Sounds like maybe the wrong device driver is configured in K3B.  Also, you can 
turn off the overburn parameter in K3B.

I burn bin/cue files produced with vcdimager, like you I have found that I 
need to specify the driver or the cdrdao command fails, though not with 
the same error message as you. Maybe it is the absence of the driver flag 
which causes the problem

starting to play with the parameters of cdrdao, and - lo and behold - the 
following simplified version of the command line worked! :

$ /usr/bin/cdrdao write --device 0,0,0 --driver generic-mmc --speed 24 --eject 
/home/scm/downloads/.bin

Left to figure out: how do I make k3b to produce the above? ... though it 
sounds really stupid to even attempt that (i.e. emulating the GUI to produce 
a one-liner)...
