I use Fotostation Pro V4.5 if you have 1`s of images then you can add index manager to it, Fotostation Pro is around 500 UK Pounds, its baby sister FotoStation 4.5 is also available, See www.fotostation.com www.fotoware.com Both are superb programs for storage and offer a whole host of functions. -- James Grove [EMAIL PROTECTED] www.planet-images.com - Original Message - From: "Alex Zabrovsky" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, July 10, 2002 11:12 AM Subject: [filmscanners] Image archiving and managing software Hi all. After I finally established by image processing and archiving PC system, it's time to get some nice and useful image archiving and managing software to keep track of my image database and easily manageable archive. I would be grateful to anyone advising on this point. My system consist of: PC running Win2000 Pro. Scanners: Nikon LS40. Image scanning software - NikonScan ver 3.1.2 used as TWAIN through PS7. Image editing software - PS7. The strategy I was considering as follows: 1. All archiving-worth images are stored in JPEG format (after PS tweaking is necessary and resizing). The file size - up to 200k per image. 2. High-quality images from above, potentially intended for future printing and enlargement - scanned at 12 bit/pixel resolution (up to ~60 MB file) tweaked in PS (if necessary) while keeping track of PS editing done to this particular image (for reversibility if if possible). Images are stored as either TIFF 16 bit or PSD files. The achieve will be stored on local HDDs, back up on remote (USB2.0 accessible) HDD and CDs. Your comments are welcome. How did you go about it? So far I've successfully avoided reinstalling Win2K. I just don't have the time to reinstall all my apps, re-do the performance tweaks and whatnot. I've done a lot of performance hacks in the registry and don't want to repeat all those either. You can often refresh a Win2K installation by: 1) reinstalling major device drivers; 2) reinstalling the latest version of IE plus any associated Service Packs; and 3) refreshing system files by running the command "SFC /Scannow" from a Command Prompt window. Those were the only steps that I took to correct problems in my Win2K installation. So far, it's been running since March 2000 without needing to be reinstalled. The newest version of NikonScan no longer requires you to uninstall the earlier version. Just extract the files, run Setup and you're done. RE: filmscanners: Nikon Scan V3.1.2 For Windows and MAC
I`ll clear up the situation for Nikon Scan V3.1.2 before I get accused of distrubuting virus`s. OK 2 weeks ago V3.1.2 of Nikon Scan and the new Xp Driver set were posted on the Japanese Web Site. Nikon Euro are usually the first to do the conversion. However around three days ago I noticed that the US Digital site had the files on them. I left it, yesterday I grabbed them, I posted them on my site and on my ftp server for everyone to get because: Nikon only have one site in the world with the english files on, If you don't have DSL or ADSL or Leased Line it will take you forever to get the files Nikon limit the output in K/Sec from th site. I am fed up with the lack of CS from Nikon with reference to Digital products. Nikon Scan V3.1.2 is working much better for me under XP, however if I prescan the LS-40 still does 2 passes? However, I note that it has rubber feet on the 'side', implying that it can also be used 'flat' (with the film strip going in 'on-edge', so-to-speak. The latter would suit my desk layout better, but will it affect the scanner's performance in any way? Is there an optimal position, or will it make no difference? Thanks Mark

A while (!) later, I have it installed and running, on XP, with the 1.10 firmware update installed on the scanner too. First thing to note is that the annoying message has gone - the one telling me that the last 2 frames out of 6 on my (4 frame) negative strip is missing. So I'm happy already. As for performance/quality, difficult to tell yet Mark

I've a feeling it might be a bit of overkill, but Anyway, US$800 or so seems to be quite a good price when I consider the US/GBP exchange rate at the moment - it works out to about 575GBP, which is slightly more than I intended to spend but would get me a scanner I'd probably be able to live with for a long time. So, a couple of questions: 1. What are the batch scanning features like on the Nikon? 2. Can anyone recommend an online store from which I could buy the scanner in the US? 3. Any other ideas for scanners which might be slightly cheaper, before I commit myself? Thanks Mark

I had also found a way round the problem which was an inconvenience rather than a showstopper. 3-6 months later an update fixed the problem but they didn't e-mail me to tell me. If I had paid the normal asking price (it was bundled) and my livlihood depended on it I would have been bloody livid. Depressingly Lasersoft support is actually better than many others. Steve Your comment about workarounds gave me an idea. After the reinstall of Photoshop, if SilverFast causes Photoshop to freeze again with a 500 MB file from my SS120, I'll try to install SilverFast as TWAIN rather than a Photoshop plug-in. I remember having a similar problem where my Microtek ScanMaker 5 flatbed scanner with ScanWizard software would cause Photoshop to freeze about every third scan. ScanWizard could be used either as a Photoshop plug-in or as a stand alone program, so I run it by itself now. filmscanners: SilverFast vs Others
I have read a great deal about SilverFast, can someone tell me the advantages of SilverFast over say Nikon Scan 3.1 and VueScan? James Grove [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.jamesgrove.co.uk http://www.mountain-photos.co.uk ICQ 99737573

I've recently purchased a Nikon LS IV scanner. It was delivered with Nikonscan 3.0. While the scanner is ok, I don't like the software, since it crashes all the time and I have to restart my computer and I hate that. I heard the new version 3.1 is better. How can I get it? The salesman told me that new version could be downloaded from internet, but he couldn't give more details. If so, where and how could I get this program? My system is a Pentium III, 1 GHz, 512 Mb SDRAM, Matrox G450 32 Mb. Thanks a lot in advance, Claudiu
RE: filmscanners: Frustrating NikonScan 3.1 Problem
I had exactly the same problem, the only way to fix it was to re-format and re-install, not to much tourble for me thank goodness! I didn`t think it had happened to any one else. I put it down to a program I installed after Nikon Scan V3.1 that messed the TWAIN up? Please let me know how you get on. (Cary Enoch R...) Sent: 15 June 2001 14:03 To: Filmscanners Subject: filmscanners: Frustrating NikonScan 3.1 Problem Has anyone had any problems with NikonScan 3.1 in Windows 2000? NikonScan 3.1 only worked correctly for me for the first two days. After that it always displayed the message "No active devices found." I looked in TWAIN.LOG to see if there were any debug messages (you can usually find this file in your TEMP folder) and read: TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk ::AppInitialize - Reset Log TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk ::OpenServer - Starting Thunker TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk ::CloseServer - Why Can't We Find The Thunker Window? Despite NikonScan's inability to find the "thunker" the scanner was listed in Device Manager as working properly and Vuescan operated it perfectly. Specifically this occurred with my Nikon LS-4000 in Windows 2000/SP1. I've temporarily solved the problem--though I don't know why this worked--by uninstalling NikonScan 3.1 and reinstalling version 3.0. So now all the instability and memory bugs are back but NikonScan recognizes the scanner again. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I wrote with specifics to Nikon technical support but if my past experience is any guide they won't respond and if they do their answer will be vague if not outright irrelevant. I used Sysinternal's Regmon and Filemon in addition to a Registry before and after tool to try and troubleshoot the problem but found nothing. Er it shouldn`t at least it doesn't on mine (V3.1) James Grove [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.jamesgrove.co.uk http://www.mountain-photos.co.uk ICQ 99737573 -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of AR Studio Sent: 09 June 2001 15:17 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: filmscanners: New Nikon and ICE feature Just discovered with Nikon IV that ICE (normal setting, at least) will act as ROC (color restoration) if you have an image that has a dominating color, let's say a green forest or a field of yellow flowers. It will try to equalize the image so there's more than just than green, but also magentas etc. Otherwise, on multi-color images, ICE works as it's supposed to. Andrew + Helen
