[Elecraft] Rig control error with K3S and WSJT-X on 30 meters

2022-04-21 Thread Bob McGraw
Only one band?   Sounds like the classic RFI into the computer, the
cables between the radio and computer.  Most likely common mode current
on the feedline coming back down into the station area.   That would
require common mode choke to be installed at the feed point of the
antenna.  Might try a couple of turns of coax through a FT core and see
if that helps.   A couple of clamp on beads on the cable between the
radio and computer might help. But the antenna feed point is really the
best place to censure common mode current.

Also..make sure every piece of station equipment is bonded to a
common point.   I use the station power supply ground terminal for my
common point.  Each piece of equipment has a dedicated jumper to this
point.

Over a period of time I've noticed an occasional error when transmitting
FT8 on 30 meters with my K3S using WSJT-X. A couple of seconds into a
transmit cycle, WSJT-X will display a "Rig control error" box, and I
start hearing the rig's modulated audio output on its own speaker. This
only happens on 30 meters, and not 100% of the time. Over the past day,
I've done FT8 QSOs normally on various bands, but when I tried 30 meters
tonight I experienced the above error several times in a row. It's
occurred over time using various versions of WSJT-X. The computer is a
Mac running Catalina.

I tried going into WSJT-X preferences and changing Radio > Split
Operation from "Rig" to "Fake It," but the error persisted.

I can try changing around various parts of the setup (using a Windows
PC, for example), but first was curious if anyone has seen a
band-specific error like this.

Thanks,

Frank K6FOD

Hi,
See:

I has similar issues, and solved them via the process described on my
web page.

That is Part two of a three part article on removing RFI, and
understanding your RF environment. This part covers self induced RFI,
which is what I suspect you are seeing in your setup.

2022-04-19 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Band specific problems are nearly always the result of common mode RFI
(RF on the feedline/rig/CAT cable). Start by testing into a dummy load
or with QRP (<5W) output. After that, use the normal common mode
elimination measures, quality chokes at the antenna feedpoint(s),
bonding all of the equipment together, ferrites on the CAT/USB cable.

Re: [Elecraft] rig control...

2011-03-09 Thread Leigh L. Klotz Jr WA5ZNU
You can adjust the fldigi waterfall height with a menu.

Configure / Waterfall / FFT Processing, then there is a slider.
The max is 160 pixels. Would you like it bigger?

Also, you can do this:

Configure / Waterfall / Mouse, then check the box "Left click replays
history"

Then when you click on a signal that's been transmitting a while, it will
decode the last few seconds on the screen.

You might also like (on the same dialog) "INsert text on single left click"
and put in the string

Then it will put in a blue line with the frequency and mode every time you
click to another signal, so if you want to go back you can just click on
that blue line as if it were a hyperlink and it will take you back.

Re: [Elecraft] rig control...

2011-03-08 Thread Bill Allen
I just tried FLDIGI recently and liked it very much. I like that it is a
truly cross-platform program so that no matter what type of computer I am
using - Linux, Windows, etc.- I have a program with the same interface to
use.

I recommend the Belkin F5U409 USB to Serial adapter. I have used this for
years without any problems. Unlike some USB to Serial adapters, this one
provides all the serial lines and the full protocol. It usually can be
found for $25 or less. On my Ubuntu 10.04 system, this adapter is picked up
plug and play without having to install anything and presents itself as
/dev/ttyUSB0.

[Elecraft] rig control...

2011-03-07 Thread John Ragle
As has already been mentioned, SignaLink/USB has no provisions for rig
frequency control. Also you should note that DigiPan itself has no
provisions for rig control. If you are content to adjust frequency
manually then DigiPan is a very nice, /simple(!),/ program, perfectly
adequate for BPSK31 QSO's. DigiPan will run on almost any kind of Intel
computer, from "pencil sharpener" to mainframe.

If you want more control, I highly recommend FLDIGI over the several
other available programs. Its interface is very straighforward, and the
screen is not crowded. I've used almost every program available, whether
free or not, and have settled on FLDIGI as the best, *no-compromises*,
one to use. It is now in Ver. 3.21.4, installs easily, and is kept
up-to-date. Google for the FLDIGI download site. The one downside to it
(a minor one) is that the waterfall is not very high on the screen, so
if you like a tall waterfall, you will be annoyed by this at first. You
can always run Spectravue simultaneously with FLDIGI if you want more
viewing turf. This quirk of FLDIGI is much more than offset by the
variety of modes available!

The one detail to which you will have to attend is making a serial
connection from your computer to your transceiver. If your computer is
an older model, it will have COM ports available. The K3 also has a
matching COM port, and the problem devolves to finding a cable. IF, on
the other hand, your computer is a newer model, it will probably NOT
have COM ports built in. You then have two choices: (1) buy a simple,
inexpensive card that fits inside the computer on the mother board,
comes with drivers either already in Windows or on a CD or mini-CD, or
(2) to use a USB-2.0 to Serial adapter. In this last case, beware! as
many of the commercially available USB-to-serial adapters will NOT work,
for various reasons. Be prepared to buy an "industrial-strength"
USB-to-serial converter, or better stilll, buy the one that Elecraft
offers (it comes with a guarantee to work!).

Good luck. Feel free to email me if you have further questions. Everyone

[Elecraft] Rig Control

2007-10-08 Thread Thom LaCosta
I am using Puppy Linux and have installed FLDIGI. Is anyone using this to
control their K2 and/or the K3?

Being a Linux dummy...I would be willing to install some other logging/control

I had some trouble with N1MM at Field Day. I had tested with the
K2/100 before then, but when I got to the site the night before FD,
it didn't work. It took a considerable amount of troubleshooting to
figure out the problem.

Turned out, there were two issues. First, condensation had built up
in the K2/100 overnight, and this caused several high-impedance
circuits, like the display and the AGC to malfunction.

Second, the K2/100 wasn't receiving the signals from the laptop. The
lack of receive was due to two factors - a bit of burnt flux between
a couple of the DB-9 pins, and an unsoldered pin on the MAX232 chip.
(!) I'd been using the K2/100 for a year and a half before I noticed
that.

Make sure the K2 is transmitting and receiving, and the computer as
well. You can verify that the K2 is transmitting by hitting the
Display button while the PORT menu is being edited.

2005-08-30 Thread Donald Nesbitt
Hi Randy - no solution here but just a couple of thoughts of things to
check/try - I'm using both HRD and N1MM quite nicely with my K2.

Did the KIO2 ever work?

Is the "special" KIO2 cable properly constructed?

Check that the port is actually on in the K2 menu

Check that the KIO2 is actually working by using the terminal program as
described in the manual - possible that the little bitty choke in the KIO2
is blown??

Check the settings of your COM port using the windows (I'm assuming you are
using windows here) device manager to see that you actually are using an
active and available COM port (for instance, on one computer I use a USB to
serial converter and windows places that resulting port at COM4)

I've found that setting N1MM to 1 stop bit works as well or better than the
2 stop bits that seem to be the default.

Unless there is something very exotic about your setup, there is a solution
to this vexing problem!
