My very own totally unscientific opinion is that hyperkitty is meh
while Discourse is actually quite awesome (and I’ve always said I
hated webforums prior to using Discourse). I had a look at the
discussion over at the gtk-devel mailing list and I found some more
scientific evidence in

I’ve been getting email notifications, but I actually find Discourse
so good that I don’t feel the need to use the reply feature so I do
not know how well it behaves for people who don’t use the web
interface. Do note I’ve repeatedly said in the past that I hate web
apps, yet here’s something I admitted a couple of minutes ago on IRC:

Yes it will be our own instance. The motivation of the move is that the
GTK mailing lists are being migrated to discourse so I took the liberty
to adding our team to it as well.
