ago, the K3S was dead out of the box, sent back to elecraft for repair, came back ,worked for 30 minuits and crashed.been working with support on the telephone. got the receiver working but with a lot of glitches. the head of elecraft needs to call me so we can find a solution for this. send me another one that works. I have been working all day with Dale @ Elecraft with this and just sent him a e-mail of what I found. Dale has been very involved in this trying to track this down.. now we need to see just what kind of fix we can come up with.. I have been on 6 meters since '63 and have seen a lot of up and down of band conditions in different years, but don't believe this year is anything special. the really good years is when the sun spot cycle really gets hot, world wide openings, this year for us up in the pacific northwest the band openings are below what we have in the past. What has everyone fired up is WSJT-X FT8 everyone seems to be trying it out on 6 meters, it will decode sigs way below the threshold of the human ear. this year I was able to put in the log BA4SI ( china ) using FT8.. just a 5 el beam and the KPA500, some of the local big guns have been putting europe in the log. I have worked a few HF'ers that put up a dipole for 6 just to try out the band. [Elecraft] K3 HI SIG on the display
my k3 was working just fine last night when i shut it off. when Ii turned it on this morning i get a HI SIG message where the VFO B display is. disconnected the ant, and all cables to the computer, and it's still there. none of the controls seenm to work on the front panel, i can tune the vfo and it changes freq, but i cant get into the menu. help needed. tnx. [Elecraft] Yahama CM500 help
I am trying to help my buddy out on the phone who is 1200 mi away, he is trying to get the cm500 to work on his new to him K3. I noticed that my vswr on the K3 did not match what the KPA500 showed in the standby mode. what I found was that I had the 6 mtr ant connected to the ant 3 jack. I changed it to ant 1 and the vswr was in more in agrement with the K3. It seems that the distance from the input to ant 3 connector is enough to add strays to the input to output ckt. If you are unlucky as me and live in the city you will have a high noise level. during the morning hours my noise level is S1 with the 2nd bar just blinking with the preamp in the K3 on. later in the day when everyone is home the noise goes to S3S4 as the load on the power grid goes up. I checked my K3 on a dummy load and I found only a few birdies internal to the K3 50.023 50.044 50.147.3 watching the birds on the P3 they move as I turn the VFO Interesting that I only hear the birds with the preamp in the K3 turned on or off. with the external ARR preamp on I don't hear them, but with my 5 el beam the noise is high enough that I only use the K3's preamp. I only notice the bird at 50.147, the rest are below the noise floor with the antenna on. the only way to check for internal birds in the K3 is to check it with a dummy load connected. you say that the birds are spaced 30 khz apart should tell you that some device external to the K3 is causing them. a beam is very helpful in nulling out the interference. it's best to check out your house 1st for the offending device, unplug everything one at a time and check to see if they are gone. I don't think the K3 has a drift problem. but what it could be is the other station that is listening to you is tuning his dial slightly to adjust to get the tone or voice to where he likes it, and then when you go back to receive you see that he is off freq. thinking that you drifted. I just did a freq. calibration of my K3. with the dial set to 9.999.000 in usb for wwv at 10 mhz, that gave me a 1 khz tone that I sent to the computer using Spectran that will show the freq of the audio. I was able to set thr REF CAL in the K3 to be within .03 cycle of dead beat. I calibrated my Xtal reference osc dead beat with wwv. and then set the K3 to 6 meters , dial set to 49.999.000 to give a 1 khz tone and checked the 5 harmonic of the xtal osc. and found that the K3 was only off 8.68 cycles. due to the fact I was using the 5th harmonic of the xtal osc there is some small error. I did a freq drift check before doing the above and found my K3 had a drift of only 8.5 cycles over a 2 hour warm up. to me this is darn good... [Elecraft] P3 birdy
Now that I have a much lower noise floor I see on the P3 a birdy that tracks the VFO up and down as I tune.
