Re: Tad's Sammy
Tad, I'm so sorry to hear about Sammy. I know you did the right thing though, being without a lower jaw wouldn't be any way to live. I'm sure Sammy is in a better place now. It's so shocking when they go so fast like that. One day here, and gone the next, and you're left in a whirlwind of shock and heartbreaking emotions. My condolences go out to you. RE: Help
Many times males cats have urinary/kidney problems. My non felv+ cat died from this. Please go to another vet. Weakness in hind legs is a very common sympton of a few diseases. Kidney is a major one. Is your cat a diabetic? Has it been tested foe diabetes? Neuropathy causes hind leg problems. From: "JENNIFER RATLIFF" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org To: Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Help Date: Thu, 02 Jun 2005 17:56:54 -0400 --- Begin Message --- I need help with my 3 year old FELV+ baby Sebastian. Sebastian, I believe, was born positive. His life has been wonderful until recently. He has lost weight, hair, and has weakness in his hind legs. His eating habits are good. I just don't know what to do. I have taken him to three different vets and no one is doing what I want. I want to know why all of these things are happening and I want to fix them. I have to do everything that I can to help him. I will be devastated when something happens to him. For about two years he was getting steroid shots monthly. This was recently stopped and now he is on Interferon. I need to know if anyone knows of any feline leukemia specialists, any great websites. I will take him to whatever vet that I need to. I just need advice as to what to do next. --- End Message ---

That's great news about Bones, I hope the month flies by and she heals well without the surgery. -- Belinda Happiness is being owned by cats ... Update on Bones (good news!)
Bones and I are back from the specialist today. Bones has a "Caudal end plate fracture of L3 Vertebrae", and possible pelvic fractures also, but the pelvic fractures did not show on x-ray (but the vet says she is unusually tender in the hips, and feels "off" on palpation). She said that Bones is really doing so much better than can really be expected from this injury (she's like, best case scenario at this point), and that she doesn't see any need to go into surgery right now, and so Bones is now on anti-inflammatory drugs and complete bed rest for a month. If she gets worse, then we could still end up in surgery, but this is something that could heal on it's own. So, YEAH, good news! The vet really seemed to like her, She wanted to see Bones walk, and so I called her out of the kennel, and Bones swayed her way over to the doctor, and then she made a nice big circle around the room, as if she knew exactly what the doctor wanted. The doctor said "Oh what a good little kitty, you made such a nice circle for us, what a good girl!". Hehe, she really is a cute little cat, you can't help but be taken in by her winning little personality! Now, how to keep her from pacing the cage and trying to chew her way to freedom will be the problem. She's already going NUTS in the bathroom, and I've been told that that is too much space, and she needs to be in a 2x3 foot cage at max (just enough room for her to stretch out comfortably and fit a litterpan and food bowls), so she cannot walk around, and is basically forced to lay, sit or stand still for a month. I have to buy a cage, but don't have the money til next payday, so she has a few more days of pacing the bathroom until she's a real prisoner. The poor cat does not understand that we are trying to SAVE her, she thinks we are intentionally locking her in alone and ignoring her. I already feel guilty, and it hasn't even really begun yet. Hopefully, if I get one of the open wire type of dog cages, where she can see out all sides, it will help to calm her down and make her feel less confined than being closed behind a solid door. I gotta get pictures for you guys so you can see her. Oh, and she weighs 5.7 pounds.. told you she was TINY! (at least compared to my 12 to 14 pound fat-so's) Ok, off to change litterboxes, shower, tend to Bones, make dinner, and then get a few hours sleep. Man, getting up at 5:00am, driving 150 miles with a meowing cat, then going to work all day and not getting home til after 10:00pm... I'm kinda exhausted! :) Jennhttp://ucat.ushttp://ucat.us/domesticcatlinks.html ~~~I collect KMR kitten formula labels for Bazil, a 3 yr old special needs cat who must live on a liquid diet for the rest of his life.Bazil's caretaker collects labels and sends them to KMR, where they add up until she earns a free can of formula!PLEASE save your KMR kitten formula labels for Bazil! Re: Help
I had Bailey and Joey tested with this special test, the lab charges $120.00 per cat and my vet added $60.00 per cat, so I paid $180.00 per test, I was a bit shocked but we did find out that both of them are very low on cortisiod, and some other things. That's one of the reasons I switching to homemade food and they are both on low doses of pred to try and get their cortisiod up to normal levels, I need to retest just haven't been able to yet. I think a restest is $70.00 or 80.00 per test. There are only 5 or 6 labs capable of doing the test, guess that's why it is so expensive. -- Belinda Happiness is being owned by cats ... What a great story...Sammy was a truly lucky cat! How wonderful of you to take in this senior who had obviously been loved before Sounds like he had two special caretakers Chris [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tad Burnett Sent: Thursday, June 02, 2005 2:22 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: Tad's Sammy Thank you all for the kind words about Sammy... Sammy did have a full life and an interesting story... He originally came to me as SD named after the Suffuc Downs horse race track near Boston MA. where he came from...When feeding the ferals there there was one cat that came up to be patted and picked up...They decided to rescue him and when they brought a carrier for him he walked in himself... They brought him to the vet for a check up..FeLV+... But he was such a good boy they decided to try one time on the internet...I had spent some time in that area years ago so I wrote back and said I would take him... His teeth were all rotten and he had to be neutered before I could bring him home but from the very 1st moment that I saw him he was my cat..He joined the others in my FeLV room with no problem at all and he always slept by my head at night... He liked to sit in the window and watch outside... He would have liked to go outside againBut one day soon after I got him it was snowing and he jumped in the window and took one look and jumped back down...He knew what snow was and didn't want to be outside that day A while later I got a call from the rescue person that I had gotten him from and they found a worker at the track that had asked about him...It seems there was an old woman that had lived in one of the horse barns and his name was Sammy and he had lived with the old woman but she had cancer and had passed away... The man was happy that Sammy had a good home because he knew him from before. Sammy was old and I feed him special food which he ate well but never put on much weight and he had arthritis but he never showed any sign of anything unusual until Saturday night when he didn't finish his food the way he usually did and was shacking his head... I thought it might be one of his remaining teeth... Then on Sunday he just looked at his food but wouldn't eat...An hour later I found him with blood coming out of his mouthThe vet said to watch him and put me on for early appointment for Monday morning.Monday morning he couldn't close his mouth with a huge swelling under his tongue... The vet said it was most likely a cancer tumor with a burst blood vessel and the whole lower jaw was involved... He would have had to remove the lower jaw to get rid of it and because of his age he probably wouldn't have made itHe was in pain and the only humain thing to do was to help him on to the Rainbow Bridge It all happened so quickly that I was just studded by it all and I miss my old friend but perhaps I will get to see him again If you would add his name to the CLS list that would be nice.. Help
I need help with my 3 year old FELV+ baby Sebastian.

Tad, I am so very sorry about Sammy – it is just so sad that it came so quickly, but at the same time, I feel relieved in a sense that he did not have to suffer for a long time – and you two have a quality of life together until the very very end – and both of you were and still are lucky to have each other. RE: Tad's Sammy
That's a moving and wonderful story, Tad--it brought tears to my eyes. Sammy must be the first cat that ever walked into a carrier--he knew he was on his way home. Thanks for sharing the dear little furball's story. Once again, I'm so glad he found you. Even though you only had 18 months together, he had the security of knowing he was in a safe and loving home for the rest of his life. Aw, Tad, you've got me bawling like a baby. It sounds like Sammy touched everyone he came in contact with. What an amazing story. I'm so glad he found his way to you. God bless you Tad and God bless Sammy in his journey. I'm betting he'll stay by your side to help you with the rescues you have and the rescues still to come. RE: RE: average lifespan
I am so happy to hear that they are both doing good! We just have to take one day at a time – right? That’s what I do with my ginger, and all of my other cats for that matter – every day, I come home and see them, all my troubles seem to be so minimal compared to their well-being.. From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Chris Sent: Wednesday, June 01, 2005 10:52 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: RE: RE: average lifespan Well, Tucson hovers between 16-17 lbs and I recently had to put her on a diet as her weight affected her breathing… When she slows down on eating or is in a grumpy mood, I know something is up—that’s how I found out she was FELV+. I’ve had her since she was a kitten, (had fallen into a wall in my parent’s apt) & she’s never been exposed to FELV as she was indoors only so vets I saw were sure she’s had it since birth. Only problems I’ve had were two episodes of very low white blood count which vet treated with immuno-regulin. Big Boy is a stray I fed for a couple of years before bringing him in—I saw him every day all that time & he was never sick. I was floored when he tested pos. Its hard to tell how old he is but vet says somewhere between 4-6. He has been asymptomatic but vet trips are a real ordeal for him so outside of regular blood tests, I try not to take him in too often. My other 3 (1 older, 2 younger than Tucson), were around her and not vaccinated for FELV—They now get tested/vaccinated once a year (we’re due this month). Anyway, so far so good, (knock on wood)—though I know that things can change in a heartbeat… Chris [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Hideyo Yamamoto Sent: Wednesday, June 01, 2005 5:33 PM To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: [Norton AntiSpam] RE: average lifespan How are they both doing? Is Salome just a carrier or is it in the bone marrow? To be 9 years old, she must be a carrier??
