RE: [expert] Upgrading to KDE on Mdk 7.2beta3
Yeap, I got all the rpms and installed it although I had to force some. Anyways, after installing all(BTW, I did them in XFce not in console mode), I restarted X. Then came up the same login manager(kdm) from beta3, and tried to log in, but it says log in FAILED. The same as 'root'. So I switched to console mode and logged in and 'startx'ed, which was successful. The installation must have screwed up something in log-in part(I don't even know exactly what got screwed up). So, can anyone can help me out here? You can get pretty much whatever rpms you want/need from the ftp site for rpmfind rather than the website. I managed to get kde-2.0 installed properly on my 7.1 system with the following rpms: mandrake_desk-7.2-18mdk rpm-3.0.5-27mdk menu-2.1.5-42mdk libstdc++-2.95.2-7mdk At least, the rpms all installed without any core dumps from /usr/bin/update-menus. I don't know how kde actually runs yet because I had to do all this remotely via ssh. I'll have to wait until I get home after work to restart X to see if the install is good and working properly. praedor Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. [expert] Adding GNOME to gdm in MDK7.2beta2
OK, this is a first for me. I installed 7.2 beta2 and it would go into KDE(1.93) automatically without going thru a login manager. However when I log out, it would drop out to what seems like kdm(kde login manager?). From there, I could choose whichever installed desktop environment and go in with the selected environment. Anyways, I upgrade KDE to the lastest(1.94) and then I went into Gnome(1.2) and installed the lastest version of Helix Gnome. During the installation, it asked to change to gdm(Gnome login manager?). so I did and restart. Here lies the problem, in the new gnome login manager titled 'Helix Gnome', under 'session', Gnome is NOT listed? huh? so my questions: 1. How do I add 'Gnome' to the current(gdm) login manager and where is it? 2. why does it go right into KDE without logging in and how do I fix it? _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. [expert] Help me: I am Locked OUT!
Something really weird is going on. This is sort of a continuing message from my last post about JBuilder. So I installed JBuilder last night, then turn my computer off. This morning I turned it on and somehow my run level was set to 3. Weird, I thought, anyways I logged in and startx'ed but it wouldn't go into X. It said something about 'i don't have authority on Xauthority' and it's failed to connect to X server. So I changed the runlevel to 5 and reboot. Now it boot to X and I have the Helix Gnome login, but can't log in. after user id and password with Enter, the screen will go blank and shoot right back to the login screen. So I log in as root which is fine. What's going on? Did I get some kinda hack-attack? although my machine is behind the firewall(rh 6.1 ^^), can this be possible? Or was it something JBuilder install script's doing? I am completely lost. I need help. I would really appreciate some of yours expertise. [expert] 7.1 Beta-3 VS. The official 7.1
I've been happly using 7.1 beta-3 for a couple of weeks while waithing for the official release of 7.1. So as soon as it was made avail, I downloard it and installed. And to my surprise, it actually seemed not as good as beta-3. There were seg-fault upon closing the control centre in GNOME, and the system in general seems to be actually slow. Don't know why, but even with enough RAM, I would be actually using the swap with settings of the system being identical as the beta-3. Is there anyone who tried both and find the similar result as I did? For now, I am gonna use beta-3 instead until I found out more about it. I'd appreciate your inputs.
