[FairfieldLife] Re: States of Consciousness vs Spacial Dimensions
Yes the philosophical and the mathematics are interesting to follow though the spiritual experience of it is more compelling. ---In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com,wrote : The higher states of consciousness are not equivalent to the higher spacial dimensions in physics. For example, the waking state or sentience is not equivalent to the fifth spacial dimension. However, some philosophers, like David Chalmers, believe that sentience is an emergent phenomenon of matter. On the other hand, there are philosophers who believe that sentience or consciousness was always present in the beginning of the universe. IOW, consciousness may have been present in the creation of matter. So, the human being is the product of the evolution of the mind and matter. This is the reason why MMY stated in his writings that most humans are asleep and need to awaken to the possibilities of the higher levels of consciousness. As such, the higher spacial dimensions in physics may not lead to any magical properties like worm holes, or they may not exist at all in nature. Presently, scientists at the LHC in Switzerland have not found their existence. But some scientists believe that these higher spacial dimensions are necessary to understand quantum theories, like the Superstring. So, these dimensions can be a purely mathematical idea, like a negative infinity or the positive infinity. But they don't lead to enlightenment

Can't find where he mentions shamatha by name. He mentions someone else's proposed categorization of meditation into 2 main groups and proposes that TM belongs in a 3rd category... In the neurological division of different types of meditation there are two: FA and OM IIRC. FA is shamatha, i.e. TM, shamatha, etc. The TM researchers, without providing parallel research, tried to invent a faux category I believe they called automatic transcending or some similar diversion. Due to the lack of similar, parallel evidence, I don't believe anyone but the radical TMers believed it. It's just part of their underlying belief that they must maintain some sort of unique brand-name recognition.

You've seen their evidence for why they propose this 3rd category of meditation and you can't even recall what they call the category? H Lawson

Vaj: Not a very honest presentation... According to Wallace, Samatha is calm abiding, a type of meditation designed to enhance sustained voluntary attention; a subset of the broader family of samadhi or meditation practices. Reginald Ray at the Shambhala Mountain Cente says Samatha is single-pointed focus of mind; a limb of Raja Yoga. So, it's just like TM in a way: meditation on objects. The unification leads to a very clear and direct experience of the nature of all things. This brings one very close to what is called the absolute truth. - Dzogchen Pönlop Rinpoche Works cited: 'The Attention Revolution' Unlocking the Power of the Focused Mind by Alan Wallace Wisdom Publications, 2006 page 6 and 131 'In the Presence of Masters' Wisdom from 30 Contemporary Tibetan Buddhist Teachers By Reginald Ray Shambhala Publications, 2004 page 69 and 76
