Ford's Fuel-Economy Fumble, Tesla's Free Supercharging: The Week In Reverse
For June 13, 2014
GreenCarReports· Jun 15, 2014
Ford cuts gas mileage ratings, Tesla opens its patents, and the Nissan Leaf
goes on the attack—it's the Week In Reverse, right here at Green Car
Reports.
]

The Nissan Leaf is by far the world's best-selling electric car, but one of
the ways Nissan has kept its cost down is by eliminating an active-cooling
system for its lithium-ion battery pack.

Now, however, its second mass-produced electric vehicle--the Nissan e-NV200
small commercial van--turns out to have a slightly different battery pack
design than the Leaf.

And it uses the vehicle's electric [air-conditioning] unit to route cool air
through the pack when the electric van's battery management system decides
it's warranted.

The cooling channels in the pack were first covered on Transport Evolved,
which noticed them at the European media preview of the e-NV200 held last
week.

According to the European press materials, the bespoke cooling pack is
intended for use during quick charging, which can create a great deal of
heat as the battery is recharged to 80 percent of its capacity within 30
minutes.

Nissan goes on to explain it expects the e-NV200 to be used in ways quite
different than the Leaf, including intensive operation during the business
day and much greater use of DC quick charging to minimize the time the van
is off the road.

Consequently, cooled air from the e-NV200's climate-control system is routed
through channels over the battery cells to ensure optimum charging
conditions at all times.

The same system also wafts warm air over the battery, again to keep the
pack at the best operating temperature for long life.

Those uses include all-electric taxis, which may be on the road up to 20
hours a day or more--and have to endure DC quick charging as much as three
or four times on some days.

The Nissan approach of using the vehicle's heating, ventilating, and air
conditioning (HVAC) system for active thermal management of battery
temperature is similar to that used by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and other makers
in certain hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

And it stands in contrast to the Leaf approach of using only passive
conditioning--essentially, the battery pack shedding heat by radiating it to
the atmosphere.

That has gotten Nissan in trouble with a small but vocal group of owners in
extremely hot climates, notably Phoenix, Arizona, where asphalt road
temperatures can reach 160 deg F (70 deg C) or more in the baking desert
summer sun.

Their Leafs have lost battery capacity more quickly than expected, leading
Nissan to promise a minor switch in lithium-ion cell chemistry to one that
tolerates high temperatures much better.

That revised battery chemistry is expected to roll out sometime this summer.

Could the thermally-managed pack from the e-NV200 indicate a potential
change in future Leaf battery design?

Brian Brockman of Nissan North America declined, as always, to comment on
future products.

But Nissan's product czar Andy Palmer has said in the past that the company
would consider active thermal conditioning using air, although he has
dismissed the liquid battery cooling and heating used by General Motors,
Tesla, and other makers.

So the electric van's thermally-conditioned pack could be viewed as a
test-bed for a next-generation Leaf battery--especially in the harsher and
more varied duty cycles of North America.

We already know the next Nissan Leaf will offer a variety of battery-pack
sizes. Perhaps the active

Engineers at Honda in Japan are testing an electric vehicle that can drive
itself into a home carport where its battery is recharged wirelessly.

Researchers say the system would be convenient for drivers who are not good
at parking and cite efficient recharging as another benefit.

The technology was demonstrated at a house just outside Tokyo on Monday.

A computer installed in the vehicle contains data on the location of the
house and garage.

The driver uses a smartphone to instruct the electric vehicle to drive
itself into the garage.

An array of cameras installed on the house and in the garage ensures the
moving vehicle avoids obstacles.

After the car parks in the garage, the driver uses a smartphone to begin
recharging the battery. The recharger is a non-contact wireless device, with
no plug-in required.

Engineers will continue testing to learn whether the technology functions
properly in storms, heavy snow and other challenging conditions.

Researchers say they hope to make the technology ready for practical use in
the near future.

[EVDL] I my ADC 9Armature Bad ?

Hello all,
I ran my brushes to long and messed up my brush holder ring and need to turn
my com. My question is I measured my Armature to Com. resistance before
cleaning and it read 5.7 K ohm's after rinsing and backing out for several
hours it read 17.5 K ohm's . Is it any good, or is it time for a new Armature ?

Thanks, Jeff

Re: [EVDL] I my ADC 9Armature Bad ?

2014-06-23 Thread Roland via EV
Hello Jeff,

A new armature reading from each communtator bars to the shaft should read over
20 megohms which means no communtators bars are shorted to
armature shaft. As time go on, it is normal for this ohm reading from any
communtator bar to armature shaft to read between 30 to 50 kohms which
is cause by brush dust tracking from the front of the communtator bars down to
the shaft.

You will note that the spacing between the front of the communtator bars are
only separated by a mica insulation that may be only 1/8 of a inch thick. This
is where the brush dust normally bridges this space.

It is best to take the armature to a motor shop which can checks any open or
short in any communtator segment with a growler test to determine
if there is grounded coil or a armature bar shorts.

If the armature shows good, it is best for them to re-vanish and bake the
armature and coat the front of the communtator down and on part of the shaft.
Then have the communtator turn to a micro mirror surface and under cut the
communtator slots.

If the armature needs rewinding, some local motor shops are not set up for dc
motors, they normally sent them out to a dc shop which may cost about the same
as a new one.
