Maybe they've never even seen a Fjord before, let alone a gray one. Ruthie, nw mt, US

(They would probably label Fjord owners as dumb) As for intensifying color, a lot of folks are feeding Black Oil sunflower seeds. On the CD-L there is a discussion right now about the sunflower seeds preventing fading in the sun as well as intensifying black. Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, cloudy between rains: Highways closed between Anchorage and Fairbanks due to flooding and washouts! It's always seemed to me that other Fjords sometimes have their coloring intensify on pasture also. This was true of Arabs I know, their mottling became very clear in the summertime, though hair loss may have partly accounted for that. Here's an equine color site that is asking for photos of gray horses.. submission of a gray Fjord may give them pause for thought, hah! http://www.equinecolor.com/grey.html Ruthie, nw mt US

MAYBE the hair had been permanently stained, I don't know, but Catherine and Amy had her washed squeaky clean when she arrived and the rosy coloring hung with her for a goodly while. This message is from: "Gail Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Probably the soil in the haircoat???. That stuff is RED. when Lily Filly (formerly Belinda alias Blue) arrived here from California from Doon Grade, I thought, "a red dun! I thought she was a gray!?" Catherine said, "wait and see," and sure enough she is now a beautiful gray color with no red at all.. something about the soil down there I guess.

This message is from: "ruth bushnell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Odin is gray but, until recently, I would have said his hair coat was white. However, he has spent some time stalled in a barn at "cowboy boot camp" and I was astonished to discover that his coat can be an actual gray color. Sun does make a difference. Gail YES, and so does nutrition, minerals, etc. I saw this transformation with my own eyes.. when Lily Filly (formerly Belinda alias Blue) arrived here from California from Doon Grade, I thought, "a red dun! I always marvel at how the deer transform themselves from drab brown to a brilliant rosy/orange by eating green grass every June. =))) Ruthie, nw mt US, where it is too hot, too hot, too hot.

This message is from: "Gail Russell" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> In Phil Sponenberg's books, "Equine color Genetics", there is a photo of a "Silvery Grullo" in each edition: In the first edition the picture is of a Spanish mustang, in the 2nd edition it is, what do you know, a very light colored grey Fjord! Both are pretty much the same light color as Abby. Sponenberg lists the possible genetics as including the cremello gene. He also stresses that there are many various shades of the different dilute colors. Odin is gray but, until recently, I would have said his hair coat was white. However, he has spent some time stalled in a barn at "cowboy boot camp" and I was astonished to discover that his coat can be an actual gray color. Sun does make a difference. Gail
Re: white dun filly-
This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Is this STONE FOX FARM'S ABBY? And is she a very pale (white) grey? I have thought that A grey and White dun might produce a very pale grey, which could be mistaken for a white dun. I wonder how many "White duns" are really very pale greys? Jean in rainy (again) Fairbanks, Alaska, 64 degrees Our grey dun mare Abby has had a white dun filly. She was born two weeks ago. She seems to be very long legged and refined. She has a very elegant dished face. For those of you wondering about the grey dun carrying the white (Dan?) It seems to be the case here. Abby's dam was a white her sire a grey. Abby is a grey- (although registered as a white-)

This message is from: Jean Ernest <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> She is lovely! I looked at the pedigree and note that , yes, She is related to Line and Stella II, etc. on her dam's side: Kviten, her Grandsire , is a full brother to Line, with Ola Gik and Flikka as Great Grand parents. How Interesting! Jean in Fairbanks, Alaska, with clear skies this morning: 80 degrees predicted.
